The Silent Killer
I have never understood all of the things I have read or seen on the television about High Blood Pressure being the silent killer. Today I understand from firsthand experience. From my understanding there really are no early symptoms. In some cases it is known as Heredity Hypertension. I was told that no matter I had tried to do or what I planned to do that it was going to happen to me that it was just a matter of time! My first thought when I was told this was, How dare you say that to me what because I turned fifty one that automatically meant I was be diagnosed with High blood Pressure? It was no different than when I turned forty and went to the eye-doctor and he told me I would have to wear trifocals after he asked me how old I was!!
I can tell you, I have been involved with natural healing for so many years that when I was diagnosed with HBP, I actually cried when I had to take my meds for the first time. The only thing that went through my mind was, I cannot believe I have to live the rest of my life taking this man-made poison. Two months later with A LOT of hard work, I can honestly say Thank Goodness for these meds! I still have a few down days but I am starting to feel better!
I wanted to write this with the hope that perhaps I will be able to help other people who have just been diagnosed with HBP. Life really does not end when you have this, it is just a wakeup call that you need to improve your health.

This is a MUST have book!!
Betty Crocker Healthy Heart Cookbook (Betty Crocker Books)
Amazon Price: $8.76 (as of 02/15/2012)![]()
List Price: $24.95
The afternoon I got home from the hospital, I went onto Amazon and purchased this book. This was before I was told I had HBP. My plan was to take 30 days and clean up my eating habits and take natural herbal remedies to get my blood pressure numbers down. This book has been a life saver for me. The recipes are great and easy to do. I still alter some the recipes to cut back even further on sodium and fat. My favorite is a Blueberry Breakfast Bread which I will post in a little while. This book has all of the sections divided, breakfast, meats, salads, snacks!! I highly recommend it!
Wow..which way do I go Geroge!!
I am not an expert with this subject AT ALL but what I can do is share something's with you that I have learned these past two months. Anyone that would like to add anything here is welcome to do so. When the doctor was talking to me he said: you need to lose weight, you need to exercise more, you need to give up caffeine, and you need to stop smoking. He was saying these things so fast that I actually felt like that cartoon character that says which way did they go George, which way did they go! I knew I had a lot of changes to make and there was no getting around it, I had to do them! To do all of these things at once was like WOW and I have not done everything yet. I do not believe in Diets but I do believe in changing your eating habit. I know I need to exercise more but you have to work at your own pace and work up to what the doctor wants you to do. It is the same with smoking and the same with giving up caffeine.
I recently had my one month examine and yes, I am losing the weight- yes, I am exercising but not like I should be-and yes, the only caffeine I have I now have is one maybe two cups of coffee in the morning and that is it as far as the caffeine goes. The smoking, I have a lot of work to do but will get there because I know I have too!! I have brought my BP down to a good point and my doctor was impressed and said I did not have to go back for another six months.
I will admit I use to be a HUGE junk food junkie! I love sweets, I love eating potato chips with a slice of cheese. Today, I eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, no sweets unless I make a healthy snack and actually do feel better. Sometimes, even the fruits are a little too sweet to me, laughs I never thought I would say that!
To make any change in your life, you have to put your whole heart into it. You can never look at these changes as punishments because you are not being punished, you just let some things go and you need to fix them. I have never really given any thought to my situation as being Heredity Hypertension. But because I am fully aware of it now, I am able to share that with my siblings. I have learned a very important lesson about myself during this process, I have learned to stop beating myself up when things take a turn in life, but I have also learned that I have to work at my own pace in order for things to get done. Does that make sense?

It is never too late..
There are Natural Remedies you can do to help lower your Blood Pressure if you find you may be borderline. Taking Hawthorn Berries, CoQ10, and Ginkgo are a few things you can take. Watch your diet, excerise, manage your stress level and watch your sodium intake CAREFULLY.
Mostly be kind to yourself, and if you see any of the things mentioned above that you need to improve, do it while you have time to correct the problem. Try not to have a "scare" in order for you to make changes.

- I really appreciate your sharing of this lens. I have so-called heredity hypertension and I have taken meds since I was in my twenties. (I'm in my fifties now) I like you am thankful for the meds, and like you I try to keep my diet healthy with regard to hypertension, low sodium or no sodium, no processed foods, (they are high in sodium usually) no fast food and low fat. I have managed to stay mostly ahead of my condition. This is not a death sentence, it simply is a fact of some people's lives, especially here in America. I hope you are well, and continue to remain that way. See you around the galaxy...

- Pretty scary. I am glad to know this is doing better. I used to eat cheese with potato chips. Had to be cheddar. I have not done that in a long time. My diet is boring now, but was more of an intestinal spasm/stress problem 3 years ago. I stopped smoking after 20 years about 5 years ago. I still drink caffeine sodas, I stopped drinking coffee and I eat grains with milk on it (cooked grains) for breakfast every day, split pea soup and chicken and rice as my faves. I recently started eating tacos and burritos and red meat again. I have to stay away from greasy foods as it actually seemed to aggravate my blood sugar which is hypoglycemic if I don't eat a certain way. Stay healthy!

- I am blessed with low normal blood pressure but a couple of people I love have high blood pressure. One of them controls it carefully with diet, exercise, and medication and the other is slapdash about it, taking his medication only when he remembers to. I'm sending this page to both of them.

- It happened to me too...and I felt so angry to keep hearing the words 'silent killer'...frightening people witless is not helpful..healing comes from order and calm. Do you ever hear about 'cancer: the painful killer'? Why is it o.k. to treat one disease so differently to all the others! I have a lens where I vented my spleen about this, and explained how I have learnt to manage my high blood pressure You might find it interesting. Health and happiness to you, Poppy

- Excellent lens and a very important subject. It is so important to get your blood pressure (and Cholesterol etc.) checked even when you are in your 30s or 40s it can be a symptom of some other problem or a lifestyle issue, but whatever the cause it's good to catch it early.

- Funny how "The Silent Killer" has been said about more than HBP. They (Doctors) also claim Type 2 Diabetes is a "silent killer" because there are millions who die from diabetic related disease who don't even know they have Diabetes.
Thanks for the info. HBP is also one of the things Type 2 diabetics suffer from.
So we have to watch our BP as well as eat to control our blood sugar. Knowing more about HBP is the first step to correcting it. Just like diabetics we all need to stick to a healthier diet. Best of luck in controlling your HBP.
