An American Troubadour
Singer and song writer Harry Chapin was born on December 7, 1942. He first performed with his brothers, Tom and Steve, while in his teens. He at first intended to be a film maker, directing Legendary Champions in 1968. The film was nominated for a documentary Academy Award.
By 1971 he had decided to turn his attention to music and released in 1972 the album Head and Tales. On this album was the song that he may be best known, Taxi.
He would continue to record throughout the 1970s with a couple of hits WOLD and Cat's in the Cradle, his only Number 1 song, the lyrics come from a poem his wife Sandy wrote about the relationship between his first husband and his father.
Chapin was a social activist beginning in the mid-70s giving to many charities and working to feed the hungry in the United States.
He died on July 16, 1981 from an heart attack that occurred during a traffic accident. Although it's not known whether the heart attack occurred before or after the accident.
