Why Harmony Fine Arts?

My Story

The idea behind this program came from my own home schooling experience. I was always searching for a plan for picture study and composer study. It seemed simple enough to do myself but I just never did it. I also wanted to use the classical style and Charlotte Mason's ideas for our art and music. I wanted all the great resources organized in the four-year cycle of history. I wanted it to be flexible and easy to use. I never found what I was searching for so I decided to do it myself!

What exactly is Harmony Fine Arts?

How to Use the Plan

The plan includes a week by week schedule, materials and supplies list, and an explanation of how to implement our suggestions.

Purchase the books from our website directly, borrow them from the library, or use online resources given in the year plans.

After you receive your plan, decide which materials and options you wish to use, and gather your art supplies, you are all set. Each week you can open your plan and enjoy great art and music!

Art Appreciation

Three Different Options per Year

Option One schedules an artist and list of recommended paintings for picture study. All the paintings are found on the internet for easy viewing.

Option Two schedules an art appreciation book and short follow-up activities.

Option Three schedules art postcards and themed coloring books that correspond to the artist or time period. In many grade levels, Option Three is a schedule for using a particular Artistic Pursuits book.

Music Appreciation

Composers

The plan acquaints you with the major composers by offering book suggestions to go along with the listening schedule. You may choose to only follow the plan to listen to the suggested composers.

Art and Music Appreciation in 3 Levels

Which level do I want?

Grammar Level: Grades 1-4

All plans in the grammar stage will outline exactly what to do each week with a variety of options. The grammar stage is a basic introduction to the great artists and composers. Students will view artwork, talk about art, and have a chance to explore various art supplies. The music plan offers a wide variety of composers to listen to and learn about each month.

Logic Level: Grades 5-8
The basic logic stage plan introduces the child to the instruments of the orchestra, artists and composers in a chronological order, and art skills in drawing, water coloring, and with polymer clay. Depending on which option you choose in art, these objectives will be covered in varying degrees.

Rhetoric Level: Grades 9-12
The basic plan for the rhetoric stage is to cover art history chronologically using the Story of Painting by Sister Wendy Beckett, the Annotated Mona Lisa, and online viewing. Music appreciation is planned out using the Classical Music Experience and online listening. There are also optional plans for using Artistic Pursuits Sr. High Book 1 and 2 as well as Sketching with Pen and Ink.

For all year plans, see the specific grade for a description of what is covered and what materials and resources are used.

Books that Inspired this Plan

The whole idea for Harmony Fine Arts grew from trying to put together a plan for art and music appreciation that would use the history cycles from The Well-Trained Mind. I wanted my art and music study to correspond to the four year history cycles. I also wanted to make it possible to have picture study in the style of Charlotte Mason for each of the artists so I needed a plan that put down the artist along with four pieces of their art for my children to view. I wanted the same well thought out plan for composer study.
