Harriet Tubman, aka The Moses of Her People

When escaping slaves fled extreme cruelty at the hands of their masters, Harriet Tubman could be counted on to help guide them on their perilous journey to freedom.

During the mayhem of the Civil War, she helped escaping slaves navigate their path to freedom, in spite of great personal danger.

Once free, she became active in the battle to forever ban slavery, and restore the dignity of her people. She not only blazed the trail to freedom,  she later served as an active abolitionist, became a spy for federal forces in South Carolina, and also served  as a medical nurse!

Her heroic efforts forever changed the face of America...let's learn more about her valiant efforts to help people regain their lives!

She Blazed a Trail to Freedom In Spite of Grave, Personal Danger

Harriet Tubman was a wanted woman...she faced the threat of imprisonment as she continually placed herself in harms way in order to rescue her friends and family.

On at least 11 separate occasions, she led her family members and friends on the hazardous journey to safety northward into the friendly territories of Canada.

She used gospel songs as the foundation of a code that would tell escapees when it was "time to move!"

This book discusses the fascinating story of a secret communication system that was used by escaping slaves. Signs, maps and symbols for safety were stitched into their quilts. When escaping slaves needed directions on their journey to freedom, they would simply look for one of those quilts that would help guide them through hostile territories.

It's a fascinating study in creative communication, the tenacity of the human spirit, and the courage of people who were determined to live out their lives in their God given freedom. It's an amazing story, and I highly recommend this book!

*Loved* this lens. I read Cobblestone as a kid. The subscription was a gift from my grandfather, who was a history buff, and every time an issue arrived I'd try to get to it before my sister did. I'm glad to know it's still around!

Is there still that cartoon raven? I can't remember what his name was!
