Two thousand years ago, there was a small salmon-fishing village, that village grew into Glasgow, an international city with world renowned museums and art galleries, a fine concert hall, international conference centre, science centre,sports arena and shopping centres.  What's happening in Glasgow is part of the successful "What's Happening" series of lenses and aims to keep you up to date with what to see and do in the great Scottish city of Glasgow.

Glasgow Museums

The City of Glasgow owns one of the richest collections in Europe, displayed in a collective of 13 museums and art galleries spread across the city. Glasgow Museums offer something for everyone, all are free, most have café facilities, and they warmly welcome children.

The Burrell Collection
One of the greatest collections created by one person, it consists of important collections of medieval art, tapestries, alabasters, stained glass, an important collection of Islamic art and English oak furniture. The collection also includes many European paintings, including works by Degas and Cézanne, and modern sculpture including works by Epstein and Rodin.

Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum
Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum is considered to be Glaswegians' favourite building. The museum houses over 200,000 objects, including objects from overseas expeditions by such famous explorers as David Livingstone, Charles Darwin and Captain Cook.

The fine art collection includes masterpieces by Rembrandt and Titian, a world-class collection of Impressionist paintings and works such as Dali's iconic Christ of St John of the Cross.

Opening hours:
Monday to Thursday and Saturday, 10am to 5pm, Friday and Sunday, 11am to 5pm.
The Art Gallery and Museum are open on public holidays, with the exception of:
Christmas Day, Boxing Day and 1 and 2 January, when it is closed all day. On Hogmanay, 31 December, the it closes to the public at 12.30pm.

Glasgow's Concert Halls

Glasgow boasts three top quality music venues featuring live music, located right in the heart of the city, the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, City Halls and the Old Fruitmarket.
Glasgow Royal Concert Hall
The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall is the main venue for Celtic Connections, which is the world's largest winter music festival and it is also home for the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
City Halls
This is the home base for the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and also features regular performances by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
The Old Fruitmarket.
This is a pearl, it has been described as one of the world's great music venues and hosts, jazz concerts, rock, pop and world music events, besides club nights, ceilidhs, to theatre events, comedy, fashion shows and banquets.
