From Black and White to HDTV Televisions

It is fascinating how technology changes over time. Most of us can remember those old black and white television sets and how images looked on them. While younger generations may never seen one in action, some of us may remember. When Tv sets hit the market, they were colorless apart from black and white and many shades of gray. Later, the world of television evolved and colors were introduced into the image further transforming the concept of television. All these older sets had only one audio channel and as technology moved on an additional channel was added. Stereo was born. Stereo made audio more alive, spreading sounds across a an apparent panorama by changing volume levels for each sound individually between two speakers. In recent years, television sets have evolved again this time to they are called HDTV televisions.

What Makes HDTVs Different from Conventional Sets?

These powerful Tv sets have more than three times the resolution of regular sets. The images that are projected by HDTV televisions are outstanding and can be easily distinguished from images that are projected in a conventional set. Images in conventional sets normally look blurry especially in bigger screens. This problem is caused by the low pixel quantity that they display. The larger the screen the bigger the pixels and the more blurry the image becomes.

With HDTV televisions pixel quantity is not a problem simply because they have more than triple the amount of pixels than non high definition sets even if they are set at the lowest resolution that is still considered high definition. The magic of these sets is not only limited to image quality. These sets can be connected to computers, high definition tuners and many other gadgets further expanding their usefulness as a center piece in home theaters. Not to mention, that high definition television formats also support 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound.

There are many types of display technologies that have been developed over time and that are being used in HD sets. Some of them have had a bigger impact on consumers like Plasma and LCD while others like LCoS and DLP remain mostly unknown to the majority of people. LCD is currently the leading technology in the world of high definition. These sets are lighter, slimmer and are very energy efficient. When it comes to smaller sets, LCDs are cheaper than Plasmas. High definition television sets with Plasma screens are one of the best performing screen technologies that exists today. They are heavier than LCD sets and use more energy but deliver warm colors and deep blacks. The colors on Plasma screens have more resemblance to the warm colors and blacks that are present in the CRT screens that are found on conventional Tvs and early HDTVs.

The other two display technologies have had less impact on the market but are still part of the world of high definition television. DLP technology is currently being used to manufacture rear projectors that are cheaper by inch than other HDTVs. When it comes to huge screens DLP is the winning technology. While the image quality is lower than that of other technologies it is still the best value for the money.

LCoS is a heavy competitor in terms of image quality. However due to the high manufacturing costs the impact on the market has being limited. Not to mention that leading brands have been focusing more in the two leading display technologies, especially with LCD screens.

Which one is the best? There is no real answer, it depends on you needs.

The Future of High Definiton Television

High definition television will continue to evolve and newer displays using different technologies will continue to be developed. As of today, the highest resolution that an HDTV television is able to display is 1080p but expect higher resolutions very soon. There have been prototypes revealed in television and electronics conventions that display higher resolutions than those that are displayed in sets that are on the market today.

As time keeps passing by those high tech boxes that we call televisions will continue to evolve and amaze us for many years to come.
