Harriet Quimby - First Woman To Fly The English Channel

Harriet Quimby, shown in the photo to the left, was the first American woman to earn a pilot's license in 1911, and she was the second woman in the world to do so. Her contributions to early aviation history were many.

Harriet Quimby Information

Harriet Quimby was born in 1875 in Michigan. As an adult, after moving to California, she desired to became an actress and later became a journalist and moved to New York.

After taking flying lessons in 1911, she became the first woman licensed pilot in the United States. She was killed in an airplane mishap in 1912. She was at an airplane show called The Boston Meet when she met her untimely death.

Harriet Quimby was honored by the United States Postal Service with a postage stamp in 1991.
