Potion's Class

Potions Add Fun To Your Party

Potions class gets much of the focus in Harry Potter's new movie. Harry starts excelling in Potions as he follows the instructions of the Half Blood Prince in his copy of Advanced Potion Making text book. Much to the dismay of Hermione and the delight of his new potion's teacher, Horace Slughorn, Harry is now the star pupil and earns a small bottle of Felix Felices, that gives him 12 hours of good luck.

Take advantage of this focus on potions by adding simple chemistry experiments to your birthday party. It makes for an exciting potions class and adds fun to the birthday party. It is amazing what you can do with some simple and safe ingredients. Get some cauldrons together or plastic cups will do too. Actually, it is better to use clear containers, so that you can see the changes inside. You can better see the bubbles and of course the changes in colors. Your ingredients should include vinegar, baking soda, red cabbage juice and a variety of colored waters and sodas. Give them some magical names, like Dragon Blood, Bat Scales and Acromantula Venom. You know that when you add some vinegar and baking soda together, your potion will bubble over. Adding red cabbage juice to different solutions will change their colors, depending on the pH factor of the solution. A low pH (acidic) will give the liquid a red or purple color, while a high pH (basic) will color the liquid a blue-green to greenish-yellow color.

Science and magic make for strange bedfellows. You wouldn't think that magic and science go together. After all, science is about the laws of nature and truth, while with magic you have to suspend your beliefs. Yet science is often magical. Especially chemical reactions can create the same wonder and amazement of magic and wizardry. And one of the most entertaining chemical reactions is when you mix science, magic and birthday parties.

When you mix science and magic for a birthday party, you get great fun. You can bring Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince to life by using simple experiments as an activity. Although Harry is not a fan of potions class, your Wizard Academy "students" will be. With simple and safe ingredients that you find around your kitchen, you can make an age appropriate Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince Birthday party.
