Have a Happy Halloween!

Have a Safe & Happy Halloween!

Halloween's origins are controversial and shrouded in some mystery, but no one can deny that the holiday has become one of America's most popular holidays in recent years. Although its roots are considered to be satanic by some, Halloween is now known for activities including trick-or-treating, costume parties, jack-o'-lanterns, Halloween decorations, bonfires, haunted houses, scary stories and horror movies.

This Halloween lens will be a smorgasbord of information about the October holiday - a little history, a little poetry, some articles and photos all designed to help you have a happy Halloween!

Halloween History

Jack 'o LanternHalloween (or Hallowe'en) is thought to have originated as the Celtic harvest festival of Samhain celebrated by the Gaels in the British isles. Samhain comes from Old Irish and means "summer's end." Samhain was the traditional time for slaughter, for preparing stores of meat and grain to last through the coming winter. The slaughter of cattle to storing during the winter may be one reason Samhain developed a bloody reputation. Halloween is also associated with the ancient Roman festival of the dead called Parentalia

Halloween has come to be associated with divination, the occult and the dead as well as witches, paganism and demons, which is part of the reason Halloween is often bypassed by some people of the Christian faith.

Halloween Costumes

Halloween is closely associated with Halloween costumes. The custom of dressing up in costumes and begging door to door for treats on holidays dates back to the Middle Ages and includes Christmas wassailing. According to "Halloween: From Pagan Ritual to Party Night" by Nicholas Rogers, "the custom of dressing up in costumes and going "guising" or trick-or-treating at Halloween developed from Christian customs created in Western Europea around the 15th century."

In the US dressing up in costumes was traditionally for children. However, in recent decades, more and more adults enjoy Halloween parties with costumes and decorations. Halloween costumes are now worn around the world to celebrate Halloween.

Some of these displays take on a life of their own as collectors add miniature furnishings, accessories and decorations, creating entire intricate dioramas around a holiday theme.
