Wintery Fun

The winter can be lots of fun with snow falling, sledding, skiing, snowball fights, and building forts and snowmen. It also means lots of cold and sometimes icky weather that keeps you trapped inside.

Here are some fun, easy and inexpensive crafts to keep yourself busy with when you can't go outside. These crafts are great for teachers to use too!

Waterless Snowglobe

What You Need:
1 plastic bubble container that vending machine toys come in
   A can of spray snow
1/2 to 1 inch Christmas ornament
Hot glue gun (to be used by an adult only)
   Black spray paint
   Paper cup
   Toothpick
   Ribbon, optional

What to Do:
   1. First separate the top and bottom of the plastic container. Spray paint the top (the smallest piece) with black paint. Let dry.
   2. Spray snow in paper cup - dip tooth pick into snow mixture and place drops of snow inside the bottom portion of the clear bubble. Note: You can not spray snow directly into bubble - it will not work!
   3. Hot glue ornament on the top of the lid.
   4. Hot glue the lid inverted to the plastic bubble.
   5. You may wish to glue ribbon around the bottom of the globe to add that extra touch!

Easy Snowglobe

What You Need:
Baby food jars (medium or large jars)
   Florist clay
   Small figurine
   White glitter or fake snow
Hot glue gun or aquarium sealing glue (to be used by an adult)
   Garland plastic greenery

What to Do:
   1. Make sure jar is washed and clean. Note: Any jar will do if you want a larger snow globe.
   2. Attach figurine to inside of jar lid using florist clay. If you are using a small object, it's a good idea to build up the clay so the object will appear taller. Attach any optional items with the clay (greenery, berries, etc.). Use your imagination, but make sure it is waterproof and won't dissolve.
   3. Fill jar with water to within 1/2 inch (1 cm) of top. Use cold water, warm water tends to cloud. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon (25 ml) of glitter, or snow into water. Insert figurine in water, screw on lid.
   4. Let stand overnight - lid side up. Use glue/sealer to ensure waterproofness and attach decorative ribbon over lid. You may also paint the lid rather than use ribbon. Use your imagination, the possibilities are endless!

Claypot Snowman

What You Need:
2 inch terra cotta clay pot
1 1/2 inch wooden ball head
   Orange pipe cleaner
   Small buttons
   Twigs
   Paint
   Clear acrylic sealer spray
Glue, preferably a hot gun (to be used by adults only)

What to Do:
   1. Wipe down your terra cotta pot with a damp cloth and let dry completely.
   2. Paint the clay pot and the wooden ball head white. Put them aside to dry.
   3. Once the paint is dry, glue the wooden ball onto the bottom of the clay pot.
   4. Paint a face on the wooden ball.
   5. Once all your paint is dry, spray it with the clear acrylic sealer.
   6. Cut off about 1/2 inch from the orange pipe cleaner and glue it on for the snow person's nose. Glue the two buttons onto the clay pot. For the arms, find two small twigs and glue them in place. (See finished project above.)

Make a Snowflake

What You Need:
   Wide mouthed jar
   3 white pipe cleaners
   String
   Scissors
   Pencil
Boiling water (an adult needs to do this part)
   Spoon
20 Mule Team Borax Laundry Booster

What to Do:
   1. Make a giant snowflake frame from 3 white pipe cleaners and string. Twist the 3 pipe cleaners together in the center to make a 6-sided, spiky figure. Make sure this figure fits inside the wide-mouthed jar.
   2. Tie the string around the pipe cleaners to look like a snowflake shape. Trim the excess string.
   3. Tie a few inches of string to one of the pipe cleaners. Tie the other end of the string to a pencil, so that the snowflake will hang from the pencil and dangle inside the jar. Take the snowflake out of the jar.
   4. Pour boiling water into the jar (have an adult do this part). Add the 20 Mule Team Borax Laundry Booster to the hot water in the jar. Keep adding the Borax until you have a supersaturated solution (you will see undissolved Borax at the bottom of the jar).
You'll have to add about 3 tablespoonfuls of the 20 Mule Team Borax Laundry Booster to each cup of hot water in the jar.
   5. Hang the snowflake in the jar and wait at least overnight.
In the morning, your snowflake will be covered with beautiful crystals. As the supersaturated solution cools, the borax comes out of solution (less of the borax can dissolve in cool water) and forms crystals on the pipe cleaners and string.

Tip:
You can do the same type of project using supersaturated sugar-water and a string, making edible rock candy (the crystals take longer to form).

About craftywench_nh

I have always been a crafter. When I was a teen I taught myself how to sew and since then how to do many other different crafts including paper crafts, crochet, knitting, painting and cross stitch.

I have always enjoyed working with children. I have been a nanny and am currently working with middle schoolers in an after school program. I love being able to share my love for crafts with them. This lens allows me to reach many more kids than I normally would be able to.
