Big Island of Hawaii Homes for sale, is it a dream or legends of mermaids? Has Big Island Real Estate, always been there in the back of your mind? It is the American dream and the dream of people from other countries such as Japan, China, Europe as well.
Many people who live in Hawaii, who came from someplace else, often tell stories of getting off the airplane and having the distinct feeling that they were always meant to be there. The islands take you in with a warm aloha embrace. Some people talk about being on the islands in another life even. There is a distinct mystic and enchantment found on the islands that are no where else.
Hawaii is known as the Big Island. Each island is considered to be a 'county', so the Big Island, or Hawaii, is a county, as is Kauai, Oahu, Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. Hawaii claims the second largest in population estimated at about 158,000 plus residents. The Kona side of the island is rather dry and has an average of 72 degrees in the winter months and around 82 degrees in the summer. The east side, known by locals as the Hilo side, has more rain and tends to be cooler and much greener because of its extra rainfall.
The Big Island offers dramatic scenery along the lush Hilo coastline. Hawaii is an explorers dream with two active volcanoes, Kilauea and Mauna Loa and three dormant volcanos, Kohala, Manuna Kea and Hualalai, for the geologists enthusiasts.
Hawaiian legend tell tales of Pele, the goddess of the volcano Kilauea, giving artists, dreamers and writers a distinct world of enchantment. Many hula and Hawaiian chanting often suggest Pele in their expressive messages.
Legends of mermaids were born here! That's where my "Mermaid Baby" series of paintings was born!
Amazingly, Hilo side also offers snow skiing on Mauna Kea because of its snow capped mountains! They SNOW ski on the Big Island, not just surf. While there are no ski lifts, locals and visitors alike do snow ski at different times of the year.
Mauna Kea is actually the tallest mountain in the world, even taller than Mt. Everest!
Wow!
Measuring from the ocean floor to its highest peak, Mauna Kea is 93 miles (150 km) across and has a land area of 4,028.0 square miles (10,432.5 km)representing 62% of the total land area of the Hawaiian Islands. Mauna Kea has some of the best ground-based astronomical observatories as well. Hawaii is a star gazers dream indeed.
Other attractions to the Big Island on Hilo side include, the University of Hawaii at Hilo, Hawaii Community College, the Merrie Monarch Festival, which is a week-long celebration of ancient and modern hula. It is served by Hilo International Airport.
So there it is, Hawaii, land of enchantment, dreams and legends of mermaids, sailors and sea captains and perhaps yours as well.

IZ - Over the Rainbow / What a Wonderful World
Mahalo nui loa everyone for all your awesome comments and your continued visits. And thanks especially to Bruddah IZ. This song always gives me chicken skin (goosebumps) fo shua. He was a moke with a big heart. A hui hou bruddah! A tribute to Bruddah IZ - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, a favorite son of Hawaii whose music brought joy to millions the world over. While IZ had recorded a version of "Over The Rainbow", this version is unique in that it features a medley of both "Over The Rainbow" and "What a Wonderful World." IZ served as a goodwill ambassador for the native people of Hawaii and will remain in our hearts forever. Aloha and Mahalo! P.S. I apologize for the short audio dropouts at the very beginning. It occurred during uploading. Unfortunately, to re-upload would mean deleting all of your wonderful comments and starting over again. I won't let it happen. Perhaps I'll upload a 2nd version of this. I've received hundreds of inquiries about getting a MP3 of this song. I strongly recommend buying a CD from Mountain Apple Records, Bruddah IZ's label in Honolulu. Support Hawaii's #1 record label. It can be ordered online at www.mountainapplecompany.com

Don't forget your etiquette!
The Hawaiian culture has certain Etiquettes.Etiquette
noun
the customary code of polite behavior in society or among members of a particular profession or group.
While visiting Hawaii.. remember that you are almost visiting another country. Hawaii is different from the mainland in that it honors certain things within the Hawaiian culture.
Mainlanders think of the work Aloha as seen in the dictionary:
Aloha
exclamation & noun
Hawaiian word used when greeting or parting from someone.
BUT... it is A LOT more than that!
Aloha in the Hawaiian language means affection, love, peace, compassion and mercy. Since the middle of the 19th century, it also has come to be used as a greeting to say goodbye and hello.
It is also the state nickname of Hawai%u02BBi, the "Aloha State".
Aloha means to let the other driver go first, notice the people around you and showing good manners. I cannot promise you that ALL the people on Hawaii will show you equal courtesy but for the most part it is indeed the Hawaiian way.
LIVE ALOHA!!

Ever need an extra hand? How about using your toes?
Ti leaf leis are often tied with both hands and feet, using ones toes to hold as leverage, as shown in my painting below.
When making a Ti Leaf Lei one first goes out and gathers ti leaves. Cut out the middle vein so that you have two peices left. Wash them off and put in the freezer til frozen, then thaw. They will be soft and pliable then. They are then twisted and braided. Often they are made to have an open end.
I have posted books below on leis for your further enjoyment. You can make a lei out of most anything and they make a wonderful thoughtful gift.

You need to try poi first at a authentic Hawaiian luau or a chance to go on one of the states Hawaiian food tours. Kalua Pig or chicken just out of the 'imu' is the Hawaiian way. An imu is an underground oven of sorts, done with banana leaves and rocks that are hand picked with great respect. Hawaiian fun food while different and entertaining also has many traditions of honor in Hawaiian history.
The feast will also include Lau Lau which is pork or chicken , a bit of salt pork wrapped up in a taro leaf which is covered then with banana leafs and either cooked in the imu or a pressure cooker or at least cooked for a very long time. Taro or lau lau leaves are the green leaves from the taro root. Taro leaves if not cooked for a very long time, at least 2 hours will give you what is called itchy throat, not exactly a Hawaiian fun food when it is not cooked long enough. I have had it before and while it is uncomfortable it is not the worst ever yet avoid it, why ruin a good lau lau or Hawaiian food tour?
Lomi, lomi salmon and rice are both traditional Hawaiian food served in this meal. Lomi lomi salmon is kind of like a tomato salsa.
OK.. so back to tasting. Take a bite of lomi lomi salmon and savor it. Next take a nice bite full of Lau Lau and rice, then finish it off with a one or two finger helping of poi.
Think yogurt at first. Blend the different tastes of all of the above and try to see how they compliment one another. Poi is what brings this all together... really!

Living in Hawaii is a lot different from living in California where I am from originally. I will be posting more of my insights as time goes on.
Experience what is different from your home from another's. Isn't that why we travel? The best meal I had when I visited Germany was at a little stand outside a shop, not in some hotel. We travel to see what is different from ourselves right? Why look for the same?
~~*~~
NEVER, ever, enter someone's home in Hawaii without removing your shoes first, not even if they have dirt floors. Ya just wouldn't do that out of respect for their home and person. Normally you will see a whole slew of shoes and slippas outside the door of Hawaiian residents. It is pretty darn cute.
Mahalo (thank you in Hawaiian), for removing your shoes is often posted on a lot of Hawaii residents homes just outside their front door. Craftspeople wisely take advantage of this opportunity by making signs out of tiles or wood and other materials. Plaques saying
"Mahalo For Removing Your Shoes"
are for sale all over the Hawaiian Islands.
You can find "Locals" or "Surfahs" brand names for the most hip, yet cheap (under $5.00 normally) at a lot of grocery stores even, all over Hawaii. Ya might want to go ahead and wait till you arrive to purchase what the locals wear, yeah? Make your first stop at the local grocery store or quick stop.. too funny huh?
Whatever ya do, unless you have extreme athletes feet or something, don't wear shoes and socks, that is a dead giveaway that you are from the midwest and your aim it to fit in right?
Aloha! A word that can never be said too much in Hawaii.
~~*~~
When you visit Hawaii, know that you have stepped on to Hawaiian land and be respectful of Hawaii's ways and culture. Be mindful and show honor to the beaches and every single rock.
This is Hawaii.
Aloha

Hawaiian Travel and the Weather
Getting There: Check out the module below for an idea. BUT, I would try Hawaiian Airlines. Go to their site and find the BEST days to travel to get your better rates, Tues & Wed are the better days. The weather? Below is also a weather chart. On the Big Island, Hilo side as well as a lot of Hawaii, it rains, yes, that is why its green! Yet it seems to rain a lot at night and then clears up in mid morning. That's how its been lately. Smile!

I did not know of your deserted treasures.
I was in a clouded box.
I was the mask
in front of my own face.
I absorbed
only
what I was told to.
New days spawn ultimate miracles
spiders spin webs.
Tell the others
fairies and dragons
of their salvation though
I am still looking for mine.
Just a message to hold on to.
Give me a reprieve though
will you?
Set your mark inward for a change?
When you feel tempted to elaborate on falls
make them your own?
In return I'll stop painting your doorway.
I tried to reach you
but you were out.
Nothing new, or is it?
Blood from my mouth
a dragons voice in the hallway
thoughts of recovery
I guess for my sake alone.
Puddles on the sidewalk
no reason to hesitate
you never have before.
All of your belongings?
Free coloring pages fairies and dragons
have been given to you.
I never knew them.
I whisper your name at night
and I confess
more often than not
I miss having something with your scent.
I hear me stupidly crying.
I will scrub off all those blemishes though.
Stop their complaints
how dare they?
I still put bandages on all their fingers
yet they still refuse to travel
much less dance.
Can you imagine?
Funny
I always thought I'd be more outgoing
at least not so damaged.
Not to worry though
I still reach for kisses
from distant planets.
If I don't find you again?
No forwarding address?
Or if you decide you will not call?
I will not be angry
not when all is said and done.
No, I won't.
I will forever think of you
fondly
and imagine you, fairies and dragons
dancing.

Saving money! You don't need all those cold weather jackets, boots... just an umbrella for occasional showers.
Yet.. the Big Island does have snow! Crazy huh?
There are no snow storms in Hawaii except at the top of Mauna Kea. Yup, people do snowboard and snow ski on Mauna Kea (Hawaiian for white mountain) on the Big Island of Hawaii.

10 Tips That Create a Wonderful Hawaiian Home
From HGTV's Website10 Things That Make Buyers Bite... and my KATHY NOTES
1. A Nice Entryway
Impress buyers right off the bat with a beautiful entrance. "I always tell sellers to put a fresh coat of paint on the front door," says real estate agent Theresa Evans of Charleston, SC.
And if you don't have an entrance at all, make one. "A lot of my buyers have mentioned that they don't like to just go through the front door into the living room," says Los Angeles-based realtor Rhonda Kohn.
This problem, more common in condos and apartments, is solved by cleverly placing furniture to create more of an entryway. "A console table or demilune chest of drawers with something over it creates a welcoming vignette," says designer Sue Adams of Andover, Mass.
KATHY NOTE: Yes! We have a great entryway. Double door entry with a big porch that leads into a foyer that looks on to the atrium. There is a covered breezeway that leads from the front driveway to the front door.
2. Hardwood Floors
Realtors agree that most buyers are hunting for hardwood. You can bet that of all types of flooring, hardwood floors will "have the most longevity and will never go out of style," according to designer Linda Applewhite of Sausalito, Calif.
A synthetic wood floor, like Pergo, "is always a good option for those who can't afford hardwood," furthers real estate agent Rhonda Kohn. But know that a laminate floor "won't fool everyone - it has a hollow thud when you walk on it and it doesn't look the same," adds designer Sue Adams.
KATHY NOTE: We did not put in 'wood' floors because it just is not practical in the island so opted for Pergo throughout. Bathroom floors are newly installed ceramic tile.
3. Fab Fixtures
"Fixtures," says designer Linda Applewhite, "are the jewelry of the house." Only the extremely detail-oriented among us will stop to inspect doorknobs, faucets and cabinet knobs, but designers and real estate agents argue that we'll prefer the look of a place that has coordinated fixtures that are a cut above standard developer grade.
"Newer construction is so chintzy with fixtures and fittings," observes Miami-based interior designer Simon Temprell. Replacing knobs and drawer pulls "is the quickest way to make over a bathroom or kitchen," he says. And when it comes to faucets, he adds, "for $60 or $70 dollars you can buy something infinitely better" than what you likely already have.
KATHY NOTE: In both the bathrooms we chose a higher quality fixtures.
4. Beautiful Baths
According to real estate agents, marble counters, whirlpool baths and steam showers up the attractiveness of any bathroom. But if you don't have these luxury items, it may be more practical to address the unattractive aspects of your existing bath.
"Rip out that big sheet mirror and those globe lights that look like you're in a theater dressing room," suggests designer Simon Temprell.
Replace them with an elegant framed mirror (don't be afraid to look outside the bathroom section, he says) and sconce lighting on either side.
This lighting scheme is also more flattering to the face, observes designer Sue Adams, and making buyers feel pretty will pay off!
KATHY NOTE: We added ceramic tile floors, shower/bath stalls as well as both sinks. There is a Jacuzzi in master bath with sink area in the dressing room. A clear glass shower door is in the 2nd bath. There is a 3rd full bath with shower in the garage.
5. Countertop Considerations
You've probably heard that granite is the secret to a contemporary kitchen, but that's not necessarily what buyers are after. "It's really about the slab," says designer Linda Applewhite. Buyers don't want to see grout lines on their counters, she explains. So when it comes to slab countertops, granite is the top pick because it's hard, nonporous and easy to care for. But then again, so is Corian, so are composite stone surfaces such as Silestone and, she notes, with the help of today's sophisticated sealants, so are concrete, limestone, soapstone and marble.
Even butcher-block, which is much less expensive than stone, can be a more appealing alternative to tile or laminate countertops. "When it gets funky, you can sand it and oil it and it looks good again," she says.
Already have granite? Make it cutting edge. "A lot of people are honing their granite now," adds Applewhite. "What that does is knock it down and make it more matte, so it looks warmer and more inviting. Shiny surfaces can look very cold."
KATHY NOTE: While we did not add slab countertops we did opt for the granite and feel because it is in black with the walls being grey it is a hip look. Refer to the pic on this email with the black appliances. Several homes in District 1 have dated countertops in formica even.
6. Steel This Idea
Why do buyers go bananas for stainless-steel appliances? It's the power of suggestion. "A kitchen with stainless appliances looks like a commercial kitchen. It makes people think that they're great cooks," observes designer Sue Adams, "but because the finish shows fingerprints, it's not for everyone."
As far as other alternatives go, the designers agree that in general, black fixtures can look dated, while white is okay for a country kitchen. And some people are making appliances blend in beautifully by ordering front panels to match their cabinetry.
KATHY NOTE: While HGTV says that black appliances are outdated two pages down they posted a pic showing a kitchen with black appliances and it does indeed look fabulous! We did not go with the Stainless because we noticed in the store that yes indeed they do get fingerprints and that was not appealing to
7. Pre-Organized Closets
Just as stainless appliances convince buyers that they are better cooks, closet organizers make buyers believe that they are better homemakers. If your closets are unadorned, don't underestimate the importance of this easy addition.
"They make you feel secure and calm and people need that," notes designer Sue Adams. And while you don't need to use high-end organizers, make sure that the materials are up-to-date. "Twenty years ago, closet organizers meant wire shelves. You can't slide anything over a wire shelf. You can't even put a hanger in some of them," she says. Today's ideal would be "melamine shelves, in bone or white, with some drawers and metal rods to maximize storage," she says.
This organization shouldn't stop in the closet - make sure your kitchen cabinets are orderly, too. "If they open up a door and see a big pantry, but it's not organized properly, it won't be as exciting as something already organized with a place for everything," says real estate agent Theresa Evans.
KATHY NOTE: In the master bedroom we have pre-organized closets as well as in the 'dressing room' which includes drawers and shelve. Pre-organized shelves are NOT done in cheap rubber coated wire but in wood making for a lasting and cleaner design.
8. Light Up
"Floor lamps just don't cut it these days," says real estate agent Rhonda Kohn. If your home doesn't get a lot of natural light, consider installing recessed lighting or new sconces, or both, so the buyer won't struggle to figure out how to brighten up the space.
"Lighting is probably the most overlooked, yet the most important aspect of interior decoration," designer Simon Temprell says, adding, "In newer construction, you don't have sufficient lighting. The reality is that everyone needs three types - task, ambient and decorative lighting - which allow you to change the mood of the room."
When it comes to recessed lighting, know that the smaller the fixture, the more updated it is. "We used to have six-inch apertures, now we have four-inch openings. And using halogen bulbs gives a cleaner, more modern look," says designer Sue Adams.
KATHY NOTE: We did not add a lot of lighting because that is a very personal thing and left that to the home buyer.
9. Built-In Bonus
Interior Designer Linda Applewhite observes that many buyers view built-ins as "free furniture." Well-crafted bookshelves, china cabinets and entertainment units can "make a home stand out as quality," adds designer Sue Adams.
On the other hand, says designer Simon Temprell, "It can be a catch-22 because some people would rather organize their own furniture. Sometimes it's better to have freestanding pieces that look like built-ins, that you can give the buyer the option to purchase."
KATHY NOTE: Built in Bonus in our home is the china cabinet in the dining area as well as the drawers and shelves in the master bedroom, already mentioned.
10. Grass Is Greener
Are the homebuyers in your area families with young children? If so, they'll be drawn to spaces with a flat, open lawn.
Were you thinking of putting in a concrete patio or rock garden? Don't bother if you're putting your home on the market. "A flat yard is a real plus. Spend some money and put in the grass. It's a good seller," says real estate agent Rhonda Kohn.
KATHY NOTE: Grass and mature landscaping is abundant around this architect designed home. The yard is fully fenced with locking gate. Mac nut, mango, avocado, cotton candy, coconut, seqoia pines trees, gingers, orchids,ti leaf plants, ferns, and many other tropical flowers. Rock walls are throughout the yard.
Bonus Tip: Furnish That house!
Think you're ready for the open house? Consider this: "Architecturally interesting homes in immaculate shape can be shown empty," notes designer Applewhite.
But in general, "people look for a homey kind of a feel," adds real estate agent Kohn. And that's homey, not homely. If the bulk of your furniture isn't attractive, don't hesitate to have it staged (propped with attractive rental furniture). "We're even seeing that done in the inexpensive condo market," she says.
KATHY NOTE: We furnished this house with a minimalist approach so that the buyer might be able to envision their own furnishing in the home.

This is not a 'kit home'! The house is a U shape with an Atrium and koi pond in the middle. Upon entering the house one looks onto the atrium as well, which is seen in almost every room.Other attributes:
Double garage with side workshop area and full bath. Out buildings, COUNTY WATER, partially set up for catchment, SOLAR PANEL, fully covered breezeway from driveway to wide four step stairway that meets double door entry.
Central Vacuum: There is an outlet in each room, a little square box on the wall that has a lid that pulls up. Inside there is a hole for a vacuum hose. Under the house there is a thing that looks like a barrel where the dust and dirt from the vacuum goes. We do not have the vacuum nor the hoses.

Kilauea and the Land of Orchids
In honor of the volcano Kilauea, on the Big Island of Hawaii."From the Womb of God New Earth Does Form"
I feel it in the air
I sense it in the birds
and the trees that stand with grace.
Wild orchids flow
in honor of today.
I will carefully choose my treasure
and wear it in my hair.
Sweet scent of erotic pleasure
only flowers can bring.
Voices from volcanoes sing...
Ohh...
I hear it
I sense it.
New earth spits out a sound
it is the birthing of new land.
I stand
STILL
Listening.
Listening.
We will walk upon the land
carefully
reverently
praying for mercy
hoping it is within our grasp.
We will look out on the ocean
from a far
hold our hopes intact
as life forms.
Pele will forever guard this trail
weeping tears of coal.
Blended secrets
legends abound
jealous lover
melted on the skyline.
Sacred tales
only a Hawaiian knows
tied with ti leaves
rocks of grace
forever chanting
vibrations humming
dancing
and blessing their sacred sound.

"Learn a little bit about Hawaii, it has a very interesting history. It's always good to learn about"
Hawaii - on Wikipedia
The State of Hawaii ( or ; Hawaiian: Moku?ina o Hawaii) is a state in the United States, located on an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean southwest of the continental United States, southeast of Japan, and northeast of Australia. The state was admitted to the Union on August 21, 1959, making it the 50th state. Its capital is Honolulu on the island of Oahu. The most recent census puts the state's population at 1,283,388.
This state encompasses nearly the entire volcanic Hawaiian Island chain, which is made up of hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles (2,400 km). At the southeastern end of the archipelago, the eight "main islands" are (from the northwest to southeast) Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, L?nai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and Hawaii. The last is by far the largest, and is often called the "Big Island" or "Big Isle" to avoid confusion with the state as a whole. This archipelago is physiographically and ethnologically part of the Polynesian subregion of Oceania.
In standard American English, Hawaii is generally . In the Hawaiian language, it is generally or h??v?i?i.
Mythical- Magical Journey's to Enchantment - How To Stay Creative
One of the many things you can do in Hawaii... well anywhere of course... It learn to paint.. connect with your creative side!Below is an article I wrote on the subject:
Mythical- Magical Journey's to Enchantment - How To Stay Creative
Mythical and magical journey's to enchantment isn't that the road artists of fairy, mermaids, goddesses, unicorns, dragons and and other enchanted creatures seek out? Abstract, pop art, landscapes, seascapes, how to stay inspired.
Do you struggle with how to motivate yourself towards creativity, because at times it does feel flat? I believe there are things we can do, as artists, to stimulate the process. Sometimes those things might be more simple than you might think.
Some of my ideas might work for you and some may not, but you will not know until you try. Goddess art, unicorns, dragons, grim reaper drawings and and other enchanted creatures might just be around the corner.
Some ideas might spin you into another idea, one I had never even dreamed of like pop art or abstract art, you might be more 'creative' towards your own adventure of artistic endeavors. No matter how you get there, with my ideas or your own, the destination needed is the one that catches the light of an idea then acting on it.
I have always been an artist, seeking mythical and magical journey's to enchantment ever since I was a little girl I knew mermaids and fantasy fairies, unicorns lived in my head. Art is all I think about so being creative is just kind of a a force that I can't help. I am not saying that I don't sometimes go short though. I do, but I can usually pull myself out of it by doing simple things.
