Hardwood Floors

Hardwood Flooring - adds great value and beauty to any home, reception area or office. With proper care a real wood floor will last for years and pay for itself many times over.

The Beauty Of Hardwood Floors

There are homes that adopt a modern look and, therefore, use modern materials and designs. They may look a little futuristic and metallic, using only the finest concrete, steel, or fiber glass available. However, there are also those homes that stick to the conventional way of building; that is, by using wood. And for purists like these, hardwood floors are almost always a staple.

What is it about hardwood floors that never go out of style no matter how the times and interior design principles change? Hardwood floors offer a kind of natural sturdiness and reliability that cannot be found in most home building materials. Sure, concrete is great, but nothing beats a well finished hardwood floor to get that truly natural touch.

A hardwood floor is a great investment and one time expenditure

Hardwood floors are pretty expensive compared to most types of wood. However, they last a whole lot longer with proper care. The types of wood for such are oak and maple, but if you're under a budget, you might want to work with the latter, as oak woods are relatively expensive.

Having a hardwood floor in your home is an investment, but it is a one-time expenditure. This means you shell out a large amount only once because all you have to do is make sure the floor is clean and its finish its intact to for the next generations to benefit from it. Diligent waxing will do; so will constant cleaning.

But, perhaps, the best benefit you can obtain from hardwood floors is the natural look. You see, concrete gives off this cramped and stuffy atmosphere. But if you see wood in your home, you won't feel as trapped. Another is that no two hardwood floors are exactly alike. Because they come from a living thing, you are assured that each plank is unique.

You can't help but admire the history of each hardwood floor plank, and that's, perhaps, why it is comparatively pricey. If you want your home to have this rich old-house feel, use hard wood for your flooring. Surely, as human beings, we want some semblance of nature in our surroundings to keep us sane. Too much artificial building materials might seem ho-hum in the long run.

Should I Install Unfinished Hardwood Flooring?

or have a total job done by a professional?

Many people like to lay their own hardwood flooring and use unfinished hardwood flooring materials. This certainly boosts the ego when everyone admires the new hardwood floor and you can say you did it yourself. Equally you may have a professional hardwood floor installer complete a job for you. Purchasing unfinished materials potentially gives you a much wider control over the finished appearance.
There are obviously many solutions to laying your own unfinished hardwood floor starting from cutting the logs to laying almost finished prepared materials. You may need a range of tools if you elect to start with unprepared timbers. Unless you have a professional workshop I would suggest you almost certainly purchase timbers of the same thickness and probably width. Ideally you'll need a good circular saw and probably pneumatic hardwood flooring cleat nailer and stapler gun.
You may have chosen a light American oak hardwood floor or darker cherry or exotic hardwood flooring. Whatever your own personal choice you can adjust the final appearance according to the final hardwood floor finishing you choose to apply. For example you can choose to apply a wood stain to the sanded flooring. This could be a natural colouring - ranging from very light to a dark. In our more modern days some people have chosen to use a light pastel colouring - this maybe particularly appropriate in a kitchen or conservatory area where there are a range of bright colours.

Once you have the colour you require then complete the final phase of the hardwood floor finishing by applying a protective coating - usually varnish, polyurethane or epoxy based product to prevent scratches and damage from footwear etc.

Some of these decisions apply to laying a new hardwood floor or any hardwood floor repair. You may have some beautiful old timers in your property and have chosen a course of hardwood floor restoration requiring you to sand back the old timers and bring to an almost new status then finish the flooring as if it had been just laid. You may need to apply a few hardwood floor restoration techniques if there is damage to the floor before sanding takes place.

Whatever you choose - good luck because I am sure the effort will bring you enormous pleasure and feeling of satisfaction.
