Halloween History
Halloween (or Hallowe'en) is thought to have originated as the Celtic harvest festival of Samhain celebrated by the Gaels in the British isles. Samhain comes from Old Irish and means "summer's end." Samhain was the traditional time for slaughter, for preparing stores of meat and grain to last through the coming winter. The slaughter of cattle to storing during the winter may be one reason Samhain developed a bloody reputation. Halloween is also associated with the ancient Roman festival of the dead called ParentaliaHalloween has come to be associated with divination, the occult and the dead as well as witches, paganism and demons, which is part of the reason Halloween is often bypassed by some people of the Christian faith.
Halloween Costumes
Halloween is closely associated with Halloween costumes. The custom of dressing up in costumes and begging door to door for treats on holidays dates back to the Middle Ages and includes Christmas wassailing. According to "Halloween: From Pagan Ritual to Party Night" by Nicholas Rogers, "the custom of dressing up in costumes and going "guising" or trick-or-treating at Halloween developed from Christian customs created in Western Europea around the 15th century."In the US dressing up in costumes was traditionally for children. However, in recent decades, more and more adults enjoy Halloween parties with costumes and decorations. Halloween costumes are now worn around the world to celebrate Halloween.
