About Douwe Egberts
Douwe Egberts was founded in 1753, in the Dutch village of Joure, by husband and wife Egbert Douwes and Akke Thysses. From a small shop called the De Witte Os or the White Ox in English, they began selling coffee, tea and tobacco.Although Egbert Douwes only sold to the local villagers in the beginning, his son, Douwe Egberts, who joined the business in 1780, started a process of expansion by supplying shop owners outside of the village.
Douwes built up a regional reputation and gradually, the Douwe Egberts brand became known across the Netherlands. In the years that followed, the company grew into a respected market leader within Holland for its core coffee and tea products.
Since 1978, Douwe Egberts has been associated with the Sara Lee Corporation, which allowed the company to penetrate the worldwide market. Today, Douwe Egberts is the second largest coffee roaster in the world.
