Definitions: What is a GPS?

Generally it's functionality that can be in several different form factors: handheld, in cell phones, in autos, attached to laptops, in boats, airplanes and likely more soon!

The Global Positioning System, usually called GPS, is the only fully-functional satellite navigation system.

Satellite navigation systems allow small electronic devices to determine their location (Longitude, Latitude, and Altitude) in within a few metres using time signals transmitted along a line of sight by radio from satellites.
What is Longitude?
Longitude describes the location of a place on Earth east or west of a north-south line called the Prime Meridian.
What is Latitude?
Latitude gives the location of a place on Earth north or south of the Equator.
Definition of Altitude?
Altitude is the elevation of an object from a known level or datum.
How GPS works!
Our ancestors had to go to pretty extreme measures to keep from getting lost. They erected monumental landmarks, laboriously drafted detailed maps and learned to read the stars in the night sky.

Things are much, much easier today. For less than $100, you can get a pocket-sized gadget that will tell you exactly where you are on Earth at any moment. As long as you have a GPS receiver and a clear view of the sky, you'll never be lost again.

Ford and Garmin Partner on MSN Direct GPS Units
"We are delighted to help Ford offer its customers the most advanced personal navigation devices available," said Dan Bartel, Garmin's vice president of worldwide sales. "Selling GPS navigation at the dealer level gives Ford the ability to offer its customers one of the hottest emerging technologies today -- and it's available to customers when they're already in a buying mood."

The Ford-branded nuvi also features a custom splash screen and database of Ford and Lincoln Mercury dealerships and Quick Lane service centers across the US. The units will be sold in a special Ford Official Licensed Product branded retail box. The portable unit easily mounts to any vehicle, and can be used for pedestrian navigation as well.

The Ford-branded nuvi 680 will be available at the end of March. Ford dealerships will display interactive point-of-purchase displays and collateral materials that highlight nuvi's many features.
