Drive Industries Design Group, a designer of Hawaiian-themed apparel, gifts and products, has launched a new line of custom-designed protective cases for Apple Inc.'s popular iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch in its Zazzle store. Featuring lush Hawaiiana artwork inspired by tropical flowers, surfboards and retro surf designs. Drive Industries has designed over 1,000 unique cases to give iPhones, iPads and iPods the Aloha spirit.

We have long been influenced by the the great surfboard shapers such as Greg Noll, Hobie Alter and Dale Velzy. It is from that great respect and with tongue-in-cheek, we created these iPad and iPhone cases.

Aloha Shirts
Textiles inspired by Aloha Shirts from the 40's thru the present
The Aloha shirt was created by a Waikiki merchant in the the early 1930's, but hit their popularity when they arrived on the mainland with the servicemen after World War II. Catalogued in about a half dozen collectable books, these patterns are anything tropical from tapa prints to florals to scenics to conversationals. And who can forget the memorable Aloha shirts worn by Elvis Presley's in "Blue Hawaii" or Montgomery Cliff's in "From Here to Eternity."

While the Aloha Shirt is deep in Hawaiian tradition, modern interpretations of these designs have been used in surf board shorts. These designs showcase some of those patterns.

Pareau Prints
Inspired by the clothing worn for the hula
The pareau (sometimes spelled pareo) print was originally used to describe a wrapped garment such as a sarong or lava-lava (worn by men) in Polynesian cultures. It has come to mean a simple two-color floral print on rayon or cotton, and it is used by hula dancers as part of their costumes. The pareau print is also used in the mens sportswear industry in the Aloha Shirts that have become synonymous with Aloha (or casual) Fridays.

The popularity of the surf culture was just emerging in the 60's and 70's with beach party movies, Jan & Dean, the Beach Boys and Dick Dale. The graphics we used on these cases were influenced by that outdoor culture.
