Dogs need comfort - we want style!

Our dogs are members of our families. We want them to feel wonderful and look great - at home and out on the town.

Most veterinarians are now recommending harnesses, instead of collars, for small dogs. But there are a gazillion different kinds of harnesses - how do you know which is best for you and your pup?

Relax! Our staff at Golly Gear is happy to answer all your harness questions. We're here to help.

So - what's the difference?

What kinds of harness is right for my dog?

There are new designs and styles coming out all the time, but most harnesses can be described as one of the following types:

Dogs come in all shapes, lengths, sizes, widths and weights; even within a single breed.
For a proper fit: Measure your dog's girth (all the way around) just behind his front legs.

Step-in Harnesses

Our choice for everyday function with style!

Step-in harnesses are rapidly becoming dog owners' favorites - for good reason. Step-ins are easy to use, choke-free, adjustable, comfortable for most dogs and come in a variety of patterns and sizes.
This is the basic design that all Step-in Harnesses have: two straps collected by a buckle at the ends, with a perpendicular strap between, forming the spaces for the dog's front legs. The dog steps into the harness (hence the name), the ends are brought up over the dog's back and the buckle is clasped. Easy!

Standard (Roman) Harnesses

A familiar favorite updated for the 21st century!

Standard (or Roman) harnesses are the ones most people are familiar with. In the past, many straps going every-which-way, unclear back and front, etc. made them difficult to use. Not anymore. The style has been updated by many manufacturers so they're comfortable to wear and easy to put on.

The Roman Harness slips over the dog's head, one leg goes into the "armhole," the bottom strap is brought around and buckled. Straps can be adjusted for a custom fit. Most harnesses use a "parachute clasp" which snaps shut, so your dog won't have time to wiggle away. There's no more fumbling to align the buckle and strap. If you haven't tried a Roman harness in a while, it may be the time to revisit this old favorite with a modern twist.

Vest Harnesses

Looks great! No choking!

The Vest-type Harness is exploding in popularity for good reason - no pressure on your dog's neck. The D-ring for the leash is on the dog's back, far away from the dog's vulnerable throat. There are a variety of styles to choose among; functional, sporty, trendy and fun.
The sportier vest harnesses, like the Puppia Soft Harness, do not adjust at the neck. Most of the vest harnesses have a wide range of sizes available so most dogs under 25 lbs. will find a good fit. Measure your dog's girth, just behind his front legs.
To put it on your dog: Slip the harness over your dog's neck, draw one paw through the "armhole," bring the strap around under his tummy and clasp.

All-in-one harnesses

Leash and harness as a single unit

Never go looking for a leash again! These All-in-one harnesses come with the leash attached, just pop them other the dog's head, bring her front paws through the "armholes," tighten the closure and away you go! These are particularly good for dogs who are naked in the house - just pop it on and go! Soft and comfortable, these are great for dogs who love to stay with their walking partners. Easy to use and adorable, as well!

Available in vest style.

and step-in style.

Easy-on harnesses

Industrial-strength Velcro is the key for these harnesses

Harnesses with hook-and-loop (Velcrotm)closures are easy for everyone. Set the harness on the dog's back and just smooth it closed around his neck and belly! A good fit is crucial, most do not adjust. Because they have fairly good coverage and a snug fit, these are excellent choices for "escape artists."

Unique Harnesses

For the dog who won't be lost in the crowd

Elegant in its simplicity, the Shoulder Collar is made from buttery-soft leather, which wraps your dog in comfort. The dog's legs go through the holes, and the two sides overlap on her back for security. Sized in one-inch increments, the Shoulder Collar is patented in the U.S.

The EzyDog Harness has similarities to other styles - step-in styling, highly adjustable, narrow webbing straps - its unique feature is the pliable chest plate that conforms to your dog's shape and distributes pressure away from his neck.

The Backpack Harness allows even little dogs to help out! Let her carry her own "poop bag" for a change!

The Tinki Vest is simply elegant. Two Ultrasuede Straps, joined together at the back, closing with extra-strong hook and loop closures.

The Rope-n-Go Harness has no hardware at all!

We made a video (the birds were very, very loud that day) demonstrating how to put on this innovative Rope-n-Go Harness!

Putting on the Rope-n-Go harness

The hardware-free Rope-n-Go harness looks complicated, but it's easy to put on and use once you've seen how to do it!

Figure-eight harnesses

Actually - great for cats!

Figure-eight harnesses can be useful, especially for tiny puppies. With the single strap design, they cannot be adjusted around the neck and tummy separately. With the possibility of tightening around the dog's neck, they're just not a favorite of ours.
