Hawking Technology - Wireless N Networking Range Solutions

Ranked #3,556 in Computers & Electronics, #64,559 overall

Creating a wireless network? WiFi hotspot? Need a little extra range? Looking for a WiFi signal booster?

Hawking Technology is your answer to many of your wireless networking woes. In all honesty, creating a working wireless network is not one of the easiest things to accomplish for the average computer user. Even the professionals can encounter trouble, with so many variables such as line of sight, interference with other devices, etc.

So here we like to make it simple, with solutions designed to get you up and running at a low cost, with the speed and efficiency you need, without the headaches of learning every little detail about networking.

“There are so many different things out there... what do I need?”

If you're like most users, you're probably having trouble figuring out exactly what you need to create a working wireless network to solve your connectivity problems within your home or business. In times like these, answering these few simple questions will help guide you to a solution.

1. Are you creating a network or trying to share a connection with another location?

If you are creating a network for the first time, you're going to be wanting to look for a router, and from there any range extending devices that you may need. Please see the HAWNR1, or if you would like a stronger and more up to date unit, check out HW2R1 smart repeater (also functions as a router).

If you're trying to share an existing connection from one location to another location, you are looking for a point-to-point solution, which can be a little more complicated. Please scroll down to the appropriate section.

2. Are you creating a network for your home or your business?

If you are looking for a home network, generally you are going to need to cover a smaller area than business installations. Please see our indoor router and range extender line.

However, if you are creating a network for your business, it really is dependent on how large an area you need to cover. Please see our indoor router and repeater line, although if a very large area, our outdoor line may be a more cost effective option.

3. Do you need protection from the weather or not?

If so, the outdoor line of products are encased in a casing designed to combat moisture, cold, and heat. So no matter what your living situation is like, you'll be safe with the outdoor line.

If not, opt for the indoor line, as they are generally cheaper in price and will still accomplish the networking task at hand. Many of the indoor modules available are also more versatile, and will allow you more options in the networks you can create or boost.

4. Are you covering a large area or a smaller one?

If covering a large area, whether it's indoor or not, you will want to either opt for an outdoor solution, or get an indoor solution with upgraded antennas for broadcasting to a larger area.

Worst case scenario, if you have an extremely large area (over 1000 square feet), then you will want to create a mesh of coverage with the above noted networking solutions.

Smaller areas are easier to cover, as the basis for networking is that the farther away you go, the slower the max speeds you can achieve. If you only need to cover a few dead spots in a home or office, a smaller and usually cheaper unit will benefit you greater.

“Speed and distance are inversely related--the faster the speed, the closer you need to be.”

5. Are you looking for a solution for on the move, or a static, permanent solution?

If you are constantly on the go, traveling for school or business, or want a mobile networking solution for your laptop, opt for one of the USB network adapters. The HAWNU1 (omni-directional) and HWDN2 or HAWNU2 (directional) are ideal depending on whether or not you know where your WiFi source is.

If not, opt for one of the stationary units that are meant to be configured and left alone.

6. Are you more concerned with speed or range?

If you are more concerned with speed, you're going to want to get omni directional devices with higher (300-N) mbit connections, as that denotes a higher networking speed, such as the HAWNU1.

However, there is an inverse relationship between speed and range--the farther away you go, the slower your connection will be. So if range is an issue, you're going to want a lower mbit (150-N) connection, with a directional device, such as the HWDN2.

HAWNR1 (Router)

Hawking Technology Hi-Gain Wireless-150N Router with Range Amplifier (HAWNR1)

Amazon Price: $50.95 (as of 06/01/2012)Buy Now

A router is one of the most important parts of creating any network--no matter where it is or what your network is to be used for. Generally speaking, your internet source comes in through cables into a modem (usually provided by your internet service provider), which then is connected to your router.

The router is the device responsible for taking that connection and broadcasting it wireless, allowing any devices with the proper security key to connect and use the internet or network to interface with other devices on the same network. It can also be used as a wired device, provided there are enough available ports to connect each computer or device to the router.

The HAWNR1 is Hawking's standard 150-N router. It is capable of transmitting B/G/N networks with a 150 mbps connection, but also is equipped with Range Amplification technology to give you the edge in covering your home without any additional units.

It also has 4 ethernet ports available for using as a wired solution rather than a wireless device, and is compatible with both Apple and Windows devices.

This product itself includes...

1 Hi-Gain Wireless-150N Router with Range Amplifier
1 Mac/PC CD (includes User's Manual)
1 Power Adapter
1 RJ-45 Ethernet Cable
1 Quick Installation Guide
2 Hi-Gain Omni-Directional Antennas

More information available on the product page or at Hawking's HAWNR1 datasheet.

HWREN1 (Range Extender)

Hawking HWREN1 Hi-Gain Wireless-300N Range Extender

Amazon Price: $59.99 (as of 05/31/2012)Buy Now

The HWREN1 is Hawkings' basic range extender. Working in a similar fashion to a repeater, it basically grabs the signal from your router wirelessly and rebroadcasts--thus extending your wireless network to cover any of those dead spots in your home or simply strengthening your signal within your home.

This unit is capable of up to 300 Mbps speeds and can extend the range of any B, G, or N network that you may currently have in your location. Now, just so you know, although the unit is capable of up to 300 Mbps, it is limited to the speed of the router--thus if you use this with the HAWNR1 (which is capable of up to 150 Mbps), the router is a bottleneck of speed, and your HWREN1 will also function at 150 Mbps.

This unit is packaged with...

1 Hi-Gain Wireless-300N Range Extender
1 Power Adapter
1 PC Install CD (includes User's Manual)
1 Quick Installation Guide
2 Hi-Gain Omni-Directional Antennas

For more information, check the product page above or Hawking's HWREN1 datasheet.

Explaining networking to newbies can be tricky. A definition/encyclopedia section will help them learn each detail first, so they can put it all together in their minds as you explain the bigger picture.
