Honeydukes for muggles

The genius of J.K. Rowling hasn't just created a great fantasy series, or a spin off movie set, but also... an intriguing new collection of sweets. Some she invented, some she gave a new (magical) spin on, others are simply for ever after associated with Harry Potter, Dumbledore and the other characters of the Harry Potter series.

Following the succes of the book, some of these assorted candy has found its way to the muggle public - though usually in a slightly less magical variety.

In the books these are sold in four places: Honeydukes, the Hogwarts Express tea trolley, by the Weasly twins at Hogwarts and by them in Diagon Alley their new store called Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes.

Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans

Jelly beans...

A lot of vendors have hopped on this train, after all it takes no magic to create a set of jelly beans that have a lot of different flavors. I've listed the ones that were either the most affordable, or the best reviewed (or both).

Harry Potter Bertie Bott's Jelly Beans Bag 3oz.

This set is the most true to the Harry Potter story, containing not just delicious candy, but also tastes like Spaghetti, Rotten Egg, Soap, Earthworm, and Bacon.

Packaged in a suitable candy bag.

List of Magical sweets in Harry Potter

Here come the magical candy...

  • Acid Pops (will burn a hole right through your tongue)

  • Blood-flavored lollipops (for vampires, presumably)

  • Canary Cream: developed by the Weasley twins and tried out first on Neville Longbottom. They turn people into large canaries for a short while.

  • Chocoballs - full of strawberry mousse and clotted cream

  • Chocolate (used as an antidote for contact with the Dark Arts)

  • Chocolate Frogs - come with a collectable card of a famous witch or wizard in each pack

  • Cockroach Clusters (real cockroaches in them, apparently)

  • Drooble's Best Blowing Gum (fill the room with bluebell-colored bubbles that refuse to pop for days)

  • Exploding bon-bons

  • Fizzing Whizbees (massive sherbet balls that make you levitate)

  • Fudge Flies

  • Ice Mice ("hear your teeth chatter and squeak!")

  • Jelly Slugs

  • Licorice Wands

  • Pepper Imps (tiny black candy that makes you "Breathe fire for your friends!")

  • Peppermint Toads - peppermint creams shaped like toads ("hop realistically in the stomach!")

  • Sugar quills (suck on them in class and you look like you're thinking)

  • Ton-Tongue Toffee. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the Weasley twins share an invention publicly for the first time by giving Dudley Dursley these. His tongue swells up.

  • Toothflossing Stringmints ("splintery," Hermione bought some for her dentist parents)

  • Squeaking sugar mice - Flitwick gave a box of these to Harry after the interview was published in The Quibbler.

Chocolate frogs

These obviously don't jump on your window as the chocolate frogs do in the Harry Potter movie, but as one of the favorite sweets Ron and Harry like, why not try the muggle version? You'll have to make your own though as apparently chocolate frogs are not something sold in the US or Canada. Which is weird, we have had chocolate frogs in our Dutch candy stores for as long as I can remember.

I've picked the most practical mold I could find.

List of Non magical candy in the Harry Potter books

  • Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans

  • Drooble's Best Blowing Gum

  • Lemon drops (in the US version) aka sherbet lemons (in the UK): a Muggle candy Dumbledore likes.

  • Cauldron Cakes - sold on the Hogwarts Express

  • Chocolate gateau

  • Cream cakes, made by the House-Elves of Hogwarts

  • éclairs, made by the House-Elves of Hogwarts

  • Peppermint humbugs.
Hagrid had some in his pockets in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, chapter 5, and they were served at the welcoming feast in 1991. These are a British kind of candy that is white, hard and has red stripes.

  • Pumpkin Pasties

  • Pumpkin Juice

  • Treacle fudge (a specialty of Hagrid's; cements your mouth shut)

  • Treacle tart

Licorice wands

I did not actually find anybody selling licorice wands, but hey - licorice that has an oblong shape can be seen as a wand, can't it? So here's some real licorice without artificial flavorings.

As a Dutch person I insist. Licorice is one of our national foods you know, unofficially of course...

Which do you think is the most awful of the disgusting Honey Dukes candy?

Lemon Drops or Sherbet Lemons

Sherbet Lemons are NOT the same thing as Lemon Drops, but Sherbet Lemons were replaced by Lemon Drops in the US version of the Harry Potter series. Confused? Let's say that both are lemon like sweets and since I have only been able to find you Lemon drops, I guess you'll have to be content with that.

Chocolate Gateau

That is: chocolate cake

This is hardly magical in the ordinary sense of the word, but these do look delicious. The price point is a bit above what you'd spend on a children's party, but perhaps this can be saved for the adults after?

Acid Pops

I suppose these will NOT burn a hole right through your tongue like the ones from HoneyDukes do, still should be fun to have at your next Harry Potter party, shouldn't it?

My kids love the Harry Potter Candy because it is so unusual and reminds them of the movie. Borders Books and Music used to carry the chocolate-covered frogs and Bertie Bott's jelly beans, but since Harry Potter lost some of its popularity due to the surge of the Twilight series I can't find it there anymore, so I've been shopping around on the internet. Amazon is not the only store out there that carries Harry Potter candy, and some of the other stores not only have items available that Amazon doesn't have in stock, but has those at great prices. The only thing that bugs me about some items is that you can only buy them as a caselot, and I don't know what to do with that much candy. BUT, if you have a birthday party and need cool treats, that would be an excellent opportunity. Just shop around!

Yummy lens, very attractive & blessed. We once had a very successful Harry Potter birthday party. The food was all themed, at least in name if not exactly from the books. I think I'll be adding some Harry Potter candy to our Christmas stockings this year.

I'm a great Harry Potter fan. I've read and reread the books and seen all the movies on DVD (most in the theater as well). (more)
