I nearly went to Ohio University, in Athens, Ohio. Definitely a very haunted town!

Now, in Indianapolis, I live just outside of Irvington, which is known as the most haunted small town in America. I'm not really too sure about that.

    Blessed by an angel!

We have some "haunted" sites in my hometown. My son has a website http://www.enidbuzz.com about the town and I do most of the data building and enjoyed researching the hauntings.

The Pinewoods Cemetery is minutes from my home - it has been closed to the public and has been noted as one of the most haunted Cemeteries in the US. It has also been known as "The Gateway To Hell". I heard that there are 7 Gateways to Hell and one is here - just a few minutes away. This cemetery is also referenced on another lens here on Squidoo somewhere, I have seen it a while back. - You may have fun looking up this one. (The radio station tried to get someone to go there a few halloween's ago, and the cops were there to make sure they did not enter ...) Really a scary lookin place, even in the daytime (I have never gone in, but have stopped at the road and looked in...years ago)
  • WhiteOak50 Oct 24, 2010 @ 4:20 pm | delete
Oh, my goodness, I will check into it.

    Hi,

I must be doing it wrong again. Here I hunt for haunted houses to find ghosts, I should be going to haunted cemeteries. What great info, and congratulations on the purple star.

Cemeteries are always spooky places at night. -
  • WhiteOak50 Sep 17, 2010 @ 6:26 pm | delete
I think they are very mysterious and can be a little eerie. Thanks for visiting!
  • drifter0658 Sep 16, 2010 @ 7:59 pm | delete
Not only is Athens a very haunted area, but that region of the state is supposed to be one of the paranormal hot spots in the world. There is a suspected portal nearby, accounting for all types of sightings. Not all that far away is Point Pleasant West Virginia, home of the legendary Mothman.

Loved this lens, and I can't wait either. Every year, I am asked to create and host a scavenger hunt for an adult Halloween party, and every year, I include a cemetery ;)

Eva, you are a real doll...thank you for nominating Gremlin Bells!
  • WhiteOak50 Sep 17, 2010 @ 6:52 am | delete
Thanks for visiting Alex! I bet you are going to have fun at the scavenger hunt!!!
  • kiwisoutback Sep 15, 2010 @ 8:10 pm | delete
It seems like these are mostly in the midwest and down south. I've never read anything about haunted graveyards, but that mysterious gas they give off makes them especially eerie this time of year.
  • WhiteOak50 Sep 16, 2010 @ 6:40 am | delete
Mysterious gas they give off? That is interesting Kiwis!!
  • WeddingZazzle Sep 10, 2010 @ 4:45 pm | delete

I muist admit to having a bit of a "thing" for cemeteries too! We've got lots of very old and very creepy ones here in the UK but I'd love to have a look around all of these - especially the New Orleans one - I've been interested in Marie Laveau for quite some time! Blessed by a Squid Angel :)
  • Sylvestermouse Aug 25, 2010 @ 11:45 am | delete
We have taken a few cemetery tours. I have nothing quite so frightening or intriguing to report, but we did have an interesting experience with a photo from one cemetery. I took a picture of my son inside one of the above ground crypts in Scotland. It looked great on the screen of the camera. When we got back to the states and uploaded the picture to the computer, it was all pixelated, but the really weird thing is that even after all of those pictures were deleted from the card and more photos were taken, that picture shows up again in the new group of photos. It simply will not delete from the card, even though the card shows empty.
  • WhiteOak50 Aug 25, 2010 @ 12:53 pm | delete
umm. I would say that experiene is very intriguing and paranormal. Do you still have the picture by chance?
  • Sylvestermouse Sep 19, 2010 @ 8:49 pm | delete
Yes, I do still have the photo and yes I do still have the photo card that will not delete the photo :)

I live near the Gateway to Hell (Forest Park Cemetery, Brunswick NY). It was listed in Life Magazine in 1980 as one of the top 10 haunted places in the US.
  • WhiteOak50 Aug 5, 2010 @ 11:41 am | delete
Oh, my goodness-perhaps I need to research that cemetery. Did you witness any paranormal there?
  • kab Aug 5, 2010 @ 1:46 pm | delete
I've never been inside. It's been closed off for years. From what I've heard there are headless statues in there, and that it is super creepy.
  • Jun 29, 2010 @ 4:47 pm | delete
I always wondered why a ghost would want to hang out in the cemetery... Love you lens, WhiteOak, I've lensrolled it to mine on ghosts, thanks!

Scary stories are getting me more in the mood for Halloween. It's even spookier because you've personally experienced it.

I'm English (and live in England) but for 2 months I lived in Athens, Ohio and someone took me to the assylum and cemetary late at night. I didn't see anything- possibly because I had my eyes closed and was begging my friend to take me home again!! Someone told me at the time that OU had taken over some of the building and was planning to use it for classrooms or was using it for classrooms- I'm not quite sure. Crazy.
There's one horrible story about a deaf mute lady who they forgot about and bricked up the door to her cell- apparently the reopened room has stains that they can't get rid of.

This is way cool! If you'd like to see some spooky camping photos my husband took, feel free http://picasaweb.google.com/ezines1/SewemupMesaOctober2007?feat=directlink
There are photos of his campfire doing strange things that only appeared in the camera lens, not to the naked eye.
  • andreaberrios Aug 7, 2009 @ 6:43 pm | delete
Super cool! I love everything about the paranormal and haunted places. This lens is excellent 5*
  • lakeerieartists Aug 7, 2009 @ 6:35 pm | delete
What a great topic! I find comfort visiting the cemetary where my relatives are buried, maybe it is haunted in a good way. Blessings.
