Happiness Recipes and Quotes to Help Make Your Day

I love writing about happiness, both on my blog-- Abundance Blog at Marelisa Online --and here on Squidoo.

Psychologists are now writing studies and books on scientifically proven ways to boost happiness. In addition, several Buddhist monks have become well known through their teachings on achieving happiness through mindfulness. I have several lenses on happiness in which these topics--the psychology of happiness and the Buddhist approach to happiness--are discussed.

In this lens I wanted to do something simple: offer happiness recipes and quotes to help brighten your day (or someone else's).

Five Happiness Quotes

1. "Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful." - Albert Schweitzer

2. "The grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for." - Allan K. Chalmers

3. "The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature." - Anne Frank

4. "Happiness is excitement that has found a settling down place. But there is always a little corner that keeps flapping around." - E.L. Konigsburg

5. "The basic thing is that everyone wants happiness, no one wants suffering. And happiness mainly comes from our own attitude, rather than from external factors. If your own mental attitude is correct, even if you remain in a hostile atmosphere, you feel happy." - H.H. the Dalai Lama

Gretchen Rubin--a former lawyer and now writer, living in New York City, who is married and has two children--spent a year carrying out experiments in order to be happier. This included everything from making sure that she acknowledged all holidays by decorating her home accordingly, exercising, singing in the shower, going to be earlier, decluttering, and fighting fair with her husband.

Happiness Recipe

"I have a little recipe that isn't hard to make
But you must always start as soon as you awake.
Take a great big mixing bowl and fill it with a smile
Mix half a cup of sunshine with good deeds to last a while.
Add a pinch of work and play, a pinch of thoughtfulness and care
But don't bake it in the oven, just spread it around everywhere."

Great lens... we all need to have a better outlook on life, and to learn no matter what is happening in our lives, it's healthy and great to laugh a little (or a lot) every single day. It's the little things in life that make a HUGE difference.
