Having Fun while Decorating your Child’s Bedroom

Ranked #60,867 in Home & Garden, #998,730 overall

As you are deciding how to update your child's bedroom, remember that this is a project that can be fun. Think back to when you were a child, and try to recall the things that you would have loved in your room. Whether it was a fairy castle or a hobbit cave, you can create this world for your children as you layout a new design for their bedroom.

As you are deciding what kind of design to use in your child's room, you may want to start with a single wall. Since there are so many choices of wall art that you can use to bring a wall to life, you may want to start with one wall for inspiration and then let your imagination go from there. With all of the metal wall sculptures, framed prints, paintings, murals, wallpapers and appliques available today, you will easily be able to find something to suit your child's bedroom.

Now it is time to have fun with your child.

1. Let Your Child Help - The first thing that you want to do is to bring your child in on the decorating plans. Not only will they be thrilled to help, but they will also really own the room if they are instrumental in creating it. A little ownership may help keep the room picked up in the coming months, and you will have fun working together in the meantime.

2. Pick a Theme - The next thing that you want to do is choose a theme that your child will enjoy for a while. Their job is to pick the theme, your job is to make sure that it has some staying power. You may want to go with a pretty generic theme like dinosaurs, firefighters, cowboys, princesses, mermaids or fairies, or they may have a favorite movie or story that you can use for a theme. Use wall art and decor to underscore the theme: Frogs and castles for a princess or tropical fish wall decor for a boy's underwater theme.

3. Favorite Things - As you are carrying out your design, make sure that you include personal elements of your child in the design. For example if they love sports you may want to have a sports inspired piece of wall art hanging on their wall regardless of the overall theme of the room.

4. Personal Elements - While it is great to use a theme for inspiration in your room, you want to make sure that you have some very personal elements included in your child's room as well. Hang family pictures and pictures of friends for them to enjoy, and you may also want to leave a space for to display your child's own artwork.

5. Safety First - As you are selecting the decor for your child's room, make sure that it is age appropriate and safe. You may find a beautiful piece of metal artwork that perfectly depicts their favorite hobby or sport, but if it is too big, heavy or has sharp edges, you may want to opt for another selection.
Decorating a child's bedroom can be a lot of fun, especially when you include them in the process as you select their furniture, accessories and wall art. As you and your child create the perfect bedroom space for a child, you are creating something else at the same time, which is even more important than their bedroom. You are creating a wonderful memory of time spent together creating their room, and that will stay with them long after they have outgrown their cool, new bedroom.
