How To Hang Your Hammock

Hammock Hanging Guidelines

Talk of hammocks brings to mind the image of a cloth bed hanging between tall palm trees in a tropical breeze. But there are in fact many ways to enjoy the comfort of a relaxing hammock bed - once you get it hung.

Wooden six inch by six inch posts can substitute for trees if your trees are too far apart or too close together

For hammocks with spreader bars, 4-5 feet off the ground is the average height for hanging the hammock. For hammocks without spreader bars, 6-8 feet off of the ground is the optimum height for hanging the hammocks.

The wooden posts need to be placed in the ground and surrounded by at least eight inches of concrete. The post should extend a minimum of 24 inches into the ground. Be sure that the bottom of the hole is wider than the top diameter to prevent frost heaving if you live in a colder climate.

Use one half inch diameter eye bolts as the primary

connector. Do not confuse these with eye screws. You drill a hole completely through the post five to six feet above the ground. Insert the eye bolt through the post so that you can attach a washer and a nut to secure the bolt to the post.

It's dangerous to use an eye screw. Eye screws can strip and can pull out of the wooden post with little or no notice. A hammock suddenly crashing to the ground with a person nestled inside can be a rude awakening, not to mention suffering possible injury.

If you want to avoid the hassle of trees, hardware, posts and concrete simply purchase a hammock stand. These are made from tubular steel and fit most common hammocks. You can set them up anywhere and move them about in your yard as the sun creates new areas of shade during the day.

More Ways To Hang Your Hammock

The back porch is a great place for a hammock. But most houses don't have trees conveniently placed to provide support. In this case, a hammock stand is the perfect partner. Be sure to get one sturdy enough to stand up to a force several hundred pounds more than your weight.

You generate more force when you sit up, push off or plop down than you do when just lying. Also, anyone sleeping in a hammock is a magnet for someone to sit or lie on top of them. That substantially increases the dead weight and adds even more to the accelerated weight.

If you have them, tall thick trees make for great traditional hammock supports. The hammock looks good that way, and you'll have the shade from the trees to supplement your enjoyment. But be sure to hang in a way that doesn't damage the tree and still supports the hammock.

An alternate way to using bolts is by wrapping the

rope or thick strapping around the tree instead. If you attach the hammock by wrapping, the rope used to wrap the tree should be thick enough not to scar the bark. A large enough ring in bark, made deep enough, will kill a tree. Once that happens, not only do you lose the shade from the leaves, but the wood will become brittle and lessen the support. Not to mention killing your nice looking lawn decoration. Even a small opening in the bark can provide easy access to tree-killing insects and parasites.

If the rope is thick enough to support the hammock, but thin enough to do damage, it's easy to solve the problem. Just wrap that portion of the rope with a towel or piece of thick rubber such as a few layers of sliced garden hose. Screwing a 1/4 inch diameter screw into a tree will usually cause no damage, provided the trunk is at least several inches thick and you don't penetrate more than a couple of inches.

For indoor hammocks, installation can be most anywhere. In tight spaces, like small spare bedrooms, college dorm rooms and others, a hammock might be just the thing. Hung from the walls, you can still have ample storage space underneath. You can hang it onto hooks, making it easy to remove during the day or when not in use. Be sure to search for studs to ensure a good hold, since obviously drywall won't support the weight.

Hammock Styles

STYLES

Current popular hammock styles include Spreader-bar, Mayan, Brazilian, Nicaraguan, and Travel / Camping Hammocks. Each styles is distinctive and has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Many hammocks come in a variety of colors, patterns, and sizes ranging from a one person (250 - 350 lbs) to two or three person (400 lbs - 600lbs). Common dimensions for hammocks fall in a range between 11' to 14' across and 6' to 11' wide.

The spreader bar hammock is easily recognized by wooden or metal bars at the head and foot of the hammock, spreading its width and allowing for easy access. This style is generally considered less stable and less comfortable for sleeping than other styles.

The Mayan, Brazilian, Nicaraguan, and Travel / Camping styles are similar in form, but differ by material and construction. The Mayan and Nicaraguan hammocks are made from either cotton or nylon string that are woven to form a supportive net. Mayan hammocks have a looser weave than Nicaraguan hammocks, and the supportiveness of the hammock "bed" depends on the number of strings and quality of the weave.

Brazilian hammocks are made from cotton fabric and usually more durable than the string varieties. While Mayan and Nicaraguan hammocks are considered by some to have the potential to be more comfortable, Brazilian hammock's comfort is less dependant on its construction and therefore less likely to vary as highly from manufacturer to manufacture.

Travel / Camping, or "Parachute" hammocks are popular among Leave No Trace and Ultra Light campers and hikers for their reduced impact on the environment and their lightness and lack of bulk compared to tents. They are made of sturdy nylon fabric and may sometimes include a mosquito net and storage pockets. Some types offer a ridgeline to make set up easier, and may also include a slit for entry through the bottom of the hammock. Special ropes or cords are used to loop around trees in order to create attach points for the hammock

Rope Hammocks: Cotton or Polyester

When people think about hammocks, they usually think about someone gently swaying on a tropical breeze on a rope hammock! In tropical weather, the place to be is in a rope hammock. That's why they are usually pictured that way! The tropical breezes can easily pass through the rope strands, keeping the user cool.

However, the downside is the criss-cross pattern that is left on your skin after prolonged use. Which is why some people prefer the fabric hammocks.

The comfort of a rope hammock is made up of several factors. Besides verifying that the hammock is hanging correctly, another factor is the weave pattern used and the size of the holes between the rope strands. The other factor is the material used: cotton or polyester. Cotton has the ability to stretch, allowing it to match the shape of your body. Being natural, it also feels better against your skin. On the other hand, polyester is much more durable. Being a synthetic material, it is less susceptible to mold and mildew, and will fade less if exposed to direct sunlight.

Poolside Hammocks

Seabreeze Poolside Quick Dry Hammock

Elegant design merges with generous comfort in the Seabreeze Poolside QuickDry Hammock. The acrylic weave not only helps the hammock dry quickly, but also makes laying in it a cool and comfy experience. The weave allows air to pass through the fabric, without trapping the heat. You won't have to worry about losing the brilliance of the blues or vividness of the whites because of the fabric's weather-resistant abilities. This basket weave like pattern consists of two shades of blue interwoven with white and thin black stripe. This is a classic pattern, sure to fit any other outdoor pieces. Hand-woven, white polyester rope attaches the hammock to the spreader bar and these rope attachments gradually get longer toward the center of the hammock. This creates a subtle pocket that makes this hammock extremely difficult to tilt.

Stands For Hammocks

Metal or Wood?

The main advantage of hammock stands is that you can put them anywhere. Not being attached to a particular tree or wall means that you can easily move to be in the sun or shade. There are other advantages as well, but they depend on what particular type of hammock stand you have, and there are several available.

Pawleys Island Steel Bronze Textured Hammock Stand

Metal is by far the most popular. It is relatively light weight, and easy to assemble. Most are made of steel, which can rust if left outside. To prevent this get one that has been painted with a protective coating. Any chips and scratches can easily be touched up using automotive paint. Better yet, choose stainless steel which doesn't rust. Stainless steel will cost a little more, but is extremely low maintenance making it an ideal choice for outside use.

Wooden stands are usually chosen because of the elegant designs available. You simply can't beat the look of natural wood, and the color goes with almost anything. You can even buy hand carved designs, personalized to your own requirements. Wood tends to be heavier than metal making them harder to move and assemble, but the extra weight will make your hammock more stable. Some woods like Cyprus have natural oils that protect them and keep them looking great. Others are varnished or pressure treated. Some sort of protection is vital, and this may mean you have two do some work to keep your stand in mint condition.
