Let's say those are the givens in the equation and add some other factors like a good collar and ID tag with your name, address, and telephone number.
Who knows, maybe if doggy gets lost, it'll wind up back home instead of the pound or shelter.
Some locales require licensing and vaccinations. Having a non vaccinated dog increases its chances of contracting rabies or some other malady. Speaking of local laws, there is the leash law.
Generally, a leash law says if the dog is off your property it must be on a leash. Some laws say it can be under the owner's voice command. Check to see what is applicable in your area.
A fenced yard is also part of the safe shelter mentioned above. Not everyone has fenced yards but if you do, put the dog in the fenced area. This doesn't mean leave the dog there in any and all weather conditions.
Dogs get cold in the winter and hot in the summer just like humans. They can suffer from extreme weather conditions too.
Spaying or neutering actually is proven to be beneficial for your dog. A spayed or neutered dog tends to live longer, be healthier, and have fewer behavior problems (e.g., biting, running away).
Another side benefit spaying or neutering produces is the problem of pet overpopulation. Shelters and pounds are already jammed packed with dogs tossed out by their owners. Why add to the problem?
Another idea to help control your companion's behavior safely and humanely is to enroll your dog in a training class.
Something inexperienced dog owners tend not to consider is the expectations they have of their dog. Just as with your children, you must be reasonable. Almost every problem can be solved by you using your head and thinking before acting.
Patience is a virtue. If you are a dog owner, you have the opportunity to become virtuous from day one. The dog is the new guy on the block and has to learn the rules. Teaching and enforcing the rules are your responsibility so learn how to set and enforce them.
It takes time to get to know each other. But once you do, it is true joy.
