Hauntings

Although my husband is from the Ypsilanti area of Michigan, I asked him if he has personally witnessed anything paranormal, and he said no. However he has a lot of friends who have shared their stories throughout the years.

Some of the more famous stories are the hauntings around the Denton Road area right outside of Ypsilanti. According to my husband there are a lot of Urban Legend Stories but more true to life stories would be of the ball of lights chasing people and burning a streak on the roof of a car. The story of the burn streak was actually in the newspaper that my husband read about.

There is also several haunted asylums in Michigan. The Mayberry Insane Asylum was a TB sanatorium back in the 1900's. There were thousands of people who had died there. Today it is a State Park, but it is still known to be very haunted.

The Mercywood Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan use to be a mental hospital before it was closed down. There were a lot of paranormal activities. You would hear sounds coming from the boiler room, the elevators would move when the building was empty. There were insane writing on the walls in the basement that is said was written by inmates. Behind the hospital there was a convent where the nuns lived that always spoke of uneasy feelings. It is as though you could feel the insanity that surrounded the place. My husband's friend use to work in the kitchen of this hospital and sometimes he would go to see him. As eerie as it may sound, my husband said that sometimes when he seen a few of the nuns walking down the hall, it appeared as if they were walking in the zone.

Let's take a little tour of haunted places in Michigan.

Crouch Murder

There is a legend in Jackson, Michigan that relates to a massive murder that took place back in 1883. They say that every November 21st, people try to gather at Reynolds Cemetery in hopes of seeing two lost join back together; a father and a daughter who were the victims of a horrible murder.

Here is a brief outline of what happened:

On the night of November 21, 1883 in a small community a horrible mass murder took place claiming the life of seven victims. This crime still remains a mystery and still remains unsolved.

Jacob Crouch, Eunice White Jacob's daughter, her unborn child and husband and a family friend named Moses had all been shot to death while they were sleeping. It is said that the crime was carried out during a storm to muffle the sound of the gun shots so they would not be heard from nearby homes.

A couple of months later Jacobs surviving daughter was found dead on her bedroom floor that looked like she had been force fed poison and Jacob's farm hand was found dead shortly afterwards.

In the years to follow several men were brought to trial for the crimes but no one was ever convicted and everyone who was involved in the case since had passed away. So the case remains a mystery and remains unsolved.

Jacob Crouch is buried in Reynolds Cemetery and his daughter Eunice is buried in a nearby cemetery about five miles apart. It is said that people have witnessed a mist cloud rising from Eunice's grave and traveling to Reynolds Cemetery where her father's grave is, then the mist disappears once it reaches Jacob's grave.

People still try to gather at Reynolds Cemetery with the hopes of seeing this event take place-but now the cemetery is being guarded by police and neighbors.

Apparitions are sort of spooky and can make you feel eerie for sure.
  • grannysage Sep 19, 2010 @ 1:18 pm | delete
I was very interested in the Paulding ghost light when I first encountered it since it is in my native UP of Michigan. We watched the videos very carefully. There is a natural explanation. What they are seeing are headlights and taillights of cars on a Hwy several miles away. The way the trees are aligned makes it appear that they are coming toward you. You can find this info by googling Paulding light debunked. I have a feeling the cemetery one has a similar explanation. And I was really frustrated with the story of a "practicing witch" who died and now haunts the cemetery. Oh please.
Not that I am not open to spirits that stay around places. I just think that it is rare and that people like to believe something is paranormal and scare themselves.
Interesting stuff to talk and think about but scary, not.
