Birding in Hawaii will add a whole new dimension to your vacation.
The Nene (pronounced "nay-nay") is the State bird of Hawaii. The Nene is a land bird and a variety of Hawaiian Goose.
The Nene has endured a long struggle against extinction. During the 1940s, this beautiful species was almost wiped out by laws which allowed the birds to be hunted during their winter breeding seasons when the birds were the most vulnerable.
By 1957, the Nene was named as Hawaii's State Bird.

Hawai'i Birds
A 5-minute documentary about Hawai'i's endangered birds and the causes of their decline. This was somewhat a difficult topic and we suffered from a lack of suitable footage of native birds as most endangered birds are not seen regularly as they used to be decades ago. Could have done better for sure, in fact if I had the chance I'd do it over for the sake of sharing the issues of the human impact on island birds.

New Wikipedia about Iiwi
The Iiwi or Scarlet Hawaiian Honeycreeper (Vestiaria coccinea) is a Hawaiian finch in the Hawaiian honeycreeper subfamily, Drepanidinae, and the only member of the genus Vestiaria. One of the most plentiful species of this family, many of which are endangered or extinct, the iiwi is a highly recognizable symbol of Hawaii. The iiwi is the third most common native land bird in the Hawaiian Islands. There are large colonies of iiwi on the islands of Hawaii and Kauai, and smaller colonies on Molokai and Oahu; iiwi were extirpated from L?nai in 1929. Altogether, the remaining populations add up to a total of 350,000 birds.

Great Hawaii birds. Makes me want to go there again. I am not sure what my favorite birds there were but the nene at our campsite inside the crater and the Magnificent Frigate Bird gliding beside us on the lava trail to Kalalau are about tied. wow.

I used to love to go bird watching when I was in Idaho. The Whooping cranes were my favorite to watch. I saw some beautiful birds when I was in Hawaii, but I'm not exactly sure what they were. On my next trip I will definitely take a bird book with me.
