Having a Baby Girl

If there is one thing you do when trying to decide on a name for your baby girl, it should be not to ask other people's opinion. Why? Because you might get your heart set on a name and suggest it and well meaning friends and family will tell you how much they don't like it, or how it will mean this or get shortened to that.

It's a mystery as to why people love to give their opinion about baby names but the only person who has to like it is you and your partner. It would be great if your little girl likes her name too but there are no guarantees that when she's growing up she won't wish for another name...but then again, who hasn't wished that at least once in their life?

There is much debate about whether or not you can increase your chances of conceiving a girl. There are various diet suggestions that are passed around as well as timing of conception. Can these things really increase your chances though?

I know many moms of baby girls who get a little worried about all the pretty in pink princess type furnishing, toys, apparel and so on that fills isles and isles of shop floors. There seems to be a measure of concern that the likes of pink dresses, Barbie and all those cutesy toys we all played with as little girls, will impact negatively as our little girls grow up.

Granted, there are some very strong sterotypes going on with many dolls for girls these days but are they as harmful as we all think? It's probably not that much different to the concern that mothers of boys have to about toys that mimic war games, fighting and anything remotely connected to violence.

At the end of the day, if little girls love pink and Barbie dolls then so it will be; all we can do as parents is encourage our children to be themselves and embrace all that is unique about them.
