The best Hanukkah songbook!
for a unique gift...

I was music director for the "Cantor Corps" at Temple Judea Reform in Durham and directed the Triangle Jewish Chorale for fourteen years. Before that, I directed a group called the Solstice Assembly which put on many winter shows incorporating music from Jewish traditions. We made three recordings and each included Hannukah music.

For fourteen years thereafter, the Triangle Jewish Chorale gave a Khanukah concert. So I have quite a good collection of chanukah music arranged in two- to four-part harmony, with guitar (piano) chords where appropriate.

I thought this year, my first after "retiring" from the chorale, I had time to put the songs in a book and here it is!

The reason I say it's the best is: it has more songs than any Chanukah songbook I've seen so far; the pages are big and the scores are beautiful; and the cover is pretty. If you know a better one please leave me its name in the guestbook...

Did you know there are THIRTEEN WAYS people commonly spell "Hanukah" in English? Aargh! See my lens How do you spell Chanukah?

Cuando el rey Nimrod

A song in Ladino often sung at Chanukah

Too bad Amazon misspelled the title!

When King Nimrod went out into the fields, he saw a star shining over the Jewish quarter, a sign that Abraham our father was to be born. Yes, the timeline is a little confused but it's a gorgeous song from the Sephardic tradition (again, we barely get to the harmony on this excerpt).

This is what the music looks like:

A piece of "Imi Nahtna Leviva-li," a song about latkes!

This song can be heard on the Solstice Assembly cd: Under the Drawbridge cd at Skylark Productions or you can buy the song (or the whole album) as download mp3s: Under the Drawbridge - Amazon download.

Shnirele Perele: the Solstice Assembly at Amazon

An ecstatic song about the coming of Messiah.

A string of pearls, a golden fan: Meshiakh sits making a blessing over the whole world. I learned this at klezkamp.

Sadly, this little excerpt never gets past the unison section. The song gets very exciting later on!

What is that strange picture?

"Fragment of pavement from Beth Alpha Synagogue, 500 C.E."

I found this very peculiar picture of menorah, bears (?), fruit?, birds, and a house(?) at a uga.edu website captioned: This is an image from a Beth Alpha synagogue pavement mosaic which dates from after 500 C.E. From BAR International Series 499, 1989, Unidentical Symmetrical Composition in Synagogal Art, by Rachel Hachlili, pp. 65, Plate XXXIII.

I fiddled with it a bit and painted my own version. I find its eccentricity satisfying.

We always loved singing "The Tree of Life" at synagogue when the kids were young. I was humming it to myself yesterday and decided to paint one.
