Hopping into Easter

Easter is a great holiday where we celebrate the rebirth of Jesus just as much of the world is celebrating the rebirth of spring. This is a religious holiday but also one that has a lot of non-religious connections ... like the Easter bunny, coloring eggs, etc. This lens features crafts and activities that are fun to do, require little supervision and are easy on the pocketbook.

Papier Mache Eggs

What You Need:
Paper mache paste (see recipe below)
   Balloon
   Tape
   Newspaper cut into one-inch strips
   Toweling
   Pie tin
   Paint brushes
   Colored tissue paper (optional)
   Shellac
   Smock

What to Do:
   1. Make the paper mache paste. When it has cooled, pour it into a pie tin.
   2. Blow up a balloon and tape it to the table.
   3. Dip strips of newspaper in paste and place carefully on the balloon being careful not to pop the balloon. Cover the balloon completely and let dry overnight.
   4. Decorate the paper mache with paint or colored tissue in pastel Easter colors.
   5. Finish with a shellac for a shiny, glazed effect.

Papier Mache Recipe

What You Need:
   1 cup water
   1/4 cup flour
   5 cups boiling water
   Pot

What to Do:
   1. Mix the flour in the water until it is thin and runny.
   2. Stir this mixture into the five cups of boiling water. Allow to gently boil for 2-3 minutes.
   3. Allow to cool until you can dip newspaper into the mixture without burning yourself.
