Hatteras Island is part of the renowned Outer Banks or North Carolina. This long stretch of islands on the East Coast from Nags Head to Ocracoke is unique for both its beauty and its fascinating history. The 16th century, Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci set foot on the beaches of the Outer Banks and earned the honor of having a continent named after him. It was here that the English first tried (and failed) to establish a permanent colony in the New World. Pirates have called Ocracoke their home base, it is from these dunes that the Wright Brothers took flight, and in 1953, 72 miles of Outer Banks real estate was set aside as the nation's first National Seashore. Not surprisingly, the Outer Banks is sometimes called "The Land of Firsts".

Near the southern end of the Outer Banks in the middle of Pamilico Sound lies beautiful Hatteras Island and the town of Hatteras. Due to its warmer water and steady breezes this is a Mecca of kite boarders and wind surfers alike. Other excellent water activities in the area include boating, surfing, scuba diving, and sailing. The fishing is also among the finest on the East Coast!

For land lubbers, golfing is available and horseback riding on the beach is a visitor favorite. Tennis, biking, and hiking are also available for the active tourist, and for the more refined, there are theaters, museums, and art galleries to explore. There are also endless options for shopping and dining on the islands.
