The National Galleries of Scotland

The National Galleries of Scotland look after one of the world's finest collections of Western art, housed in galleries on three sites across Edinburgh. The collections range from the Middle Ages to the present day and in particular, the National Collection of Scottish art.

Note that the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, home to the collection of Scottish portraits and the National Photography Collection, is currently closed for refurbishment and is expected to re-open November 2011.
National Gallery Complex
National Gallery houses the Scottish national collection of fine art from the early Renaissance to the end of the nineteenth century. Paintings by Raphael, Titian, El Greco, Velázquez, Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Gogh, Monet, Cézanne, Degas and Gauguin, are all counted in the collection, which includes a comprehensive collection of Scottish painting.

The National Gallery of Scotland is located on The Mound, Princes Street.


Open daily 10am-5pm. Thursdays until 7pm. Note that the gallery is open open on 1 January from 12 noon-5pm.
Closed 25 and 26 December.

Modern Art Galleries

The Modern Art Galleries include the Gallery of Modern Art and the nearby Dean Gallery. They house Scotland's collection of modern and contemporary art.


The Modern Art Galleries are located at 75 Belford Road, Edinburgh, EH4 3DR, a short walk from the West End of Princes Street.


Open daily 10am-5pm. Thursdays until 7pm. Note that the gallery is open open on 1 January from 12 noon-5pm.
Closed 25 and 26 December.

The Edinburgh International Festival is one of the best known festivals of the performing arts. in the world. It involves Edinburgh's six major theatres and concert halls, several smaller venues and even includes a number of, shall we say, unusual locations, during three jam-packed weeks in the summer.

Edinburgh Homanay festival (or when not slurring the words, Hogmanay festival), Thursday 30 December 2010 - Sunday 2 January 2011 did not disappoint.

Details and tickets for Edinburgh's Hogmanay 2012 will soon be available from the official Edinburgh Hogmanay web site.

The Torchlight Procession kicked off this year's Hogmanay on 30th December and began a host of celebratory events, featuring the very best in music and art throughout the festival with appearances from celebrities which included Biffy Clyro, KT Tunstall, The Coral, Newton Faulkner, Dougie Maclean, Booka Shade, The Charlatans, Treacherous Orchestra, Ian Rankin, Tommy Reilly, Billy Bragg and Roody Woomble.
