New Era Caps

The New Era Cap Company, based in Buffalo, is the largest sports-licensed headwear company in the United States. The company is the premier cap provider for MLB, as well as a number of NBA and NHL franchises, plus a handful of major collegiate athletic programs. Its premier ballcap is known as the "59-Fifty", a structured, fitted, 100% polyester cap, which is worn by Major League Baseball players and umpires during competition.

Although New Era offers a range of "59-Fifty" caps, their most prominent and recognizable cap is modeled with a flat cap bill. This is the style most popular with urban consumers, who have adopted the style from its prominence in rap & hip-hop culture.

The most common and popular cap is the New York Yankees 59FIFTY Flat bill cap. Popularized by rap artists, athletes and other prominent cultural figures, the caps have become a staple of urban fashion. Conscious of the fashion status of the "59-Fifty", New Era has taken care to produce MLB team caps in a wide range of styles and a large assortment of colors, including popular colors that have no traditional team association. Also to drive this demand, New Era now releases designs and styles to correspond with the release of seasonal fashion lines.

Cap Styles

• Along with the 59Fifty, New Era produces the 49Forty, 39Thirty, and 29Twenty
  
• The 49Forty is a fitted, lower profile cousin to the 59Fifty, and has a more casual, collegiate look
  
• The 39Thirty is a strength fit cap, and is used by MLB as the batting practice cap. It is 62% polyester and 38% wool, and has a soft mesh feeling.

In early 2004 Cam'ron announced plans to work with scientists to develop a new color and patent it for his trademark use. This eventually manifested as a purplish color that he used to design a hat in conjunction with the baseball cap company New Era. His fitted features a black based, 100% Chromespun metallic fabric with strong metallic purple accents, which is in line with the theme of his forth album Purple Haze. But true to his flare for pink, Cam'ron's cap features a satin pink under visor and embroidery accents. The cap's front logo represents his label -- The Diplomats -- imaging; back embroidery is an Old English stylized "C," and his name is emblazoned on the right wear-side of the 59FIFTY.

"Fashion is my sport, and so working with New Era to design my own custom 59FIFTY fitted works for me," said Cam'ron. "People know that I am a leader in fashion trends, and that I only get down with the best. New Era has been around for a long time, and they have been making the 59FIFTY for 50 years, that's legitimate. The 59FIFTY is the best fitted."

I remember my first New Era Cap...a sleek navy blue ball cap with an alluring turquoise bill. It was the Seattle Mariners home cap from the early 90's. I bought the cap in '92 because it looked remarkable...and because of my man crush on Ken Griffey Jr. I've finally gotten over Griffey, but not New Era Caps. It was the team colors, the look & one player that originally attracted me to the Mariners New Era Cap, but it was the feel and the look that kept me coming back.
