From Halloween to Harry Potter - Enjoy Your Fall Parties

Fall, Thanksgiving, Halloween and Harry Potter are all themes that are fun for dinner parties and entertaining, especially in the months when the leaves turn color. The colors and themes of September, October and November can inspire your table setting ideas, as well as your party themes.

There are lots of dinnerware patterns to choose from, and to mix and match, to express your creativity and pull off the best ever party.

Halloween is second only to Christmas as the most-decorated-for holiday. Thanksgiving is a time for family gatherings and events. Fall birthday and football parties can also take advantage of the colors and motifs that make this time of year special.

And this time of year is also great for a Harry Potter theme party. You can have a movie premier party, or weekend movie marathon to celebrate many kinds of events. (The movie for first half of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows will be released in the US on November 19.)

Fall dinnerware patterns can dress up or down. Whether you want your table to be as grand as the dining hall of Christ Church College (Oxford, England) where the Harry Potter dining scenes are filmed, or plan a tailgate cook out for a college football game, there are lots choices in dinnerware and accessories to make the event easier and more fun.

Tips to Mix and Match Your Dinnerware

Color Scheme and Theme Will Make Your Table Setting

Selection of dinnerware for fallStart with a theme. It could be fall in general, or a something more specific, such as Halloween, Harry Potter, Twilight, Harvest Fair or Apple Time. Start with the season, consider the purpose of your event, and let your imagination work for you.

Choose tableware in warm, earthy colors like brown, green, yellow, orange and red. Saturated colors that are vibrant and bold work well because so many of the fall elements are these colors. Accents in gold or white will highlight your table setting, and black can bring out the spooky side, if that relates to your theme.

Select glassware, serving pieces or other accents in rich shades like purple, hunter green or dark orange. They will make your table setting even more lively. Shiny glass or metal pieces will add sparkle.

Use centerpieces and decorations based on common fall themes of pumpkins, leaves, acorns or apples. All these things symbolize the harvest, reaping the rewards of the growing season.

Once you have the starting point, the other elements will "fall" into place with ease.

The meals are served on pewter dishes, and they use similar goblets. If this is your party theme, similar wares will help you set the stage. You could also use the colors of your favorite Hogwarts house, or mix them up:

  • Gryffindor colors are scarlet and gold. Its emblem is the lion.

  • Hufflepuff colors are yellow and black. Its mascot is the badger.

  • Ravenclaw colors are blue and bronze. Its mascot is the eagle.

  • Slytherin colors are green and silver. Its mascot is the serpent.

Birthdays, Anniversaries, Even Weddings

  • If leaves, acorns or pumpkins appeal to you, let these items inspire your table setting.

  • Remember your own childhood and school days, and you'll probably find that fall events included these elements, as well as scarecrows, hay bales, apples, corn shocks and other agricultural items.

  • The farming traditions of America can enliven your table setting. The warm colors of the season -- browns, ochre yellow, orange and red -- will evoke cooler days and harvest time.

And, when fall is your theme...you can get accents for your centerpiece from your own yard or farmers market.

Plan a Game-Day Buffet or Tailgating Party

Feast With Team Spirit, Outdoors or Indoors

Waring Pro BFS50B Professional Buffet Server and Warming TrayTailgating...if you're into it, you're INTO it! College football is the most popular, followed by NFL games. As for the tableware, your team colors and mascots are the obvious choice.
  • Select tableware in materials that will meet your needs. If you're outdoors, then non-breakable types are probably the best. (For an indoor game-day buffet, other selections may work better.)

  • Use a team-appropriate color scheme. If you have to satisfy more than one set of team colors, you can mix up the colors.

  • Choose table cloths or covers, even place mats, to help you get more detail and texture into your table setting. This will give your table a more finished look, even if people are serving themselves and bringing plates and cups to the table.

  • Remember a centerpiece. At least one can be on the main table, or somewhere else prominent in your eating area.

Jazz up your game-day feast with a great table setting, and root for your team in style.
