I would love any advice on how to deal with bullies towards my grandson's hearing aids.
  • luvmyludwig Jun 21, 2011 @ 12:52 pm | delete
To tell you the truth bullies haven't been an issue at all for us. We always treated the hearing aids like earrings and kids always liked his because they were brightly colored. When he gets they I'd suggest picking up a book like the one linked to below and have his teacher read it to the class and answer any questions. We have found kids to be very understanding and receptive once they know what they are. Taking Hearing Impairment to School (Special Kids in School Series)
  • luvmyludwig Jun 21, 2011 @ 12:57 pm | delete
also, teach him how to answer questions about them. My son is now 11, but when he was little we taught him to say " some kids wear glasses because they don't see very good, and I wear hearing aids because I don't hear as good as you. But with my hearing aids I can." This always worked for him and bulling has never been a problem.

A couple years ago my son chose to grow his hair out to cover his hearing aids because a lot of adults ask him questions about them and he just got tired of talking about it. Good luck with your grandson, it will open up a whole new world and if you have any more questions you can ask them here or click on my profile and use the contact me button. I will answer any questions you have. I know how worrisome it is to know he will face challenges, but your grandson will be a stronger and better person in the end, even more compassionate toward others.

I'm so glad to find this information. My grandson lives with me. He is 6 years old, also. He gets fitted for hearing aids this week. He has struggled with the same issues as Kenneth. Please give me advice on how to explain this to Noah even when other kids make unkind comments.
  • luvmyludwig Jun 21, 2011 @ 1:10 pm | delete
I don't think there is a cookie cutter way to deal with it, but answering his questions honestly is the best way we've found. You could compare his hearing aids to glasses and explain why he needs them using that analogy since most kids know someone who wears glasses. If he does get picked on, explain to him that most kids just don't understand why he has them and once they do understand things will settle down. My son still goes to speech therapy and still gets frustrated when he has difficulty pronouncing things, but it gets better and easier. There will be tears, but the tears of joy far out number the bad tears.

Also, don't be afraid to advocate for your grandson. My son has an FM system at school, and it is such a big help with hearing his teacher in a crowded class. I would look into that also. The schools have to provide them, by law, free of charge.

Thank you for sharing! My son is 4 and will be receiving his hearing aids this Friday. Everyone in his life is so excited for his "rebirth" into the world! Glad to hear Kenneth's progress continues to grow by leaps and bounds!

Please let me know how it went. My grandson who is 6 will get fitted this week. Our concern is how other children treat him.
  • luvmyludwig Jun 21, 2011 @ 1:13 pm | delete
I'd love to hear how it went also. JAN, if you want to email me about this or with any questions then just use the contact button on my profile. I would be happy to help with anything I can or just lend an ear. We've been there done that, and I only wish I had known someone who had been through it when we were. Big hugs to you.

Thank you for sharing with us this great story. Hope Kenneth continues to do well. He's definitely a smart boy!

This is a great but sad story of a little boy's struggle to be normal in a world he could not hear properly. Have you heard of the Cochlear Ear Transplant. It works great and was invented in Austrralia by a remarkable man. Many children now hear perfectly without hearing aids. Great lens

What an amazing experience for Kenneth and your family. I too am hearing impaired and have worn a hearing aid since I was two (I am completely deaf in my left ear). Thanks for sharing.

What a sweet and inspiring lens. There was a time I feared my eldest would loose her hearing. Back and forth to a specialist because of all the severe ear infections and pain. She is on her second pair of tubes, her ears are very sensitive now but since her last hearing test her hearing is back to normal.

First of all I must tell you that I am a teacher of American Sign Language. I have met many children/women/men who have had hearing loss at a young age, been fitted with hearing aides and still couldn't hear very much. It is wonderful that your young one can hear well with them. I hope that this lasts for him. This is a beautiful, warm lens and I give you my 5*s.

What an amazing story. I don't quite have tears in my eyes, but there is a lump in my throat. Very inspiring!
  • sittonbull Feb 26, 2009 @ 10:19 pm | delete
It's wonderful that Kenneth is progressing so well and that you had the opportunity to make it happen for him. That is a wonderful story and you told it well. Spook is a favorite of mine also! I didn't lose my hearing until I was in my 40's, but it's getting progressively worse... even with hearing aids! I hope that Kenneth is able to continue to enjoy good hearing throughout his life! 5* and faved.

A wonderful personal lens. I can relate to some of this as my son was born with a heart disorder and we went through 4 months in hospital after he was born.

Your story touched me greatly. Angel Blessings to you for a great lens.

A kindred spirit! My son lost hearing in both his ears at the age of 2 from an antibiotic that was given him. We didn't figure it out until the age of 4. Diego had a lot of behavioral problems to overcome before giving him hearing aids (the equivalent of 2 laptops!) so he did 60 hours of the Tomatis Method to improve his listening. This opened him up emotionally as well as advanced his language. Finally at 5 he was ready for those hearing aids! Diego has had many other challenges to overcome since then including dyslexia, but now at age 16, he's a fun and loving young man. It's been a joy to be part of his journey. (And a lot of hard work!)
