Franz Joseph Haydn, a great Austrian composer of the Classical era

Franz Joseph Haydn (1732-1809), normally known just as Joseph Haydn, and often nicknamed Papa Haydn, was an Austrian composer.

He was a prolific composer. His works included 104 symphonies, 84 string quartets, piano sonatas, operas, and choral works (including masses).

Particularly well-known are his oratorios, The Creation and The Seasons and his Farewell and Surprise symphonies.

He established the classical form of the sonata and the symphony, which were then taken up and developed further by Mozart and Beethoven.

Haydn spent much of his working life (1761-90) working as choir master and musical director on the estates of the Esterhazy family in Hungary.

Haydn's Trumpet Concerto in E Flat Minor (1st Movement)

Trumpet played by Rafael Mendez

Rafael Mendez - Haydn Trumpet Concerto

In this second installment of the Rafael Mendez special entitled "The Trumpet," Mendez begins with discussing the origins of the trumpet and then plays an exceptional rendition of the third movement of the Haydn trumpet concerto. For those of you familiar with this piece it will be a breath of fresh air to hear Mendez's version. This was the first piece written for the keyed trumpet, and Haydn wrote this concerto to really showcase this brand new instrument. Unlike other classical trumpet performances of this piece where the trumpet sounds like a part of the orchestra, Mendez electrifies the show by playing with such vigor and virtuosity. I think Mendez is doing Haydn a great favor by playing this piece not as part of an orchestra, but as a trumpet player. Haydn intended this to showcase the trumpet, and Mr. Mendez does just that.

Franz Joseph Haydn (article)

Although he is still often called "Franz Joseph Haydn", the name "Franz" was not used in the composer's lifetime and is avoided by scholars.

Haydn (March 31 1732 - May 31 1809) was one of the most prominent composers of the classical period, and is called by some the "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String Quartet".

A life-long resident of Austria, Haydn spent most of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Hungarian Esterházy family on their remote estate. Isolated from other composers and trends in music until the later part of his long life, he was, as he put it, "forced to become original".

Joseph Haydn was the brother of Michael Haydn, himself a highly regarded composer, and Johann Evangelist Haydn, a tenor.
