What's Best for Traveling Between the Hawaiian Islands?

Hawaiian Airlines or Go! Airlines?

So, since there's only two major options of airlines to fly between the Hawaiian Islands, which inter-island airline should you choose?

I pick Hawaiian Airlines, and this lens will explain why.

Why I Like Hawaiian Airlines

  • Hawaiian Airlines has been in Hawaii, doing inter-island flights, since 1929. That's a long time.

  • Hawaiian's website is always functional and is easy to use.

  • Besides flying between Oahu, Maui, the Big Island, Kauai, Lanai, and Molokai, Hawaiian provides flights from the west coast. They also partner with many U.S. mainland carriers on the mainland, making it easy for you to fly to and around Hawaii entirely on miles, if you have the miles.

  • Hawaiian's service is top-notch. Over 14 years of flying with them I never had to wait for a flight and they never lost my luggage. Not once.

  • Hawaiian Airlines survived the price wars when Go! came on the scene. Go! Airlines is a newcomer to Hawaii - they actually started flying in 2006, and started with prices so low that the other inter-island carrier, Aloha Airlines, went out of business. The super-low prices did not stick around after Aloha was gone.

  • If you check the website daily, sometimes you can find super-low prices. My friend found a one way for $35 from the Big Island to Oahu.

Which Airline is Most Convenient

go airplaneI never had any major problems with Go! airlines either, but they just weren't around long enough for me to form any major opinions of them.

I like to say, that you should just pick the airline that has the most convenient times for you.

Both airlines are very similar in price, flight times, and operations.

If you don't have the time or the desire to compare both airlines, then just pick Hawaiian and be done with it. If Hawaiian is sold out or you really want to finesse your prices and options, then check them both, and don't feel scared about booking with Go!

Hawaiian Airlines

veryirie says:

It used to be Aloha Airlines, but once Go Airlines literally forced Aloha under, it's now Hawaiian. The airfare just 5 years ago could be as little as $19 to $35 one way between Oahu and Maui......now the airfare costs an average $170 to $180 round trip. And that's leaving on the 5:30 am flight. :( Very disappointing for the people who live here year round and travel interisland frequently to see family members.

Hawaiian appears by far the most reliable

Other Options for Inter-Island Travel

dolphinsBesides Go! and Hawaiian, there is also Mokulele airlines, which is now part of Go!.

There's also some commuter airlines; Pacific Wings and Island Air.

There's also a ferry from Maui to Molokai and a ferry from Maui to Lanai.

Hawaiian Airlines is one of the cleanest and best organized airline I've found so far.

Sounds like Hawaiian Airlines remembers what a lot of major airlines have forgotten these days. Used to be, taking an airplane ride was a big deal and they actually acted like they appreciated the business. If I ever take a trip to Hawaii, I'll check them out.

I've flown to Hawaii twice but never actually within Hawaii. This lens should be helpful for those who do need to travel between the islands.
