Harry Potter - The Magic Lives On
The seven-part Harry Potter series of fantasy novels was written by English author J. K. Rowling about an adolescent boy wizard named Harry Potter and his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. The story is mostly set at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, a school for young wizards and witches, and focuses on Harry Potter's fight against the evil wizard Lord Voldemort, who killed Harry's parents as part of his plan to take over the wizarding world.
Since the release of the first novel, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone (retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the United States) in 1997, the books have gained immense popularity, critical acclaim and commercial success worldwide, spawning films, video games and merchandise. As of April 2007, the first six books in the seven book series have sold more than 325 million copies and have been translated into more than 64 languages. The seventh and last book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, was released on 21 July 2007. Publishers announced a record-breaking 12 million copies for the first print run in the U.S. alone.
The success of the novels has made Rowling the highest-earning novelist in history. Watson, Julie and Kellner, Tomas. "J.K. Rowling And The Billion-Dollar Empire". Forbes.com, 26 February 2004. Accessed 19 March 2006. English language versions of the books are published by Bloomsbury in the United Kingdom, Scholastic Press in the United States, Allen & Unwin in Australia and Raincoast Books in Canada.
The first five books have been made into motion pictures by Warner Bros. The sixth, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince'', is set to begin filming in September 2007, and has a scheduled release of 21 November 2008.
Three reasons to love Harry Potter
I love harry potter
1. Harry Potter is the most exciting, entertaining and thrilling series ever written. Some parents have been disturbed by J.K. Rowling's magical themes, her portrayal of witchcraft and wizardry; but to me, the moral lessons in these books could not be more unequivocal. Harry and his friends are fundamentally decent kids, brave and true of heart, and the forces of good always triumph. Love turns away evil, meanness never pays, and courage and loyalty are rewarded. Of course, it doesn't hurt that Rowling's yarns are exquisitely paced, tightly plotted, and the characters are intriguingly drawn.
2. The series has a universal appeal, i.e, it appeals to all age groups. As a 14 year old I started reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. When Deathly Hallows came out, I was 21. The fascination with Rowling's universe never died. I have seen 7 year old kids to 55 year old grandmoms enjoying their favourite Harry Potter book. I have seen parents who got addicted to Potter's world through their kids. Need more proof?
3. Most memorable and lovable characters ever. Have you ever seen or heard of a book which had so many characters etched at the back of your hand. You know precisely how Hagrid would react if a lion came in front of him...or what Hermione would do if she saw you spoiling a book...or what Professor McGonagall would say if she came to know that I was bunking classes! Visit England, and follow the Harry Potter trail. Be it the Gloucester castle which doubled up as the Hogwarts School of Witchcrafty and Wizardry, or the moorland village of Goathland on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (Hogsmeade station!), one of Britain's many lovingly preserved steam lines, which have hardly changed since opening in 1865.

There are other railway links in the movie. In London, not only platforms 4 and 5 at King's Cross station but also the Waterloo and City line (an underground railway) were employed as backdrops to Chris Columbus's film.
The university city of Oxford also plays a key role. Its Bodleian Library - in real-life, the main research centre for students and scholars - doubles as Hogwarts Library, while scenes were also filmed at Christ Church College.
A different kind of atmosphere was conjured when the cameras moved back to London, to film characters visiting the reptile house in London Zoo, set on the edge of Regent's Park.
