4. Pearl Harbor

December 7, 1941 "a date which will live in infamy". When I visited Oahu, I asked the cab driver what is the best place he recommended tourists to visit. The first place he mentioned was Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor is a must to experience United States history and be reminded of World War II. Pearl Harbor is a naval base that was invaded by the Japanese leading to the United States becoming involved in the World War. This invasion led to 2,402 casualties and 1,282 wounded in the United States. You can see the USS Arizona Memorial, Battleship Missouri Memorial, USS Bowfin Submarine Museum & Park, USS Oklahoma Memorial, Pacific Aviation Museum

If you do visit Pearl Harbor, a visit to the USS Arizona is a definite must. Tours are run nearly every day and it is often one of the most thought provoking experiences of those visiting the area. The tour starts with a short documentary film that includes actual footage of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor at the start of World War II. Tourists are then taken by boat out to the center of Pearl Harbor to the memorial site which floats directly overhead of the USS Arizona, a ship where 1,200 United States servicemen perished. Most people learn about the attack on Pearl Harbor in grade school, but seeing the site first hand lets them understand it on a completely different level.

This tour was created by Mattehw Gray, a former professional chef and one of the top experts in Hawaii. His three different tours will have you salivating. The Hawaiian Feast tour will have you going to sophisticated restaurants to sample multiple courses. IN the hole-in-the-wall tour you will sample meals suggested by top Hawaiian chefs on their day off. ON the Gourmet Trilogy Tour, you'll combine food and wine at top 3 Honolulu restaurants. Those who have gone through this tour really experience positive reviews. Along the way they will also give you pointers on other Hawaii highlights and culture. Try it and you'll be glad you did.

6. Hawaii Tropical Farms

Sells a variety of different macadamia nut flavors from onion to garlic to honey roasted. YOu can have some free samples. They also sell different sauces. The bus tour costs $15, and it lasts about 1 hour. You will have a very knowledegeable tour guide along the way. It goes over different fruit groves such as pineapple, guavas and macademias. You then go to an amphitheater to see the different ways coconut is used for food, and a little demonstration on how fire is made from sticks. After this amphitheater demo, you go on a little boat ride and listen to some history of the area. Some movies and TV showshave been filmed here including "Giligan's Island", "Tears of the Sun", and some episodes of "Lost". Many have described this as a wonderful experience and one of the less known but popular attractions to try.

7. Diamond Head

One of the most popular places to hike is Diamond Head. IT is a famous volcanic crater near Waikiki. After you go through steep paths and stairs over a distance of 0.75 miles, you will encounter a magnificent 360 degree view from the top.

Located right near Honolulu, Diamond Head is the dominant physical feature on the island of Oahu. This is one of the more popular attractions for people visiting Honolulu, and with good reason too. Though the hike to the top can be daunting to some people, the views offered by Diamond Head are absolutely incredible. The trails are well kept and marked in a way that makes them easy to follow. No vacationer going to Honolulu should head home without more than a few pictures taken of this wonderful natural landmark, and photos taken from the mountain are even better.

A note of warning: it gets very hot so make sure you go early, put on some super-sunscreen and take lots and lots of water. It will take you about 45 minutes to go to the top, but you will be well rewarded with amazing views.

Fee $1 per person, $5 per car

8. Hanauma Bay

This is a common attraction for many visitors to Hawaii. It is a marvelous place for first time snorklers to try to swim with the fishes. You can see beautiful tropical fish and sea turtles as well. Make sure you go there very early or very late so it will not only be less crowded but you won't burn under the searing heat of the sun. Remember to put on a thick layer of sunscreen. You will have to watch a 15 minute video presentation prior to entering Hanauma Bay. It is basically a video that tells you not to step on to corals or feed the fish. Personally having gone to this attraction, I did not like it that the water was a bit cloudy and not as clear as I imagined. For a better experience I suggest you go snorkeling at the more smaller places, such as Kuilima Cove or Kahe Point Beach Park.

Experience Honolulu's immigrant neighborhood of Chinatown. Chinese laborers came to work here in the pineapple and sugar planationgs in the 1850's. Many different cultures come together here from Chinese, Hawaiian, Japanese, Thai, Filipino, Korean and more. It is a true Asian melting pot here. There is much variety from jewelry to food and arts. You may see occasional people playing a casual game of mah-jongg. In the Chinatown Walking Tour you will go through the Chinatown Cultural Plaza, Oahu marketplace, Kuan Yin Buddhist Temple.

You can take the Pineapple Express tour, a 20 minute informational narration into what else..pineapples! You can alos take a walking tour to see different tropical plants. There is a Garden Maze comprised of different plant species, which is called the largest maze by Guiness Book of World Records. 11. Waikiki Beach

Sometimes overcrowded and sometimes overwhelming, Waikiki Beach is also always over the top when it comes to providing a good time to the vacationers that go there. This is the ultimate Hawaiian beach that is pictured on postcards, in brochures, and on travel websites everywhere. The long white sands and the gentle sloping shoreline make it popular with beach combers, sunbathers, children, swimmers, surfers, and those riding personal watercraft. It is difficult to say you've been to Hawaii if you haven't at least visited Waikiki Beach once. It is also a wonderful place to take part in the interesting past time of people watching.

12. Ala Moana Beach Park

While nearby Waikiki Beach is the most famous and popular beach in all of Hawaii, Ala Moana Beach Park may be the nicest beach in the Honolulu area. The beach at Ala Moana Beach Park is perfect for both serious swimmers and those that are uncomfortable in the water. This is the perfect beach for families with small children. One of the nicest things about this beach is the fact that it is often overlooked by travelers who flock to the more widely known beaches, leaving those that venture here to be able to enjoy their time a little bit more. The park has a jogging trail, showers and changing rooms, and is conveniently located very near to a popular food court.

Oahu tips for travelers

Super Ferry - One of the best tips I got from a native is that I can give you is that if you want to visit the other islands on the cheap, you can ride the Hawaii super ferry. The best part about this is that the superferry lets you take your car so you can drive to wherever you want on any other island. So next time save your money on plane tickets and use this service instead! This superferry accommodates 800+ passengers on board. It has many amenities such as: reclining sofas, live television, restaurants, a kids area complete with arcade. It costs about $50 per person and $65 per vehicle. There are always specials so you should visit their website. IT takes about about 3.5 hours to go from Oahu to Maui.

Haggle!
If you are in the market place areas, don't be afraid to haggle! Make sure you have cash and make a good offer and you may get what you want. The more you buy, the better your bargaining power. If you plan to buy several items, first haggle on the first item, when you get the best price, you may be able to lower it by adding other items.

Go to a farm
If you are driving along the North Shore, stop by some farms on the way. You may be able to get a pineapple, coconut, guavas, or macadamia nuts along the way. This is a great experience for toddlers. Looking back into my childhood, I can clearly recall, the man who climbed a coconut tree, opened it with his machete and offered it to my family to drink. It's one of the most vivid memories I had. Let your kids experience the same.

Sunscreen
Sunscreen my friend - Don't get sunburn. Make sure you purchase appropriate sunblock.

Shopping

International Marketplace - One of the better places to shop for souveniers is the international marketplace. It has a great variety of items that represent Hawaii. I purchased some shirts and keychains for friends and family.

Aloha Stadium / Swap meet - If you are very "coupon like frugal", then try purchasing souveniers in this swap meet. You can find all you need here for half the price. There are over 700 vendors and it's a great place to get all you need.
