Hawaii Weather All Year Round; Summer, Spring, Fall, and Winter

Hawaii Weather Overview

So, you are planning a trip to Hawaii, you are going to spend thousands of dollars, and you don't want to be stuck in your hotel room the whole trip like some bad movie, right?

Well, the really good news is that Hawaii rarely has stormy events that cover all of any of the islands. The weather is generally warm and wonderful, even in winter, and usually, sunshine is either behind the next cloud, or just a short drive away.

Just so you won't be unprepared though, let's talk about Hawaii weather all year round.

In Hawaii, there generally is only a summer and a winter. The summer is typically a few degrees warmer than winter, with a bit less rain. Winter is also when there are big waves on the north shore. The ocean is warm all year round (about 72 degrees).

Hawaii Weather in June

One of the most popular months to visit Hawaii

a beautiful at Ala Moana, near Waikiki, on OahuOk, let's talk extensively about June, as this is when many people decide to visit. I'll also cover some basics about where the sunniest weather is year-round.

June is a really good time for a Hawaii vacation, if you want to go just before school gets out and save money before high tourism hits. Hawaii weather in June also makes this a great time for Hawaii travel.

What I like about June's weather is you get a little less rain on the windward (east and northeast) side of the islands. The windward side is the green and lush side, and most tourism focuses on the almost perpetually sunny west and south shores.

However, the windward side of each of the main islands has lots to see and do. For example, on Maui, there's the Hana Highway. On Oahu, there are really pretty beaches and gardens. On Kauai, there's the Coconut Coast and Wailua River. On the Big Island, my former home, there are awesome gardens, Akaka and Rainbow Falls, geothermal hot ponds and black sand beaches (and much less vog then in Kona).

June (as well as July) typically gets less rain throughout Hawaii than any of the other months. As an example: the United States' wettest city, Hilo on the Big Island, averages less than half the rain in June (7 inches) than it gets in November (16 inches).

So these are some good reasons to travel in June if you want to visit the windward side.

June and July are Hawaii's driest months. You'll still see lots of green tropical lushness on the windward sides though - you just won't be as likely to get drenched or have to change driving plans due to flash flooding. And on the leeward side, you're almost guaranteed sunny and dry days at the beach.

Hawaii's hurricane season does begin in June, and it runs through November; however hurricanes are rare In Hawaii. The last hurricane was Hurricane Iniki in 1992, and it was a pretty bad one. Kauai is at the highest risk for hurricane's due to its location way up at the northern end of the island chain.

If I were visiting any of the other islands though: Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, Molokai or Lanai, and I wanted the sunniest, best Hawaii weather possible, June would be an excellent choice.

Maui Weather All Year Round

maui beachSo you are planning a trip to Maui and you want to know what the weather will be like? Let me tell you right now, that it will be beautiful, and awesome!

Sure, we occassionally get some storms and some rain, but the weather in Maui, 95% of the time is simply spectacular, and chances are, for most of your vacation, it will be really nice.

Generally, if you are staying anywhere on the West Coast of Maui, like Wailea, Kihei, Kaanapali, or Lahaina, this is the drier, warmer side. It has to do with the way the winds come in off the ocean from the other side of the island and then dump all their rain on the mountains in the middle, so there is nothing left for the west side.

For example, last year, Kihei got only 13 inches of rain all year. The wettest month was January with 3.3 inches, and June, July, and September all had only .1 inch. That's not much rain.

The temperature is generally between 70 degrees and 90 degrees all year round, so you will be warm enough to swim even in December. The ocean temperature stays about 72 to about 74 fegrees F all year round too.

Winter Weather in Hawaii

December, January, and February

type=textNow, officially, winter in Hawaii would probably be November through March or April, since in Hawaii there is really only winter and summer, but for the case of this breakdown we will talk about the seasons like they are on the mainland united states - maybe it will be easier to understand.

So lets talk numbers here - all data compiled and figured from worldclimate.com.

So, in December, January, and February, in Honolulu, Oahu, (which would be similar to the temps in Poipu, Kauai; Wailea Maui; and Kau or South Point on the big island) the average 24 hour temperature is 75.5 degrees F and the average highest temperature is 81 degrees F.

The average rainfall in these three months is 3.5 inches. Warm and dry, yes?

These numbers will also be similar for the west sides of the islands, like Kailua-Kona and Puako, Big island; Lahaina and Kaanapali, Maui; and Ewa Beach, Ko Olina, or Makaha and Waianae, Oahu - except the rainfall could be even less on the west sides.

Now we'll look at Hilo - hilo is the rainiest city in Hawaii, so even though these numbers may be similar to Kailua and Lanikai Oahu and Kapaa, Kauai, they really won't be as rainy as Hilo. Hilo avg rainfall in these months is 12.2 inches and avg max temperature is 80.2 degrees F.

Vacationed in Hawaii in late February of 1989 on the North Shore of Oahu. There were a few brief showers one day while sitting on the beach at Waimea Bay, but it didn't make any difference to us in swimsuits - we were already wet from swimming! :). Coming from our home in Missouri, swimming in February in 75 degrees in Hawaii, while our home neighborhood was covered with snow, was unbelievable! A few raindrops meant nothing!
