Hawker Hunter - the Cold War fighter

Ranked #3,620 in Culture & Society, #80,024 overall

About the Hawker Hunter

The Hawker Hunter is widely considered one of the most graceful jets ever built. Used in combat by airforces world wide, the Hunter was also used by a number of display teams including the Black Arrows.

The Lens Image shows Miss Demeanour - a privately owned Hawker Hunter which displays at air shows.

About the Hawker Hunter

A beautiful fighter

Going into production in 1950, the Hawker Hunter was one the Britain's most successful and best known aircraft. With a surprising turn of speed (one of the prototypes broke the airspeed record) and exceptional handling, the Hawker Hunter's distinctive silhouette rapidly became well-known.

The original F4 variant had issues with short range and engine reliability, which were solved by creating the F6, the best known Hunter version. By replacing the engine wih a new design the problems were resolved, leading the Hunter to be the RAf's front line fighter until 1963 when the English Electric Lightning replaced it and the Hunter was switched to an air support role.

It was the aircraft of choice for the Blue Diamonds and Black Arrows, the famous RAF display teams.

The Hawker Hunter remained in service with air forces around the world until 1994, and now many Hunters are flown by private pilots on the display circuit.

The Hawker Hunter is not entirely retired even now. The Lebanese airforce still fly them. While at one point they were reduced to three it now appears they have an additional set of airframes which are being made airworthy. Reported numbers vary between six and twelve extra planes, but it would bring the Hunter back to the front line.

The Black Arrows

A colourful Hunter airborne

One of the best knwn huntes on the display circuit is Miss Demeanour. The aircraft's history is as colourful as its paint, with sints served in the RAF and Swiss airforce. In 1997 it passed into private hands. Owner Johnathon Whaley had it restored and now flies it on the display circuit.

Officially it is registered as G-PSST, but goes by the more familiar name of Miss Demeanour.

The history page is of particular interest - scroll halfway down for the grin of a man who owns his own Hawker Hunter.
