Showdown Between Wizards, Elves, and Hobbits!

Harry Potter vs. Lord of the Rings - you knew this debate had to turn up sometime!

So which is it... Dumbledore or Gandalf? Harry or Frodo? Voldemort or Sauron? Horcruxes or Rings of Power? House elves or hobbits? Death Eaters or Uruk-hai?

In short, which fantasy world does it for you? Choose a side and join the fight.

But wait! Before you begin... be sure to choose your weapon.

Arm Yourselves, Harry Potter Fans...

No wizard can properly duel without a wand. For that matter, a wizard can't do much at all without a wand, although Snape might beg to differ. And if you happen to be a non-magical muggle or squib, well, just poke your wand in your enemy's eye! That'll show 'em. (Kids, don't try this at home.)

Harry Potter Illuminating Wand

Amazon Price: $35.00 (as of 02/15/2012)Buy Now

Why this particular wand? Because it's a replica of Harry Potter's very own wand. And it has a little light bulb that blinks. The light flashes on or off when you wave it around. So even if you can't cast spells, you can dazzle your enemies by waving a light in their face--right before you jab them and dash off.

Lord of the Rings Fans, Take Up Your Swords!

Sure, you may not be able to do any magic with a sword, but look at it this way: A sword in the hands of a muggle always beats a muggle armed with a wand.

But what if your opponent happens to be a wizard with a wand? I'm afraid you're hosed. But a least you'll look more menacing with a sword. All you need is a good pair of boots to die proudly.

Lord of the Rings Master Replica FX Collectible Sting Sword

Amazon Price: $109.99 (as of 02/15/2012)Buy Now

Crafted in the ancient Elven tradition. It even glows blue and has three settings: ON, OFF, and ORC. Switch it to ORC mode if you want your sword to warn you that evil orcs are in the vicinity.

Grab Your Wand, Staff, or Sword and Join the Fight!

Now that you've picked a side, duke it out here!

Harry Potter!

HarryPotterFan1 says:

They're both good, but Harry Potter is just amazing. Every single person can relate or almost relate to at least one character in the book, and everything is just so different than any other book. LotR is really good too, but in my opinion I'd much rather spend the majority of my time reading HP. I find there's more suspense, and you constantly want to know what's going on. Also, do you know how many people write fanfics based on HP? People(including my whole group of friends and I) ceate complete Harry Potter lives, and such. I wouldn't find it AS amusing to do based of LotR. So, Harry Potter takes the win for me.

carolinaxx3 says:

LotR is fantastic, but I have to go with Harry Potter. I love the world of LotR, but I feel much of the characters are too black and white compared to Harry Potter. Harry Potter does a better job describing the depths of people and what life experiences made them turn out to be they way that they are. (Snape, Voldemort, Draco Malfoy, etc) I did not see so much character depth in LotR. Also, LotR is more redundant and dull, which can be good or bad. Personally, I enjoyed reading Potter more because it really came to life.

Brennan12345 says:

I say how could Lord Of The Rings possibly beat Harry Potter. Its unthinkable.

chayishurr says:

I have only seen the 1st LOTR movie, and frankly I was bored.
It didn't pull me in. I tried reading the 1st book and same thing, I couldn't get into it. Maybe I'll try again in a year and will completely fall in love with it, but Harry Potter has my heart right now. Great plot, great characters, Great writing, it's simply great.

fantasyluver says:

My View:
Harry Potter rox
keeps u jumpin!!!!! & nthin cud hav been redon as in lord of rings if tat idiot had dropped tat ring in de 1st part nthin wud hav happened

aryanthakur says:

harry potter series is much more interestingthanlotr it is more completeandrefined and yes more popular than lotr all over the world

Cocobeans411 says:

Harry Potter!!!

eclecticeducation says:

I love both of the stories, but I think the Harry Potter books were more readable and more enjoyable.

Number1Athlete says:

AHHHHH!!! i cant decide!!! im just going to pick harry potter because i read it before lord of the rings as a kid. They are both great though.

Pip says:

Definitely Harry Potter, I fell asleep during the first LOTR movie. I got through the books more easily but they never grabbed me. I suppose I liked the world of Harry Potter because its setting is set (more or less) in modern times.

fefe says:

Harry Potter, but I haven't really read all of the LOTR books.

Lord of the Rings!

PeterStreep says:

mmm, this is not a fair fight. Lord of the Rings. It is the godfather of all fantasy novels. The Lord of the rings has more depth and is myhthical. Harry Potter is to English and does not contain any history.

xStormtrooperx says:

It has been exposed, the whole first book's concept is a rip off of LotR. Why did Voldemort even need or want the Sorcerer's stone when he CAN'T die anyways? It was supposed to be like the ring of power, if he got it he would be "reborn", plain and simple. She couldn't come up with ideas of her own so she just stole from other works, not LotR aren't the only victims of thievery from HP series.

Not to mention the fact that they live in MODERN TIMES but don't use any modern things. Just look at their outdated castle that looks like it was from 300 years ago. They use freaking candles and radios instead of things that are available to them. I swear JK Rowling can't make up which time period she wants to write her books in.... they are in modern times but use old things from 1800s and 1950s, just makes no sense.

VVVV LOL JohnGrauel royal fucked Harry Potter.

JohnGrauel says:

While the books are set in VERY different eras, one unmistakable occurence of theft is the Black

Riders/Dementors issue. Both cause serious despair and feed off emotions, and both use terror as their main

weapon. ANMD both wear black cloaks. In one interview, the theif claimed she got the idea from a loved one's death.

Well, MAYBE a half truth seeing as how the evidence I just listed cannot be coincidence when paired with a ton

more thefts. Another is The Old Forest, on the borders of the Shire, and the forbidden forest. Both places have

dark, frightening trees, and both are on the borders of a positive land. Also, a forest in The Hobbit, has spiders

just like those in HP. It is called Mirkwood. Sauron was later proven to have dwelt there in secret, while HP's

villian Voldemort frequents the Forbidden Forest a lot in book 1, and once in book 7. Speaking of villians, Sauron

in LOTR is so terrifying that the men of Gondor, a land adjacent to Sauron's land Mordor, is called Him who we do

not name. Just like Voldemort! AND both Sauron AND Voldemort stay alive after inital defeat, Sauron with the One

Ring and Voldemort with his Horcruxes. To make matters worse (or better if the theif gets caught), both books have

talking trees. AND Both books have old men who help out the main characters. Gandalf in LOTR, and DUMBledore(

whose name actually comes from Toilken's flying insect in "The Adventures Of Tom Bombadil". Also, the trolls. The

1st cave troll to be seen in LOTR is strikingly similar to HP's. And in LOTR the creature Gollum talks in 3rd

person. A character named Dobby in HP does too. Gollum remains loyal to Frodo (main charcacter) to a certain

degree and calls Frodo "master". So does Dobby, to HP. In the 1st 3 HP books, Voldemort cannot take physical form.

Neither can Sauron. Hence the Eye Of Sauron. A dog named Fang is owned by Farmer Maggot in LOTR, and Hagrid in HP.

HP's scar can be related to Frodo's, in that both were caused by evil forces. The Mirror Of Galadriel is copied

by the Pensieve. As if all this weren't enough, Longbottom is used by Toilken to describe a tobacco plant, and is

used by Rowling The Theif as a name for a person. Good luck explaining that! Mischevious pair in LOTR= Merry &

Pippin, and in HP, Fred + George. Hurin LOTR) is the keeper of the keys. Hagrid (HP) has the same title. Both

main characters actual parents were murdered, and Frodo has Bilbo to look after him, while HP has Sirius (who

looks almost too much like aragorn. Frodo lives with his uncle Bilbo at the start of LOTR, And Harry lives with

his uncle Vernon. Two villians, Wormtail (HP) and Wormtounge (LOTR) are present. LOTR FTW

RocklawnArts says:

LOTR!

CarrieHiggins says:

Lord of the Rings is so much better than Harry Potter, mainly because of the detail of landscape and characterisation in LOTR, Tolkien spent his entire life creating middle earth and JK spent around 10 years, the vast detail of LOTR does not compare at all to HP. LOTR films are incredible and thoroughly deserving of the amount of awards they have one, all in all the performances, cg, music and directing is better than HP. It is a case where it is about quality instead of quantity. I still believe that ROTK is the greatest film i have ever seen. Film wise and book wise LOTR comes on top, i adore LOTR and cannot see a comparison between it and HP because LOTR is in such a higher league of fantasy filming.

Legolas100 says:

Harry Potter is fool!!! Lord of rings rule!

jhaugerud says:

it has to be lord of the rings, it is an absolute piece of perfection. Also all of Tolkein's ideas were his, J.K Rowling used lots of other writer's ideas. Including Tolkein. Aragog the spider, not unlike Shelob in Lotr, also the Horcrux's which need to be destroyed to kill voldemort, this is the same concept as the one ring being the thing that is needed to be destroyed to destroy Sauron.

ojayznowhere says:

no bother it is one of the best novels of all time I'd still go with Lord of the Rings .. loved watching the character of Captain Barbosa and Jack Sparrow ..
Harry Potter looks like a kids game into a witch-land for me - I hate it.

smilee123 says:

Ok just to let everyone know... I love Harry Potter as well, its just that I think that in Lord of the Rings, loyalty, friendship and trust shows through more. That's not to say that in Harry Potter that isn't there, because I think it is, I just think that Lord of the Rings has more.

inawas4211 says:

first of all lord of the rings rox...!!!the concept of the one ring is sooo cool and deep that it is historic!!..it is a complet fantasy..nothing is related to the earth...accept the race of men...lotr is DEEp it is the deepest fantasy ever....it has history!!!the best vilans n the best heros...!!!m on two twowers so m not much deep but whatever i hav read it was thrilin...n amazin the characters n everythin its not nly lotr but TOLKIEN has written other novels about middle earth...means imagine how great it is...n there r lands byond middle earth like the undying lands WOW....there is no comparison!!!! at all....

amandascloset0 says:

Lord of the Rings hands down. There truly is no comparison in my opinion. While both Novels contained a great deal of imagination. Tolkien went above and beyond. He not only created characters with amazing personality. He gave each of them histories, lineages, even creating languages for each. Tolkien was with out a doubt true literary genius. It is as madcap said timeless. A classic beyond imagination that in my opinion raised the bar for any fantasy writer.

Madcap405 says:

Lord of the rings without question. The book is timeless, and was a crucial point in the creation of the fantasy genre, there was nothing like it before. I think they did an amazing job with the movies too, production, story, characters, depth and emotion...hands down LOTR wins for me. I am enjoying the Harry Potter films, but they have never been close to becoming favourites.

jjj1 says:

I read TLOTR 30+ years ago now and it was my first GREAT book love. For that reason I have to choose it - but Harry Potter is pretty good in its own way.

anna says:

lord of the rings is verrrrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyy goooooooooooooooooooood novel of all times

sauron says:

lord of the rings is the best book plus movie

bq says:

harry potter sucks lotr is great

Anthony says:

Definitely Lord of The Ring. Lord of The Ring is masterpiece books ever written. It even have their own language. And some of the elements in LOTR is being copied by Harry Potter.

LOTR Is one of the best book ever written.

ARAGORN says:

lord of the rings is the book we like the most because lotr is my 1st love

baqir says:

lord of the rings is the best book ever written. harry potter is a copy of lotr

Bomburon says:

This poll is pointless. There is no way to compare the two.
Harry potter: Commercially-driven book
Lord of the rings: Masterpiece that took the author his whole adult life to create.
Lord of the rings will still be remembered into the future, as it has already been proved.
Harry potter, on the other hand, will be gone
