The story of HARRY POTTER begins before he was even BORN - with the

PROPHECY!

THE PROPHECY - In an INTERVIEW for a job at HOGWARTS SCHOOL of WITCHCRAFT and WIZARDRY - SYBIL TRELAWNEY told ALBUS DUMBLEDORE -

"The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches...Born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies...and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not...and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives...."

SEVERUS SNAPE - who had overheard the PROPHECY - was secretly WORKING for VOLDEMORT and he PASSED it on to the DARK LORD.

HARRY POTTER CO UK -
HARRY JAMES POTTER - was born on July 31st 1980. He was the only child of JAMES POTTER and LILY EVANS.

JAMES and LILY had fought VOLDEMORT in the past - THREE TIMES they had battled and THREE TIMES had SURVIVED. Harry was only FIFTEEN MONTHS OLD when he was left an ORPHAN. His PARENTS were by KILLED by the evil LORD VOLDEMORT at GODRICS HOLLOW.

VOLDEMORT had SEARCHED them out because he thought HARRY was the CHOSEN ONE. Protected by his mother, LILY the young HARRY POTTER remarkably SURVIVED the ATTACK!

IN FACT with only a LIGHTNING BOLT SCAR on his FOREHEAD. he became THE one to SURVIVE the KILLING CURSE of the DARK LORD.

BUT and it's a BIG BUT - WHY DID VOLDEMORT not CHOOSE - NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM? - who was BORN on JULY 30th, and whose PARENTS had also FOUGHT with VOLDEMORT on at least THREE occasions?

HARRY POTTER CO UK - It is said that the SACRIFICIAL LOVE of HARRY's mother LILY bestowed MAGICAL POWERS that would HELP him RESIST ATTACKS by the WICKED VOLDEMORT.

Following the TRAGIC LOSS of his PARENTS the young HARRY was taken in begrudgingly by LILY's sister, PETUNIA and her husband, VERNON DURSLEY. They lived in the SUBURBS of LONDON at:

----------4 PRIVET DRIVE,
----------LITTLE WHINGING,
----------SURREY,
----------ENGLAND.

There was very LITTLE LOVE for HARRY in the WORSLEY's HOUSE. The EVANS SISTERS had once been close, but PETUNIA was born a MUGGLE and had been JEALOUS of LILY's success at HOGWARTS.

She RESENTED having to CARE for LILY's SON, and DUDLEY WORSLEY was the CENTRE of ATTENTION for his PARENTS. HARRY was SADLY NEGLECTED, being treated more like an UNPAID SERVANT than a FAMILY MEMBER.

HARRY was told that his PARENTS had DIED in a CAR CRASH, and he had NO KNOWLEDGE of his MAGICAL POWERS.

PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS -
HARRY POTTER at 11 yrs - was a SMALL, SKINNY boy with BLACK MESSY HAIR, he had a LIGHTNING BOLT SCAR on his FOREHEAD, his EYES were BRILLIANT GREEN,and he WORE GLASSES.

In the year of his 11th BIRTHDAY - HARRY had begun to receive MAIL which was CONCEALED by his UNCLE - LETTERS FLOODED through the LETTER BOX. The LETTERS were recognised by VERNON as being from the WORLD of MAGIC!

VERNON DURSLEY had an IRRATIONAL FEAR and HATRED of anything MAGICAL. As the VOLUME of LETTERS increased The FAMILY moved to a REMOTE ISLAND to escape the MAGICAL INTRUSION in their lives.Then came HARRY's 11th BIRTHDAY - which would have passed UNNOTICED by the WORSLEY's - but they were FOLLOWED by HAGRID who 'INSISTED' on delivering the LETTER by HAND!

The LETTER was an INVITATION to join HOGWARTS SCHOOL. This was the BEGINNING of HARRY POTTER'S career as a WIZARD.

HARRY set off with some TREPIDATION on the road to WIZARDOM.

HOGWARTS SCHOOL is LOCATED in the SCOTTISH HIGHLANDS

Standing on KINGS CROSS STATION feeling confused - HARRY was BEFRIENDED by the WEASLEY family, who show him how to PASS through the MAGICAL WALL to PLATFORM 9¾, where the HOGWARTS EXPRESS is waiting.

On the TRAIN he met RON WEASLEY - who tells him someone tried to ROB a VAULT at GRINGOTTS BANK, and who was to become HIS BEST FRIEND along with ...............

HERMIONE GRANGER - The BOYS later become FRIENDS with HERMIONE when RON makes a CUTTING REMARK about HERMIONE being BILLY NO MATES and NOT HAVING any FRIENDS.

HERMIONE takes REFUGE in the BATHROOM and has a GOOD CRY! Unfortunately a MOUNTAIN TROLL, has also taken refuge but he's NOT CRYING! Fortunately, RON regrets his MEANNESS and he and HARRY search for HERMIONE, and RESCUE her from the GIANT TROLL!

When DISCOVERED by PROFESSORS McGONOGALL, SNAPE and QUIRRELL, the quick thinking HERMIONE claims she was in the BATHROOM looking for the TROLL. Her ABILITY to LIE so CONVINCINGLY to TEACHERS impressed HARRY and RON, as it also SAVED them from PUNISHMENT for being WHERE theySHOULDN'T BE.

ONCE at HOGWARTS - HARRY was CHOSEN by the SORTING HAT for GRYFFINDORS HOUSE along with RON and HERMIONE.The HAT assigns MOST pupils INSTANTLY - particularly when sending DRACO,CRABBE and DOYLE to SLYTHERIN - but with HARRY the HAT has a TELEPATHIC discussion about whether his AMBITION would make SLYTHERIN the best CHOICE for him. HARRY protests and is placed in GRYFFINDOR.

While at HOGWARTS - POTTER became a STUDENT of WITCHCRAFT and WIZARDRY.

HOBBIES - He volunteered for the SPORT of QUIDDITCH, and became an accomplished CHASER.

HARRY's years at HOGWARTS saw him making some of the BEST FRIENDS of HIS LIFE. Along with HERMIONE and RON, he became firm friends with NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM, SEAMUS, LUNAR LOVEGOOD and of course GINNY WEASLEY.

HARRY had a CONSTANT RIVALRY with, and DISLIKE for DRACO MALFOY! When DRACO showed his SNOBBERY and DISLIKE for the less RICH WEASLEY FAMILY and HERMIONE's MUGGLE BACKGROUND - HARRY took STRONGLY against him for his PREJUDICED ATTITUDES.

In FIGHTING EVIL - HARRY got SUPPORT from his FRIENDS at HOGWARTS, He had the HELP of his WAND, which was the 'BROTHER' of LORD VOLDEMORT'S, consisting of HOLLY and FEATHERS from DUMBLEDORE'S PHEONIX. In addition he had an INVISIBLE CLOAK, the MARAUDERS MAP to LOCATE PEOPLE, a POCKET SNEAKASCOPE, and a TWO WAY MIRROR.

HARRY's FIRST ADVENTURE -

The PHILOSOPHER'S STONE was said to hold 2 SPECIAL PROPERTIES:

1. It was believed by ALCHEMISTS to be capable of changing LEAD into GOLD, (transmutation) under the RIGHT ASTRONOMICAL INFLUENCES.

2. The PHILOSOPHER'S STONE was also believed to contain the SECRETof IMMORTALITY, so that the "ELIXIR OF LIFE" supposedly could be DISTILLED from it.

THE STORY - HARRYand HAGRID go to to DIAGON ALLEY to buy BOOKS and EQUIPMENT for HOGWARTS. They go to GRINGOTTS BANK to draw MONEY. HARRY buys a WAND which he discovers to be the 'TWIN' of VOLDEMORT'S! He also discovers he is FAMOUS among WIZARDS as "THE BOY WHO LIVED."

* While HARRY is relaxing after the WELCOMING DINNER at HOGWARTS,- PROFESSOR SNAPE glares at him and he feels a STAB of PAIN in the SCAR on his FOREHEAD.

* HARRY and RON visit HAGRID, who lives in a RUSTIC hOUSE on the EDGE of the FORBIDDEN FOREST. They learn that the ATTEMPTED ROBERRYat GRINGOTTS BANK happened when HAGRID and HARRY were in DIAGON ALLEY and HARRY recalls HAGRID leaving the BANK with a SMALL PACKAGE.

* DRACO MALFOY is TROUBLE for HARRY and FRIENDS from the word GO! During their first FLYING LESSONS, - NEVILLE LONGBOTTOM breaks his WRIST.

* DRACO takes advantage to THROW the forgetful NEVILLE's broomsick - REMEMBRALL high in the air. HARRY gives chase on his BROOMSTICK, catching the REMEMBRALL. Spotted by PROFESSOR McGONAGALL, he is appointed the NEW QUIDDITCH SEEKER for the HOUSE.

* DRACO tricks RON and HARRY into an AFTER HOURS adventure. HERMIONEand NEVILLE go with them to keep them OUT of TROUBLE. They find a ROOM GUARDED by a huge 3 HEADED DOG. The group FLEE, but HERMIONE notices the DOG is standing over a TRAP DOOR. HARRY concludes that the FIERCE CREATURE guards the PACKAGE retrieved by HAGRID from GRINGOTTS.

* The evening before Harry's first Quidditch match, HARRY sees SNAPE receiving MEDICAL ATTENTION from FILCH for a THREE HEADED DOG BITE! Playing QUIDDITCH the following day, HARRY's BROOMSTICK goes OUT of. Hermione CONTROL! HERMIONE sees SNAPE watching HARRY and MUTTERING.

* SUSPICIOUS, she SNEAKS over to the PROFESSOR's STAND, and sets SNAPE's ROBE on FIRE! Simultaneously HARRY regains CONTROL of his BROOMSTICK and catches the GOLDEN SNITCH, and WINS the game for GRYFFINDOR.

* HAGRID refuses to believe that SNAPE was RESPONSIBLE for influencing HARRY. He admits he bought the 3 HEADED DOG - FLUFFY, and tells them the MONSTER is GUARDING a SECRET for PROFESSOR DUMBLEDORE and his associate NICHOLAS FLAMEL.

* HARRY along with the WEASLEYS stays at HOGWARTS for CHRISTMAS. He receives a MYSTERIOUS gift of an INVISIBILITY CLOAK. This comes in very handy for HARRY when he searches the LIBRARY's RESTRICTED SECTION for information about the mysterious FLAMEL. When an ENCHANTED BOOK triggers an ALARM he has to evade SNAPE and FILCH.

* ESCAPING he HIDES in a room containing the MIRROR of ERISED, which shows his PARENTS and their ANCESTORS. When HARRY can't stay away from the MIRROR he is RESCUED by PROFESSOR DUMBLEDORE, who explains that the MIRROR reflects that which the VIEWER most DESPERATELY DESIRES!

* At the start of the NEW TERM - DRACO is up to his old tricks, and plays a prank on NEVILLE. HARRY comforts NEVILLE with a SWEET, which came with a collectible CARD. On the CARD it said that FLAMEL was 665 year-old alchemist who was the KEEPER of the the only known PHILOSOPHER's STONE.

* A few days later HARRY follows SNAPE sneaking towards the OUTSKIRTS of the FORBIDDEN FOREST. There he overhears SNAPE talking about the PHILOSOPHER's STONE, to PROFESSOR QUIRRELL, asking him if he has found a way past the 3 HEADED DOG. He overhears SNAPE angrily telling QUIRRELL to choose the SIDE he is ON.

* HARRY concludes that SNAPE is trying to STEAL the STONE with the HELP of QUINIUS QUIRRELL's magical DEFENCES!

* ANIMAL LOVING - HAGRID is raising a BABY DRAGON, which is against WIZARD LAW. HARRY and FRIENDS help HAGRID to SMUGGLE it OUT of the COUNTRY.

* DRACO follows, in order to get them into TROUBLE, and so does NEVILLE, to WARN them. The FRIENDS cause a DISTRACTION for the DRAGON to escape, and they get CAUGHT. HARRY also loses the INVISIBILTY CLOAK.

* As part of their PUNISHMENT, all FIVE including MALFOY are sent to help HAGRID RESCUE an INJURED UNICORN in the FORBIDDEN FOREST. They are DIVIDED into 2 GROUPS -

* HARRY and DRACO find the UNICORN dead, lying in a POOL of its own BLOOD. A DARK HOODED figure drinks the BLOOD. DRACO turns tail and FLEES in TERROR. The HOODED FIGURE moves towards HARRY as he is TRANSFIXED and rendered UNCONSCIOUS by a terrible PAIN spreading from his SCAR.

* FIRENZE the CENTAUR, tends to HARRY - who wakes to find that the HOODED FIGURE has disappeared. FIRENZE takes him back to SCHOOL, and on the way tells HARRY - that DRINKING the BLOOD of a UNICORN will SAVE the LIFE of someone with MORTAL INJURIES, but leave them only just ALIVE. He thinks VOLDEMORT drank the BLOOD to gain just enough STRENGTH to reach THE PHILOSOPHERS STONE and the ELIXIR of LIFE.

On his return HARRY finds the INVISIBILITY CLOAK in his BED.

* HARRY wonders how the DRAGONS EGG came into HAGRID's POSSESSION. On questioning HAGRID he discoversthat a HOODED STRANGER gave him the EGG along with a FEW DRINKS in exchange for the INFORMATION of how to GET PAST the 3 HEADED DOG. HAGRID unwittingly told the stranger that SIMPLY PLAYING MUSIC would send the DOG to SLEEP.

* HARRY realises that one of the DEFENCES is no longer SECURE. He rushes off to inform PROFESSOR DUMBLEDORE, but he has just left for an IMPORTANT MEETING. He concludes that SNAPE has lured the HEADMASTER away with a FAKE MESSAGE, so he could STEAL the STONE.

* Voldemort on the back of Professor Quirrell's head at the climax of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in the film.Under the cover of the INVISIBILITY CLOAK, - HARRY, RON and HERMIONE go find the 3 HEADED DOG. Playing a FLUTE - HARRY sends the FEARSOME BEAST to SLEEP. They PASS through the TRAPDOOR.

* The INTREPID TRIO encounter a series of CHALLENGES - The LETHAL FLYING KEY is CAPTURED by HARRY. HERMIONE is smart enough to BY PASS the treacherous DEVIL's SNARE, and RON sacrifices himself on the GIANT CHESS BOARD so HARRY can reach the FINAL CHAMBER.

* HARRY goes on alone, he finds QUIRRELL, who TIES HIM UP with MAGICAL ROPE. He learns that QUIRRELL admits that he let the TROLL into the SCHOOL, and it was HE not SNAPE who tried to KILL HARRY during the QUIDDITCH MATCH. (Luckily he had been KNOCKED DOWN by HERMIONE in her rush to GET to SNAPE.) Professor SNAPE was actually trying to prevent QUIRRELS attempt!

* QUIRRELL serves VOLDEMORT and, after FAILING to STEAL the PHILOSOPHER's STONE from GRINGOTTS, he allowed himself to be POSSESSED by the DARK LORD to allow VOLDEMORT to work through him. The only OBJECT in the room is the MIRROR of ERISED with no sign of the STONE. All that is VISIBLE to VOLDEMORT through the MIRROR is him using the ELIXIR of LIFE - as that is WHAT he DESIRES!

* VOLDEMORT orders HARRY to be UNTIED, and he is FORCED to stand in front of the MIRROR. HARRY SEES the STONE - because he wants to FIND it not USE it - which drops into his POCKET. The HORRIFIC face of VOLDEMORT is revealed at he back of QUIRRELL's HEAD. In trying to GRAB the STONE he touches HARRY, and QUIRRELL's SKIN begins to BURN. During the struggle HARRY PASSES OUT.

* HARRY awakes in the SCHOOL HOSPITAL, where PROFESSOR DUMBLEDORE explains how he SURVIVED because of his MOTHER's SACRIFICIAL LOVE, and that the creature VOLDEMORT couldn't COMPREHEND such love!

THE PHILOSOPHERS STONE HAS NOW BEEN DESTROYED!

VOLDEMORT left QUIRRELL to die,

and will RETURN by SOME OTHER MEANS in other

ADVENTURES of HARRY POTTER.
