Surfing in Munich

In the summer months, people flood to the Englischer Garten, which is a large public park in the center of Munich, larger than Central Park in New York. It is an area that supports all manner of activities but few as bizarre as surfing on the River Isar or more specifically, a man made tributary called the Eisbach that forms a standing wave as it flows into the park by the Haus der Kunst (Art Gallery).

München in Party Mode

  • Mardi Gras

For many citizens of Munich, the Mardi Gras season begins on New Years Day and runs through to Fat Tuesday, February 16, 2010, during which time, hundreds of balls are held in Munich.

If your in town on the Sunday before Carnival, February 14, on Shrove Monday, February 15, or Shrove
Tuesday, February 16, 2010, don't miss "München Narrisch," which is a celebration of Mardi Gras with music, masks and dancing, that takes place in the city's pedestrian zone.

Another highlight of the Munich Mardi Gras is the dance of the "Women of the Market" at Viktualienmarkt, which takes place on Shrove Tuesday, February 16, 2010, at 11 a.m.
  • Strong Beer Season or Stark Bierzeit

No sooner is Mardis Gras over than the Strong Beer Season begins; it runs February 25 to March 27, 2010.
The people of Munich refer to it as the fifth season and raise a glass to the monks, who according to tradition, brewed an especially nourishing beer during the Lenten season in order to give strength to their bodies, weakened by fasting.

Christmas Market Munich - Christkindlmarkt

The magic spell of Christmas

A 100ft Christmas tree with 2,500 glittering candles dominates Marienplatz, the aroma of Gluehwein (hot spiced wine), gingerbread, roast chestnuts and almonds, fills the air, and the square is filled with stalls decorated with Christmas lights. Each offering every imaginable Christmas decoration and festive gift.

Christkindlmarkt is once more fading into distant memory. I reckon that this year it will begin again on November 23, 2012.

The market is associated with what is probably, Germany's largest manger market. Selling everything from lanterns for the manger and fodder for ox and donkeys, to the gifts of the three Magi; in fact all you could ever need to create an authentic nativity scene.

Santa Claus visits the Munich Christmas Market to make sure that all is going well and that everyone is enjoying the festive spirit, between 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. every afternoon There is live festive music from the balcony of the town hall, played by Bavarian small string groups, wind players and choirs, daily, 5:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. and on Christmas Eve, December 24: at noon.

The Hofbräuhaus
Home of the "Birdy Song" and the oldest brewing tradition in Munich, On September 27, 1589, Duke Wilhelm V founded the first Hofbräuhaus, a brewery on the site of the Munich royal residence of that time.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart spent a lot of time in the Hofbräuhaus in 1780. His opera "Idomeneo" was first performed in January 1781 at Munich's Cuvilliéstheater.
