Alice Flagg

by SkyeWolfe

More than 150 years ago, 16-year-old Alice Flagg and her widowed mother moved into her wealthy brother's home in Murrells Inlet, in coastal South Carolina. Despite her family's disapproval, she fell in love and became engaged to a young merchant. When her family forbade her to see him, she secretly wore her engagement ring on a ribbon around her neck, concealing it beneath the collar of her dress.

Soon after, Alice was sent to Charleston to attend school, but she never forgot her true love and often pressed her hand to her chest to make sure her ring was still there. When Alice became sick with malarial fever, her brother rushed by carriage to bring her home. Back at Murrells Inlet and drifting in and out of consciousness, Alice reached for her ring, and found it was gone. She weakly cried out, "Give me my ring. I want my ring." She died the next morning.

For more than 150 years, Alice has been seen roaming the halls and grounds of her home, the Hermitage, at Murrells Inlet, presumably in search of her ring. To this day, observers also say they've seen a young lady in a lovely white flowing dress walking beneath the live oak trees in the cemetery at All Saints Waccamaw Episcopal Church where Alice was buried. And whenever she is seen, she is always searching for something while holding her hand over her chest. It is believed that she comes back to search for her lost engagement ring.

Investigation Gear

Here is the quick list of what I not only what I recommend, but what I use as well.

I - Sight Personal Illuminator Green (dark vision preserving) LED

This little guy clips to your ear, just like a hands free device for a mobile phone. I was very skeptical of this little guy, until I used it. It delivers just the right amount to see by without messing up your natural night vision.

'GIANT Light - Small Package' Flashlight - 21 LED! Gunmetal Silver

The description of this thing DOES NOT LIE, it will shine like the damned sun. I use it for those times that I need a LOT of light very quickly. Most of the time I rely on my I-Sight clip on, but in some places where the footing isn't as stable as I'd like, or there is debris littering the place, this guy makes sure I see what i need to.

Extech 480823 Electromagnetic Field and Extremely Low Frequency Meter

I actually use several EMF readers, but I like this one the best. The theory is, that when a spirit has manifested or is trying to, that it causes disturbances in the electro-magnetic field. This little puppy measures that field. I will warn you thusly, unshielded wiring, junction boxes, microwaves and many more things will cause a harsh spike in the EMF. Too much of a constant spike in an area, can cause feelings of dread and/or paranoia and even nausea after prolonged exposure.

Actron CP7875 PocketTherm Infrared Thermometer

One of the best on the market in my opinion. Not too expensive and not too cheap. I also have a little pocket thermometer that I use as backup, but this one works VERY well.

Good, crisp, clear sound. I love this thing. Not only helpful for investigations, but spot on for notes and reminders.

Evil in the Attic

Grandma's Doll

submitted by Alex

My great-grandmother gave me one of those glass Victorian dolls for Christmas when I was little. The ones with the long curly blonde hair, the nice dresses, and play beautiful music and kind of sway?

Well, I loved the doll. My great grandma soon died afterwards of breast cancer, which is hereditary in my family.

I always played the doll, watching it as it swayed to the music. But soon, at random times of the day, it would randomly start to play and sway to the music. I thought that maybe I had wound it up to much. But soon, I never even touched the doll, and it would play.

I was young, naive. I thought my grandma was talking to me, so I always waited for it to play.

But recently now, it's started to play again. I'm older now, and I've heard ghost stories. I never touch the doll, and haven't wound it up for probably 6 years. It does it less frequent, but it plays sometimes. I tell my friends about it, and they think it's the weirdest thing. My mother didn't believe me, until once or twice she heard the doll play, and knows that I never touch it.

I'll never get rid of the doll, and I probably won't touch it or move it until I leave for college, or move out of the house.

Investigation Gear

"If you don't have hard evidence, it didn't happen" This has always been my personal motto. Yes, you have read about some of my encounters, but does that make you believe them to be anything other than imaginative stories? The answer is a resounding "NO!" Get pictures, get video, get EVP, get readings with witnesses and personal experiences all documented on camera, audio, video, and make sure to have a witness. That is why paranormal investigators always work in pairs.

The Grey Man

a South Carolina Classic

Perhaps the most frequently told ghost story in Georgetown County is that of the Grey Man.
According to numerous documented accounts, he appears on the beach at Pawleys Island prior to hurricanes. According to one legend, a young woman was walking the windswept, lonely beach not far from her parent's Pawleys Island home. She was in mourning for her childhood sweetheart who had recently died in a tragic accident on the island. Her love had returned to Georgetown by ship after an absence of several months. He was so eager to see his beloved fiancee that, rather than wasting one more precious moment away from her, he took a shortcut across previously untraveled marshland.
With his faithful manservant riding a short distance behind, the eager fellow and his horse came to a sudden stop and began to sink rapidly into a patch of deadly quicksand. His manservant watched in horror, unable to help his young master, as the young man and his horse disappeared into the mire. When the young woman heard of her finance's tragic death, she was heartbroken. After the funeral, she took to walking the stretch of beach where she and her beau used to stroll in happier times. This particular day was windier than most, but it suited her recent mood. She was alone with her sadness in the whipping wind, with the ocean crashing by her side. Suddenly, a figure appeared ahead. As she walked closer, the young woman could have sworn it was her finance. With no fear, she walked toward him. "Leave the island at once," he said. "You are in danger. Leave the island!" Then he disappeared. The young lady hurried home to tell her father and mother about the strange, unsettling experience. Upon hearing their daughter's strange story, her parents immediately began making plans to leave Pawleys Island for their inland home. They did not know what danger they were fleeing, but they did know that their daughter was a sensible person and not prone to flights of fancy. The family left Pawleys Island before dawn the following morning. That night, as they lay sleeping in the safety of their inland home, a fierce hurricane ravaged Pawleys Island. The hurricane destroyed most of the homes on Pawleys Island, but the home of the young woman's family was undamaged.
