What Are Hanging Mobiles?
Today, the modern hanging art mobile is embraced by those interested in mid-century modern art and design. Designers such as Ray and Charles Eames, Knoll, Herman Miller, created furniture that just begged for the compliment of a modern hanging mobile. Fans of Eichler style homes often display mobiles in many rooms of their homes including the living room, kitchen, bedroom, atriums, and even in bathrooms.
There is nothing quite like the beauty and style of a gracefully moving art mobile. Many people report a sense of peace and tranquility watching the gentle movements of a swaying mobile.
Mobiles fit into modern decor like almost nothing else. The Tally Ho hotel in Scottsdale features a giant mobile in its lobby. Calder's mobiles are displayed in museums around the world. Modern homes display a wonderous array of colorful art mobiles and the are right at home.
Mobiles can be made entirely of metal, shaped, welded, and painted. They are also made from metal wire and plastic or can be made from paper. I have created a new style of kinetic art mobile that uses no welding, and are truly unique. I also create what is called "stabiles" which are tabletop mobile sculptures great to cheer up your desktop, countertop, shelf, or coffee table (look great on a Noguchi coffee table!).

Mid Century Modern
what is MCM?
What is mid-century modern and how does it relate to modern art mobiles? The two simply go hand in hand. There is something purely modern and clean in the beautiful lines of a hanging mobile. It moves with the slightest breeze and gently sways and changes shape. This is called kinetic art because of the movement.Mid-century refers to a period in the United States between roughly the 1950's to 1970's when the "atomic space age" look was all the rage. You know, the Jetsons look, the 1960's Star Trek look. Futurist. Modern. Visionary. Way out!
The word "mid century" can be run together as "midcentury" or as two separate words, or hyphenated like "mid-century". Any way you spell it, it represents a very special design style that is characteristic in Eichler homes and the compact "atomic" ranch homes of the 1950s. Eichler homes were designed by Joseph Eichler between 1950 and 1974. He built over 11,000 homes in Northern California.
Mid Century modern style has become increasingly popular in recent years with magazines such as Atomic Ranch, Dwell, and Modernist devoting page space to the subject.
Also popular are ranch track homes, Streng homes, Lustron homes and any contemporary "post and beam" home. An art mobile completes the look in these wonderful modern homes.
In addition to modern art mobiles, another midcentury modern decor element is Blenko Art Glass. Today, collectors pay top dollar for the best retro looking handblown glass pieces by West Virginia company Blenko. Here's a picture from my home of some of my own Blenko glass collection and a Wayne Husted catalog giclee print:

A new different approach to Alexander Calder inspired hanging modern art mobiles. My name is Debra Ann and my modern art mobiles are made with polymer shapes and stainless steel, and my "furry" mobiles are made from soft natural nylon fiber that floats in the air in the slightest breeze. Each art mobile is handmade by me when you order it. Add a beautiful kinetic art mobile sculpture to any space in your home. A soft graceful addition to baby's room too. Custom colors, designs, and commissions are available.

About Debra Ann (me!)
who am I and why do I love modern art mobiles so much?

My name is Debra Ann and I make modern art in the form of hanging mobiles for sale at www.Hanging-Mobiles.com. I have been an artist since I was a teenager. I've always loved creating paintings, drawings, cartoons, sculptures, music, and writing. I remember my 5th grade teacher back in the Midwest, Mrs. Ward, was obsessed with hanging art mobiles and we were given a classroom project of creating one. She pondered over how to make the paddles (or petals) perfectly cut.
I've been online since 1995 selling my art and music through my own mailorder company. Art is not only extremely enjoyable for me - art is my world. I create everything you see here and on my website, including the photography and html web page code and I'm entirely self-taught.
In the spirit of Alexander Calder, I strive to make modern art mobiles that bring color, form, and graceful movement to your home, office, or nursery. I love the way mobiles look and move so gently. The look is decidedly modern. An art mobile adds the finishing touch to a beautiful modernist room and complement such furnishings as Eames, Knoll, and Herman Miller. Whether you own an Eichler or atomic ranch home, a contemporary home, or anything in between, a hanging mobile will add the modern accessory, the finishing touch, to a beautiful room.
About me: I am originally from Indiana, and moved to California in 1990 where I live for 8 years in beautiful San Francisco. I now live in Los Angeles and work from my lovely home studio. I also create abstract modern art and also love to collect Blenko art glass. Please contact me anytime with questions or comments.
