Illness spread by rodents

Hantavirus is a rare, but potentially fatal, pathogen carried by rodents. The virus family includes some North American strains that can cause respiratory and renal disease - more than half of all infections are fatal, and treatment is not available for infection of the lungs. The North American virus is carried by mice, and humans are exposed when infected mice leave droppings or urine. As they dry they get carried in the air as small particles (aka aerosolized) and breathed in. Most infections occur in rural areas where mice are more common.

Here's information on the various strains and available prevention methods.

Types of Hantavirus

Hantaviruses are members of the family Bunyaviridae. The various types and strains are distributed across the globe and carried by various rodents.
  • Hantaan - eastern Asia, carried by the striped field mouse
  • Puumala - Scandinavia and western Europe and Russia, carried by the bank vole
  • Dobrava - Balkans, carried by the yellow-necked field mouse
  • Seoul - worldwide, carried by the brown (or Norway) rat
  • Saaremaa - Scandinavia and central Europe, carried by the striped field mouse
  • Sin Nombre - Americas (specifically U.S. and Canada), carried by the deer mouse
  • New York - northeastern U.S., carried by the white footed mouse
  • Black Creek - southeastern U.S., carried by the cotton rat and rice rat

The virus can cause two types of disease:

1. Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, which affects the respiratory system. This is the most common form in the United States, with the deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) being the most common reservoir of the disease (strains Sin Nombre, New York, and Black Creek).

2. Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, which affects the kidneys. It is most common in parts outside of the Americas (strains Seoul, Puumala, Hantaan, Dobrava, and Saaremaa).
