Winter Forecaster Fun

Every year on Feb. 2 the residents of Punxsutawney, PA make the trip to Gobbler's Knob to find out if Punxsutawney Phil, the official Groundhog's Day groundhog for 120 years, will see his shadow. Do you know what happens if he sees his shadow? That's right! Six more weeks of winter. If he doesn't then there's going to be an early spring. What do you think? Will he see his shadow or not?

Here you'll find some easy and fun crafts that are pocketbook friendly. We also have a word search puzzle to do and directions on how to make shadows on the wall with a link to some great shadow play ideas. Connect to the official Groundhog Day web site. Have fun!

Sleeping Groundhog

What You Need:
   2 egg carton cups
   Brown construction paper
   Paint
   Markers
   Scissors
   Glue
   Transparent Tape

What to Do:
   1. Paint the outside of the egg carton cups. The bottom one will be the ground and the top one above ground. Allow to dry completely.
   2. Draw a small groundhog on a piece of brown paper and cut out. Use markers to draw a face and other features on the groundhog.
   3. Glue the groundhog onto the inside of the bottom egg carton cup. Allow to dry.
   4. Tape one side of the bottom cup to the top cup to create a 'hinge'. You can open the other side and see the groundhog sleeping inside.

Pop-up Groundhog

What You Need:
   Brown construction paper
   Large tongue depressor
   Paper cup
   Markers
   Scissors
   Glue

How to Make It
   1. Draw a small groundhog on a piece of brown paper and cut out. Use markers to draw a face and other features on the groundhog.
   2. Glue the groundhog onto the top part of the tongue depressor. Allow to dry.
   3. Cut a slit as wide as the tongue depressor in the bottom of the paper cup (which can be decorated or left as is).
   4. Slide the bottom of the tongue depressor through the slit from the top. The kids can use this end of the tongue depressor to make the groundhog pop-up out of the cup.

I have always been a crafter. When I was a teen I taught myself how to sew and since then how to do many other different crafts including paper crafts, crochet, knitting, painting and cross stitch.

I have always enjoyed working with children. I have been a nanny and am currently working with middle schoolers in an after school program. I love being able to share my love for crafts with them. This lens allows me to reach many more kids than I normally would be able to.
