Haviland Porcelain

Ranked #20,169 in Hobbies, Games & Toys, #350,027 overall

The American/French Connection

The Haviland Company was established by David Haviland in Limoges, France in the 1840's. He helped implement new methods of decorating china in the 1870's. Limoges is known for the fine porcelain made from local deposits of kaolin, and required ingredient for hard paste porcelain. There are so many patterns of Haviland china that a numbers scheme was devised by Arlene Schleiger in the 1930's, and her original work went to six volumes with approximately 4000 examples. Schleiger number are still used today to identify specific patterns of Haviland Limoges porcelain.

Collecting porcelain does not necessarily mean the Chinese porcelain made hundreds of years ago. Current porcelain items are well worth collecting, and are far more accessible.

Stoke-on-Trent

Pottery and China Center of England

Minton is one of the many pottery and china makers located in Stoke-on-Trent. In fact the area around Stoke-on-Trent is known as "The Potteries" for the number of such companies that have or do exist in the area. Considerable consolidation occurred during the late Twentieth Century, and conglomerate china companies were formed to try and keep English china competitive with imported china. Most of the remaining potteries have visitor centers and factory tours, as well as the area having museums of china by companies no longer working. For the porcelain and china lover, Stoke-on-Trent is a must-see when in England.
