HERE'S WHAT I THINK

HARLEY vs. HONDA -- Battle of the VROOMS!

The battle of the vroom-vrooms or motorcycle sounds has raged for years and years! But, having been a Harley-Davidson 'back-seat rider' for many years, there is no comparison to other imitator motorcycles and their 'sounds.' Didn't Harley actually PATENT their sound? Well, I've ridden on a few Sportsters and a Fat Boy, plus attended Daytona's bike week numerous times ... let me tell you, there ain't nuthing compared to a sound of a Harley!

Park the roadster ... it's Harley time!

Let's get it started ...

Keep it clean guys!

I love the Harley-Davidson logo!

Yes, you're right! HARLEY rules!!!

J_Williams says:

Only a Harley says "potato potato potato" and everything else sounds different. Both cylinders in a Harley engine can be fired by the same spark, which produces that unique sound. My Honda Transalp is a V-twin, but like some others of its kind (KTM, Ducati, Suzuki's TL1000, for instance) it turns WAY more RPM's than the H-D so the effect isn't as pronounced. No way my Transalp will ever be mistaken for a Harley wannabe, though!

dallyl says:

had harley and honda honda runs better, harley feels better

kab says:

I've got to go Harley. It just seems that the Honda riders are there for the speed and the Harley riders are there for the ride. Plus the sound of the Hondas just don't do it for me like the Harley does.

Lane says:

Nothing wrong with any bike you choose. It's like food or music, we all have own own preference. It took many bikes for me to settle on my preference. I've had 2 Honda's, 1 Yamaha, 2 Suzuki's and my last 2 were Harley's. I prefer Harley. I respect all bikers because I know what they're up against. I wish a law against using cell phones while driving would be nationwide. Also, maybe something like $500.00 fine when caught. Lastly, no matter what we ride, we're all in this together.

Ryan C says:

Harley all the way. All of you honda loving jackasses don't know what it means to actually love a bike. Everyone I know who bought a bike from honda or where ever just had the dealer do all of their work. You are a bunch of magazine flippers going oh i want that and oh yeah that one too. Screw that grab a wrench, get some grease and get your hands on an American Legend!

Roger says:

I've got an '05 Electraglide and a Honda VTX1300 in my garage. Honestly the Honda is twice the bike the Harley is in quality and performance for the money. After numerous problems with the fuel injection and primary sounding like a can of marbles, noisy oil pump, rattling tour pack, the HD is gone this spring. I'd rather have two Jap bikes than one American pile of crap. I hope HD in it's current financial crisis gets bought by a Japanese bike manufacturer, show them how to build a bike. Nostalga is memories of a good ride, not sitting on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck 'cause your twin cam decided to take a nap in the middle of a cross country vacation.

AndyPo says:

When in America I'd definitely choose a Harley, but in England a Norton or a Triumph perhaps?

TANGO9R says:

Last time i checked Harleys were the first on the road, Hondas just came along because they are bandwagons. By the way harleys can be comfortable its just your old ass who cant take the power of a real bike....

JD_Blackstar says:

Harleys are made, from design to construction, in America. That's a huge economic and cultural difference between them and a vehicle(e.g. Honda) put together , but not designed, in the US. I vote for a Harley. My second choice would be a Buell. Buell is another American motorcycle line renown for its handling.

ThomasC says:

I'm not a huge bike rider, but I'm going with Harley because they are an American Brand!

Big Dog says:

pyle mountain needs a better wife ! Twenty years to wait for a bike.. Dump her man !

Herb says:

I've owned a 85 Aspencade, which blew a crankshaft at 57k, wound up with a 07 Wing, now just sick of the cramped sport bike riding stance. Too many gadgets. Test drove a FLHTCU last week, fell in love with it in 20 min. and the wing is now for sale. You get no adventure points for riding a goldwing. Great for some, but not me anymore.

Pete says:

Hondas are crap.

pyle_mountain says:

Well, there are motorcycles and there are Harley's. My wife and I have agreed that when I'm 59 years old (I'm currently 39) - I'll be "allowed" to buy a Harley. Although I don't want to wish away the years - I'm looking forward to turning 59. :)

Dave says:

Harley Rules and Has for Over 100 Years !!! Gregory-and-Selina need to wake up unless they just can't afford a Harley !!
When it comes to Riding the roads , there is only ONE bike that gives you the feel and sound that Harley Davidson Will..... Greg you already lowered yourself... Have a safe ride !!!!

Lorie says:

Harley does rule- but I do like the feel of a dirt bike under me!
http://www.squidoo.com/girlbikers

Mobiiart says:

As I am over well past 40 now, sitting on a crotch rocket for more than 30 minutes just isn't comfortable anymore, so I now have a cruiser. Goldwings are a bit much in the fiberglass doodad department for me.If you want to go fast, grab a Honda, but if you want to rattle windows and make young ladies smile, get a hog.

harley boy says:

i love my harley and really only had one thing go wrong and that was the battery cable coming loose ,, changed the oil and changed the tire ,, has about 18,000 miles on it so far,,the reason i have loud exhaust is because it saved my life 5 times ,, people on cell phones go to pull out in front of me and i hit the throttle and get their atention and they stop ,, loud exhaust save lives,, believe me

AMK says:

Two fold answer: I love the Honda for looks, comfort and cruizing. There is nothing better. But I love the Honda for getting round on shorter distances. Not as comfortable, But nippy! Now I have neither. My freind lost his kneecap on a suzukki and I will die my wife says if I go near another bike :(

bigRUNT says:

Harley rules honda drools. I bought my HD for 2 reasons #1 AMERICAN MADE #2 I don't have to have a hearing aid to tell if it's running. And the bonus is 2 years later my bike retains 95% value Honda if your lucky 70%

No way, Monkeybrain! I'll take second best.

jesse says:

Check out the fury 2010

steven burgess says:

I started riding a suzuki boulevard in 2006. Then I had to have a Harley because it was the cool bike. I bought my Harley in February 2008 and loved it untill I rode it on a 300 mile road trip. I have never felt so much pain on a bike before. That is when I hated it and tried every dealer in the area for a trade in. The problem was that even the Harley dealerships would no give me even half of the money that I paid for the bike less than six months earlier. It got to the point where I just bought a Honda and sold the Harley privately because no dealer, Harley or not, would give me anything for the bike.

j9raven says:

Honda all the way. It's always interesting to see a Harley parked and have a look over it, but it's kinda like looking at an old Beetle with flowers all over- they are cool, but I rather be driving a new one. Much quieter, more efficient - the noise on the Harley is for everyone else to know you have one. A Honda sound is for you to know you have the best.
So really, if you want it for everyone to stare the Harley may be your thing. Boys stare anyway, so let them stare at me knowing I have a wicked bike than because of it. If no ones looking, then at least I know I have the better

lavenderwings says:

Had a Harley and hated it liked the Victory better then we got a vulcan2000 125 cubic inches!!! Now thats a bike!!!

Howard says:

"Honda's are crap"? Now why would anyone say that. We all ride, what's the diff, I love my bike (Honda Aero 750), it's just right for me. Hopefully you all have found the one that's right for you too.

Last year I rode up to High Point state park in NJ. Parked at the top viewpoint to check it out. There's a bunch of other bikes parked there, including a group of guys on Harleys. I'm getting off my bike, say hi, and one of them looks over and says "Hey, is that a girl's bike"? WTF is up with that.

Mellowd says:

Me personally I prefer a crotch rocket and last i checked Harley doesn't make one. I have a need for speed. I have many friends who ride Harleys and if you want to spend more time broken down than riding than I would recommend the Harley.

Gregory-and-Shelina says:

Anybody that rides a bike is cool except for those little mini bike choppers. Its all about feeling the breeze and eating bugs all day. It was funny to see Harley women in shorts freezing their asses off in Sturgis when it snowed during the summer. We do like the vrod since its a porche design so we might lower our standards and get a Harley someday so we can join the cult of fun riders. But we will definitely have to carry a big mechanics tool chest behind us. We will not break down and Gregory says he will not wear Harley underwear, or use a Harley toothbrush to get the bugs out of his teeth. But Shelina might. Harley marketing is the best. Ferocious Road Ripping Riding to All!

Michaud68 says:

Harley might as well be called Honda with all those Japanese parts on it American made what a joke! Save your money and buy the Honda
you'll bet more horsepower and bike for the buck chrome don't get you home.

EelKat says:

I vote Honda Goldwing all the way! There ain't nothing better! Quieter, smoother ride, slicker body, great for long distance travel, heated seats, satellite guidance system, .... and the biggest dang trike you can get! They dwarf the tiny little bitty Harley.

and yes I did say trike not bike... I prefer the trike... again, it's bigger. I love bigger. :)

Nothing beats a GoldWing!

MilwHondaOwner says:

Who are the uninformed that think 1. Harley is 100% American made and 2. Honda is still all Japanese made? Every person I know who's owned both brands says Honda is a MUCH better bike but peer pressure had them buy & ride the Harley. If you want to spend the money for the name - go for it, but if you want the better bike it's clearly Honda!

Spunky says:

Sorry bigRUNT, but every Honda i've owned were made in America. So you can hold off on the jingoism. Very few Harleys every maintain the values people claim (just depends on how easily the seller can find a sucker). Don't compare age, compare condition and mileage. On that level, resale values stay about the same.

Spunky says:

Sorry, but it boils down to SHOW vs GO. Harley has only recently focused on innovation again (other than just moving the leather tassels around the bike from year to year). For now, Honda still leads in power, fuel efficiency, durability, and bang-for-the-buck.

FondaHonda says:

over the last 24 years i have ridden almost every kind and type of bike there is and in all honesty the worst bike every was my brothers harley! it handles, stops and is as smooth as a freight train! he chopped it in for a VFR750 Honda!

just read the rationale for harley; its about sounds, looks pretty and misplaced brand loyalty. For pete sake ... pretty!!

bikes are for riding and as rides go, harleys are the worst! harleys are not for hardcore riders ... its for pussies!

Rider says:

If you want sound buy a cd. If you want to be a poser, get a Harley. If riding is your goal, get a Honda.
(The real harley RIDERS are cool and I have never had one bad mouth any bike I was on).

ActualRider says:

liquid cooled > air cooled
chain drive > belt drive
spending less money > spending more money
innovation > trading on a name
open-mindedness > blind fanaticism
Do the math.

Patrick says:

Why spend 20k plus for a POS Harley that breaks down all the time when you can get a Honda that looks just as good for 1/3 of the price and the piece of mind that comes with high quality engeneering?

bdkz says:

Gotta go with Honda!

What's this I hear about a Honda-Harley deal???

No way Jose, it's a dead-end ...

This goes to prove my point that HARLEY is indeed a better motorcyle than HONDA. And, what's that they say? If you can't BEAT 'em, BUY 'em?

Honda-Harley deal, a dead-end - Posted on June 25, 2007

On Friday, rumors were circulating that Honda Motor Co. reportedly was eyeing American classic Harley-Davidson. However, the Japanese automaker denied the talk. Nonetheless, the rabble-rousing happened to drive up Harley shares $3, closing the week at $62.55. But a Honda-Harley deal makes little sense for Honda, and not just because Harley has a $16 billion market cap. As BloggingStocks points out, Harley customers are fiercely nationalistic, so if it fell in to the hands of Honda, most Harley riders would go elsewhere for new bikes. So if Honda's looking for a deal, its money would be better spent on Jaguar and Land Rover, which Ford Motor Co. may sell. --Matthew Wurtzel.

Harley-Davidson FAQs

Harley-Davidson Motor Company (, formerly HDI) (often abbreviated H-D or Harley) is an American motorcycle manufacturer. Founded in Milwaukee, Wisconsin during the first decade of the 20th century, it was one of two major American manufacturers to survive the Great Depression. Harley-Davidson also survived a media-accelerated negative image of motorcyclists, a period of poor quality control, and competition with Japanese manufacturers.

The company sells heavyweight (over 750 cc) motorcycles designed for cruising on the highway. Harley-Davidson motorcycles (popularly known as "Harleys") have a distinctive design and exhaust note. They are especially noted for the tradition of heavy customization that gave rise to the chopper-style of motorcycle. Except for the modern VRSC model family, current Harley-Davidson motorcycles reflect the styles of classic Harley designs. Harley-Davidson's attempts to establish itself in the light motorcycle market have met with limited success and have largely been abandoned since the 1978 sale of its Italian Aermacchi subsidiary.

Harley-Davidson sustains a loyal brand community which keeps active through clubs, events, and a museum. Licensing of the Harley-Davidson logo accounts for almost 5% of the company's net revenue.

In addition to manufacturing motorcycles under its own name and its licensing and accessories line, Harley-Davidson's operations include Custom Vehicle Operations, which makes special editions of Harley models with larger engines, the Buell Motorcycle Company, a manufacturer of Harley-engined sportbikes and a middleweight "beginner" bike, and Italian motorcycle manufacturer MV Agusta, including their Cagiva subsidiary.

The 'other' guy ...

It's HONDA!

Honda FAQs

Honda's line of luxury cars are branded Acura in North America. More recently they have ventured into mountain bikes.
