I have always been a crafter. When I was a teen I taught myself how to sew and since then how to do many other different crafts including paper crafts... (more...)
Think Spring
The snow is melting away, the temperatures are warming and the rainy season has started. What a great time to try out these fun, easy and inexpensive spring crafts.
Terrarium
Parental guidance and help may be needed
What You Need:Plastic 2-liter soda bottle with cap
Sharp scissors or craft knife
Dirt or potting soil
Seeds
Water
Permanent black marker
What to Do:
1. Remove the label from the soda bottle then wash and rinse out the bottle and cap.
2. Cut the bottle close to the bottom with the scissors or craft knife, the "line" at the bottom of where the label was is a good place. You can cut it higher if you'd like.
3. Lightly place dirt or potting soil in the base.
4. Plant a few seeds in the dirt. Lightly water.
5. Put the cap on the bottle. Cover the base with the top of the bottle. You'll have to fiddle with it a bit to get it to fit inside the top.
6. Place in a sunny spot and watch for the seeds to grow.
7. When the plants are ready, repot them or plant them in your garden.
Fun Foam Themometer
What You Need:Fun Foam
Flat thermometer
Markers
2 Suction cups

What to Do:
1. Cut the fun foam into any shape you'd like. For example, a frog or fish with the body big enough for the thermometer.
2. Decorate with the markers and other fun foam shapes.
3. Place the flat thermometer down the center of the body.
4. Glue suction cups on the front, with the suction cup facing out. Let dry completely.
5. Hang in a window.
Pinwheels
Parental guidance and help may be needed
What You Need:Colored or clear tabbed plastic file folder, letter size (you can make about eight pinwheels from one folder)
Ruler
Thin line marker
Scissors
Needle
Straight pin
Unsharpened pencil with an eraser
Dime
What to Do:
1. Lie the folder out flat. Mark then cut a 4 1/2" square out of the plastic file folder.
2. Place a dime in the center of the square. Trace around it.
3. Cut diagonally from one corner towards the opposite corner. Stop cutting when you reach the circle's edge in the center. Repeat for the other three corners.
4. Take the needle and push it through the very center of the pinwheel, coming from the back of the pinwheel. A grown-up may need to help with this step. Do not push the needle all the way through.
5. Take the right corner of the first section and bed to the center of the pinwheel. Push the needle through it and hold.
6. Take the corner of the next section and bend the right corner to the center. Push the needle through it and hold. Repeat for the other two sections.
7. Remove the needle, carefully holding the sections together. Push the straight pin through the front of the pinwheel completely through the back. A grown-up may need to help with this step.
8. Push the straight pin into the eraser of the pencil, making sure not to push it all the way through. Let the pinwheel loosen up between the corners and the back. Blow on the pinwheel to watch it spin.
