Harry Potter Series is Phenomenal!

In this lens I will discuss what I thought of the Harry Potter books. I will not be comparing it to the movies per say, but I will refer to the movies at times as a frame of reference to show just how much detail the movies left out. J. K. Rowling was an instant literary success with her first Harry Potter novel; "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." I know, I don't have the bonafides to make that statement. I'm not a Harvard scholar when it comes to the classics, I don't quote Shakespeare during conversations, but I know phenomenal writing when I read it. And Rowling was just getting warmed up with her first novel.

As I progressed through each book I began to see a pattern arising too. Not that everyone else on the planet hadn't already seen it for the obvious elephant in the room it was but; in each proceeding book, the stakes were raised, and the actions of participants became more intense and violent at times, toward one another also. The way that Rowling wove the emotions in throughout the storyline is breath taking at times. Especially if you are a parent and are reading this series. Now you might be saying; "Joe, get a grip buddy, It's a book." But I will say to you that we live in a dangerous world, and I have an 18 year old son with aspirations to be a military officer. Having spent 10 years in the military, and one in combat in Iraq, I have a grip on reality, but I also "feel" Rowling's sense of getting it right with how Mrs. Weasley, Amos Diggory, and Narcissa react when they feel their children are in peril, or worse, killed; as was the case with Diggory's parents. And later still with Narcissa in book seven, but I won't go into detail because I do not wish to spoil it for those who have not yet read all the books... as if there should be anyone out there who has not.

Harry Potter is still numero uno!

'Potter' conjures up $159.7 million in 5 days

It is not surprising to me at all that Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince came out and kicked cinematic butt.

Of course, knowing what would happen at the end of HBP took some of the sting out of it. My thirteen year old daughter cried when Hermione was crying over Ron, and she cried at the end too. Of course she now hates Snape with all the passion only a thirteen year old girl who doesn't have all the information could hate. She is on book four and I refuse to tell her all there is to know about Snape's relationship/arrangement with Dumbledore. That's all I'm gonna say about that here to avoid any conflict of interest.

Lets be honest, there is much to dislike Snape for. He sincerely hates HP, and if you ask me, he has good cause. JP was an arrogant jerk... why should Snape not assume HP would turn out just like dear-ole-dad. Circumstances usually conspire to make HP appear guilty to Snape. So he doesn't need to give people any more reason to hate him. Of course, Alan Rickman does a superb job as Snape and totally sells his character. I must say too, that Snape has been my favorite HP character since the beginning. Not because he was a good guy obviously, but because he was so nonchalant in his verbal deliveries. He was always so non-plussed when questioned on a topic. Rickman/Snape was funny... Now, turn to page three-hundred-and-ninety-four.

What's in Potter's Cauldron?

Well, take a look-

As we all know, Harry wasn't that good at Alchemy, or as Rowling called it, Potions. Maybe it was because Professor Snape was his instructor, or maybe it was because harry just wasn't that good at it. I think Potter was a little sloppy when it came to Potions, and I also believe Snape made Potions a living hell for all Gryffindors, especially Longbottom, who was always a nervous wreck around Snape. But Harry hated Snape as much as Snape hated him. The only person Snape couldn't really rattle too much was Hermione. She was just too smart to get into that kind of confrontation with Snape too often, knowing just how biased he was. The problem in Potions classes for Harry was this; it was Snape's domain and he had the advantage in his own dungeons. At least, that is how I see it. Either way, check out what's in my newest lens!

"Dumbledore Said"

Have you any idea how much tyrants fear the people they oppress? All of them realize, that one day, amongst their many victims, there is sure to be one who rises against them and strikes back!

"I Say"

It may even be someone out side of that oppressors influence. Some... "Wretched" man who finally said enough is enough .

Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone

by: J. K. Rowling

The first novel that launched the career and the International smash series by this wife and mother who lives in Scotland. Her many awards include: an Anthony Award for Best Young Adult Mystery. The first four books in the series for Ms. Rowling were honored with the Hugo Award, the Bram Stoker Award, the White Bread Children's Book Award, the Nestle' Smarties Book Prize, among others. And oh did I forget to mention she has also been named an Officer of the order of the British Empire.

That must be code for the Order of the Phoenix.

Great Dumbledore quotes!

It does not do to dwell on dreams, Harry, and forget to live!

It takes a great deal of courage to stand up to your enemies, but a great deal more to stand up to your friends!

Harry Potter Blogs

From: Harry Potter's Blog

Now that all seven books are out and everyone has read them all by now.
What?
Everyone has not read the Harry Potter series? Am I even on the right planet? Of course I am joking about all that; everyone is not into the same thing. But for those who have read them all, or even some of them, there are some very thoughtful blogs out there and that makes for some fascinating reading too.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban

By: J. K. Rowling

In the third installment of the Harry Potter series you will see a ratcheting up of intensity as Harry, Hermione, and Ron, continue their wizarding education at Hogwarts, while a dangerous criminal (Sirius Black) has escaped from Azkaban.
This third book also introduces the duplicitous nature of Cornelius Fudge, the Minister of Magic. Fudge clears Harry for inflating Marge while he was at the Dursley's. But that was only to cover the Minister of Magic's butt. The Minister shows his true colors later on and in book four & five. (The Order of the Phoenix)

The three friends are joined at Hogwarts by the Dementors (a nasty wraith-like creature that is utterly without emotion); the Azkaban guards responsible for keeping the prisoners in the prison. They are after Sirius Black but have a strong and negative effect on Harry as well.

On a personal note; for me this book marked a real change in Harry as the Dementers seem to seek him out, he begins to find clues to his parents life at the time of their death, and Professor Snape's extreme dislike for him.

Timeless?

We'll see

After more than fifty years J. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, and "Lord of the Rings" trilogy is going as strong as ever to those who enjoy fantasy, or those who just enjoy great stories from great authors. The question is; will J. K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" series be as "long running" and loved?

My prediction:

JoeTedesco, at 11am on December 13, 2008 predicts:

I predict the Harry Potter series will become as timeless as the Lord of The Rings trilogy.

I wouldn't put her on the same level as Tolkien, however I do believe she can be considered our generation's version of Enid Blyton. And I agree with Joe above, the HP series does have the makings of a long-running classic.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

By; J. K. Rowling

Book four, in my opinion, marks a coming of age of sorts for Harry Potter. He got pretty good tastes of darkness and danger in the first three books, but GOF really brings it home for Harry. Rowling shows us what Harry is made of morally. She gives us a realsense of his integrity as, not only a human being, but as a wizard finding his way in an adult wizarding world. The last six chapters of GOF are some of the most gripping, difficult, heart wrenching, and frustrating chapters of the entire series. At least for me.

This book (GOF) sets the stage for the final three. Now you might say, well no kidding, but there is more to it then just one book leading to another. There is so much subtle information in book four that it is mind boggling.

This year at Hogwarts finds Harry as a contender in the Tri-Wizard Tournament, (even though he is too young; someone enters his name without his knowledge) an ancient contest between three Wizarding Schools of the wizarding world. We are also introduced to the Death Eaters, followers of Voldemort, who make a rather frightening appearance at the Quidditch World Cup.

Someone has produced the "Death Eaters Sign" (The Dark Mark) in the sky over the crowd as several Death Eaters are terrorizing some muggles that are helping out at the "World Cup."

Harry continues to find out that the wizarding world can be a dark and dangerous place. Those that smile at you are not always your friends.

Snape and Malfoy ratchet up their dislike for Potter as Harry gets himself into jams that require more clout than he possesses. But we also learn the depth of moral values that Harry possesses in multiple instances, not the least of which is a great sense of fairness and right and wrong when faced with life altering events.

There are many different distractions along the way for Harry as he tries to ready himself for each event of the Tri-Wizard Tournament.

Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix

By: J. K. Rowling

As far as I'm concerned, The Order of the Phoenix is the definitive book of the series, as we (finally) see the steel inside Harry Potter. Hermione has always had backbone as well as brains, and Ron is... well, Ron.

Hogwarts has a new Defense against the Darks Arts Professor by the name of Dolores Umbridge. She can only be described as an insidious, horrible person. Her little-girl laugh is so sickly sweet and nasty, just like her disposition. She maneuvers her way to the Headmasters position with the help of Cornelius Fudge and begins to make rather ugly changes within Hogwarts. Sort of like the Obama administration actually... oops, sorry; I hate when I do that.

When Umbridge makes it clear that she is not going to train the students against the Darks Arts, Hermione convinces Harry that he should train the students. Thus, Dumbledore's Army is formed.

If you have stalled in reading the series, you must continue on with "The Order of the Phoenix."

Things become very sticky in the sixth year!

Each year at Hogwarts is more dangerous and exciting than the preceding one for Harry, Ron, and Hermione. And this year is no different for the trio, but with even more unexpected happenstance; both good, and disasterous for Harry & Ron as they learn what it is to become full-grown wizards... and young men.

The True Hero is...?

You must have read ALL seven books to know this answer!

Those who have read all seven books know why I even ask this question... those who haven't are either scratching their collective heads or are seeking out friends and relatives who have read them all. Trust me, they can not do justice to reading it for yourself.

Who is the real hero of this entire tale?

Harry Potter finally opens his eyes!

If you read the book "Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix." Then you know that, where as Hermione is "The best in her year" and is the brains of the outfit; Ginny is a very powerful witch in her own right as Sjughorn himself attests to in the "Half-Blood Prince" when he invites her to his little dinner party on the Hogwarts express en route to the start of their sixth year, and he says something to the effect of: "Marvelous! Simply marvelous! That, my dear, is the very best Bat-Bogey Hex I've seen performed in decades."
